Bernard Alvin Palmer was the originator and author of over 165 books for Christian youth, as well as several books for adults. His biggest and most popular series is The Danny Orlis series. His stories were also used on the Back to the Bible Broadcast.
Danny Orlis lives at Angle Inlet, MN, on the Lake of the Woods with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Orlis. Danny and his friend Jim Smith, an orphan who is living nearby with his Grandpa and Grandma Bates, are helping Mr. Orlis guide a party of hunters from Minneapolis. One of the hunters, Eric Densmor, is acting strangely, won’t follow instructions, and gets lost. While searching for him, Danny and Jim find evidence of illegal “market hunting” where fellows hunt wild game out of season and sell it to expensive restaurants. With the help of an Indian boy, Joe Ladeena whose father is accused of helping the market hunters, they determine to find out who has been threatening the game population but find themselves trapped by the criminals.
It is the middle of winter, and a huge blizzard seems to be brewing. Will they find Eric? How does he fit into the situation? And what will the criminals do with the boys? There is not much to dislike about the Danny Orlis stories. A few people might think that the religious element is a bit overdone, but it is always nice for kids to read an exciting mystery adventure in which people conduct their lives according to a strong faith in God, ask the Lord’s guidance in prayer, and share the gospel message with others. The only objection that some of us would have is the “confess our sins and take Jesus as our Saviour” by praying plan of salvation presented. Otherwise, I highly recommend this book.
