Book 1 in Jennifer Snyder's Captivating Young Adult Paranormal Werewolf Romance Series.
Jennifer Snyder lives in North Carolina where she spends most of her time writing New Adult and Young Adult Fiction, reading, and struggling to stay on top of housework. She is a tea lover with an obsession for Post-it notes and smooth writing pens. Jennifer lives with her husband and two children, who endure listening to songs that spur inspiration on repeat and tolerate her love for all paranormal, teenage-targeted TV shows.
Jennifer Snyder’s Marked is a great start to the Marked Duology. The moment Tessa Morganton and Jace Fowler met they are attracted to each other. Then Tessa’s life changes drastically after an animal attack. This paranormal shapeshifter novel takes place in North Carolina and is suitable for young adults.
I liked the characters. Tessa is sweet. Her mom comes off as if she is hiding something. Jace is mysterious and driven. I really enjoyed the plot of Marked. While it had the feel of a typical shapeshifter novel, it had some unexpected and interesting twists. There are some fascinating conflicts. Both Tessa’s and Jace’s exes, Sam and Shelby, are a little on the crazy side, adding interest to the story. At a little over 100-pages Marked is a fast read. The story held my interest the entire time and was well-written. I cannot wait to read the next book Changed.

I love werewolf books and i loved reading this too. Tessa is normal teenager with friends, family and school but then she meets jace and her life becomes more interesting and also dangerous only she doesn't know it.Yet. Breaking with Sam,Becoming close to Jace,Facing Jace's ex,And coping his secrets are just a start and when she faces the most dangerous stuff which she wants to avoid as her dreams shows makes her life upturned. I loved this book and looking forward to see how tessa will cope this change and how will this effect Jace and her relationship. Sri.
heart flip-flop. Language is delivered with ease and focuses more on content than on particulars of structure. There is definitely a lyrical placement of words; I was tempted to speak them as I was reading because they would just roll right off. The book also has good pace, it glides you through all the events and minutae to arrive at a complete picture, and then it takes the picture further through yet another cycle of important minutae.
Oh, Jace. This character is so well created it made ME crush on him a little. He's all kinds of perfect, and yet so imperfect. "There was jus something about him that I couldn't resist." He was setting out to show her (Tessa) how she should be treated. He's even considerate to ask if she has any allergies to any of the ingredients he's using to cook for her.
I really love the maturity of this book. I was completely enthralled moment to moment. It is definitely a page turner. I especially love how Tessa describes her relationship to Sam as a bad habit, and how they're always the hardest to break. This book really took me by surprise. It more than exceeded my expectations. It is really a worthy read.
OH all the 'lines' Jace throws at her (yes, we're back to Jace... it's like another Edward Cullen). Smitten yet slightly feeling the cliche moment. "You look beautiful." "You could do better." "I'll show you how you should be treated." "Nothing compared to the alluring effect you have on me." He definitely had a sultry and hypnotic tone about him. His boldness takes you by surprise and renders you speechless, it's what's mesmerizing about him. Jace is definitely an arrogant character. But he is terribly romantic. He kept leaving her these flowers on her windshield. "Days passed without seeing Jace again, but every night I worked, I found another rose attached to my windshield. On the nights I didn't work, I'd find one the next afternoon, once school had let out, beneath my windshield wiper blad. None of them ever had a note besides the first, but I didn't need ont to know who'd left them." Oh and then to top it off he comes by with two yellow roses, one for all the tears he had made her shed, and the other for asking for her forgiveness. HA! I have to mention this tid-bit, because I know someone exactly like this. He doesn't have a cell-phone. That's cool! I love his reasoning for why he doesn't have one. "Because... once a person gets one, it's like it rules their whole life or something. Think about it. People feel naked if they leave the thing at home. Oh, and the whole text messaging thing - very impersonal. Besides, if I want to talk to you I'll find you, because there's never a time when I just want to talk to you. I want to see you, too. I like seeing your expressions and gazing into your beautiful eyes. It's all more intimate." This is a great adventure, full of suspence and surprises, all the way to the end. The ending is probably the best of it all. "You've always been marked for change," is what Jace says to Tessa towards the end. I think I froze a little when I read that. But he is a little selfish, besides being arrogant and egotistical. He says to her, "Have you ever felt so lost inside, like you don't know yourself and you're not sure if you ever will? That's how I felt every day... but that feeling went away the day I first saw you. It was like something inside of me sparked to life and I knew if I were to ever let you go that little spark would die out again." Some how even though Tessa is the main character, Jace definitely took over the story for me. I want to be smitten by him, but also hate him, and then be smitten by him again.
Really, a very well written book. I'm glad I got the chance to read this book. I've also posted an excerpt to give people an idea what they are in for with this book.
Wow, I loved the story. It was beautifully written with so much emotion in place. The feeling was realistic; I could feel what Tessa was feeling, from happiness down to heartache. While waiting for Tessa's exposure to the supernatural world, which only happened towards the end of the story, I enjoyed getting to know the hero and the heroine, and the support characters.
Moving forward, now that Tessa was finally turned, I couldn't wait to read about her first transformation experience and also the secret about her parents. Last but not least, if both the crazy exes would still be in the picture.
P/S: I also had a crazy thought about Tessa's best friend hooking up with Jace's friend as well, and in the end, both of them would run in the wood together during the full moon 😘. But, I know it wasn't possible because she didn't even have the mark.
I enjoyed this easy breezy read! It brought back memories from high school *sighs* oh how nice it was to be in love young, the drama, the fights and the cool besties, and the parties! It was intriguing and brought many smiles! can’t wait to read the next book!
I found this werewolf story interesting, as it followed the traditional take on the werewolf myth. The idea that they turn into wolves during the night of a full moon.I haven’t read a story in a long time that actually followed the myth. It was a draw that made me love and enjoy the book.
This story centers around a girl name Tessa, and how she meets a guy named Jace at the diner she works at. Even though she has a boyfriend already (though she’s planning to break up with him), she agrees to go out on a date with him and that’s when everything starts to change. She falls in love with Jace. Things start getting weird when she beings to have nightmares after an encounter with what she thought was a wolf in the woods. As she starts to get to know Jace, more people he knows start to drop by unannounced causing trouble for Tessa and her releationship with Jace. She always thought she was a normal, everyday girl until she met Jace and her life gets turned upside down.
This story takes place in Breckwater, a town in the USA. It’s a small town with just a Walmart and a bowling alley. It's the kind of town were there's not much to do, so people have parties to break up the monotony. A majority of the story takes place either at the diner where Tessa works, or at Jace's or Tessa's house.
Tessa is your average, everyday teenager. She has a job, and parents her care for her enough to give her a curfew to follow, because if not then she would actually get grounded. I was glad that she broke up with her boyfriend Sam after seeing how he treated her. He didn’t seem to trust her at all and Jace treats her a lot better then Sam did. After that Tessa spent almost everyday with Jace and even when she was grounded they found a way to see each other. I found their interactions between each other to be cute, since you can see how much they care for each other. Near the ending though, after what Jace did to her, I probably would have taken more time before forgiving him. She was too forgiving. I understand that she loved him, but he just turned her life upside down without asking or telling her anything. In my perspective, she should have been scared and angry at him, but then I’m also glad they somehow worked things out at the end. She trusts him enough to know he wouldn’t leave her.
Jace seems like a sweet guy when you meet him. He’s nice to Tessa, caring and doing anything for her. He even does sweet things like leave yellow roses (her favorite flower) for her when they couldn’t spend time together. He does have his scary side, like when he started to beat Sam, not stopping at all. This caused Tessa to become afraid of him for a while, but she does end up forgiving him. What I don't like about him was the fact that he turned Tessa into a werewolf without talking to her first or warning her. If it would me, I would have never forgiven him for doing something that life changing to me.
Tessa's and Jace's friends make up the cast of secondary characters. Rachel is Tessa’s best friend, taking Tessa to all the best parties. She’s there for Tessa when she needs her, and she also works at the diner where Tessa works. As I mentioned earlier, Sam is Tessa's ex-boyfriend, and I’m glad he’s an ex after the way he treated Tessa. He didn't trust her, and everytime she went near a guy he thought she was flirting with him. He was just overly jealous and possessive character . Lastly, you have Jace’s friends from Ohio. Jace describes them as Jenna being a friend, Gravin is an arrogant ass and Shelby is his ex-girlfriend. They aren’t in the story long, but enough for Shelby to start things up between Jace and Tessa.
Overall If you like the popular tale of werewolves, you will love this book. I found it to be a great read.
Great read, i really enjoyed this story about tessa and jace. Will be purchasing the rest of this series. Want to find out what happens next for these two. I could not put this down when i first starting reading, caught me from the beginning. Jennifer is a new author for me and she delivered a wonderful story.
I really enjoyed reading this book. Tessa and her crew are just trying to make it through high school, when the mysterious Jace alters her focal point a bit. This is a fairly short read, and If you are a fan of YA paranormal books, I recommend you pick up this book.
Tessa wants more than her small town life, Jace is the new guy in town. Where will a few wayward glances take them it’s anyone’s guess.
Tess’ jealous boyfriend can’t handle a friend smile from a stranger, the thought that she could be interested in someone else but him is not something he is willing to accept
Who will win her heart? Who will she choose in the end? What does her birthmark mean?
All of this and more is answered in a very well written and intriguing book. I look forward to reading book 2
I received free copy of this book from the author and the opinions about this novel are expressly my own and are completely unbiased in nature.
I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for my unbiased review of it. The following statements are entirely my own opinion. Jennifer Snyder has done an impressive job with Marked the first book in the Marked Duology. I was drawn in from the beginning and lured in even further into the story as it went along. This is a story told in the first person by a high school girl named Tessa. She’s 17, in high school about to turn 18, in a less than ideal relationship with a guy who doesn’t really have any big dreams and wants to settle down which just isn’t what she’s wanting to do right now. She’s an only child and works at a local diner in a small town. Right off the bat at the beginning of the story Jace steps into her life by walking into the diner where she works. Immediately there is a spark, a connection between them and she feels it. She can’t help looking at him again and again. There is something about Jace but she wont learn what it is until much later on in the story. I can’t say that it’s magic but I really liked the element of when the author said “ Our fingertips made the briefest of contact then, and flickers of warmth sparked under my skin from it.” It sounds romantic, magical and just makes your heart beat a little faster in anticipation of more. It draws you in more and makes you want to know if they are connected in some way. As the story goes along you get to experience with Tessa the angsts of dealing with high school life, family, friends and her relationship with Sam and Jace. You feel for her when she is faced with the dilemma of continuing with Sam or ending it by saying enough is enough from all the drama and mess that he has put her through as of late. You get to experience the strange behavior of her mom when she meets Jace for the first time and you realize that her mom knows more than she is letting on. Jennifer Snyder does a really good job at creating the teenage angst, drama and issues with this story you feel like you are experiencing it all over again. Watching them dealing with the pettiness of a rejected boyfriend, watching him move on with the next easy thing to make you jealous, Tessa dealing with issues stemming from Jace and Sam, and then dealing with the changes that she herself begins to go through. So when you reach the final page in this book it’s a major jolt that feels you wanting to know more…what happens next! I have to say that I devoured this book in no time flat and thoroughly enjoyed it to the fullest and if you want to check out a new author…I say check out Jennifer Snyder and you wont be disappointed. I give this book two thumbs up and five stars.
I was caught from the very beginning. I really enjoy supernatural romance books and this one was great. I am very happy that this is a series. Definitely about to buy the next one. I would highly recommend this book.
Before I say anything about Marked, I would like to admit that I don't like werewolves as much as I like other paranormal creatures like vampires, witches, revenants or zombies. That being said, reading Marked totally changed my view of werewolves. They are nothing short of awesomeness and Marked showed me exactly how much!
I adore Tessa Morganton, she is the embodiment of impulsiveness, she likes the thrill of adrenaline running through her veins. But she doesn't know it yet. Life is pretty normal in the small town of Breckwater for Tessa. Well, apart from small occasional bursts of jealousy from her boyfriend, Sam and her weird dreams about werewolf bites. But then things literally take a turn for change as soon as Jace Fowler steps into the diner Tessa works at.
Jace is an excitingly mysterious character. He has the charming act perfected to a tee, but he is honest and somewhat troubled at the same time. Pretty complex, if you ask me. He is very full of himself at times and more confident than Tessa have ever been. The chemistry between Tessa and Jace is there from the first moment they meet which surprises Jace. Then he sees Tessa's birthmark. And he lives in the creepy house owned by his uncle.
The subplots in the book, such as the boyfriend Sam and the role of Tessa's parents and Jace's cousins were perfectly balanced. Sam is a difficult person to deal with and for Tessa he became a bad habit she found difficult to break out of. Tessa's mom, on the other hand, doesn't really like Jace. I couldn't figure out exactly why was that. Tessa's best friend, Rachel, is an easygoing character in the book who never really took things too seriously.
Marked is a fast-paced book and so there's always something happening in it. I like that in books and I managed to finish it in one sitting! I would highly recommend Marked to readers of young adult paranormal books. Changed will be releasing in June 2012 and I can't want for it to be released!
I read Marked and Changed back to back so it is going to be a little bit hard for me to distinguish between the two books but I will do my best. It helps that there is a very clear turning point between the two. Let's start with that. I LOVED that Marked did not end with a cliff-hanger. It ended in the perfect spot in my opinion- something big had happened a few chapters back and Tessa was just starting to deal with the reprecussions. It left you read to read the next book but not in the crazy way that cliff-hangers do. I thought it was well done. I liked Tessa and Jace. I liked them as individuals and I liked the idea of them together- but I wasn't head over heels in love with either of them. They each did things to annoy me. I thought there attraction was a little too quick and I don't approve of cheating. Even though I didn't like Tessa's ex at all, I still felt bad for him. (even though his actions later on made me really dislike him) And what Jace did was really selfish. I just wish that he had talked to Tessa about it first. Don't get me wrong I really like the two of them together but what Jace did just really rubbed me the wrong way and I thought that Tessa was too quick to forgive. But I get why she did- she must have felt incredibly alone! I can't even imagine! Marked is a quick, easy read. I finished it in just a few hours. The writing is inviting and very good. it didn't make me fall head over heels in love but it was entertaining non-the less. For people looking for a quick werewolf story, Marked and Changed might be the perfect duology for you.
So, marked.... I read it in a few hours, its the 4th book I started in one day, but the only one I made to the end...having said that, I'm not sure i'll read the next book...it's not that Marked was bad....it was just very passive....very low key, non exciting....only a couple steps away from boring....nothing even happens till well past the 50% mark. And ...okay, this is sorta spoiler ish, so I'll use the tags. ...plus some of the things she says...well they make her sound like she's got more in common with the bitchy exes, and mean girls from other ya titles rather then a heroine in her own rite....and the hero's a bit of a pansy...I don't know how to describe him other then that....well, okay, he's sorta like those guys you see from afar, who are all kinds of hot...but then you talk to them and you realize there's nothing beyond all that hotness... So yeah, he's not a favorite...give me an hour and I'll forget all about him...
Oh and lastly, there's no world building. ...so, it's not that I hated Marked, but rather I just don't care. I don't really care how the heroine resolves her issues with her mother, or how she deals with what happened at the end of the book, and I don't particularly care if she gets her HEA with the hero...I'm just not interested.
Tessa Morganton is working with her best friend, Rachel, at a diner and sees a newcomer to her town. Unfortunately, her boyfriend, Sam, notices and starts acting like a jerk. Apparently, Jace, the newcomer, hears the outburst and asks if Sam is bothering her. This isn’t the last time she sees Jace.
Rachel convinces Tessa to get him to buy them tequila, and instead of getting Tessa to pay him with money, he wants to go out with her, knowing that she has a boyfriend. She agrees and finds herself liking him. Tessa is torn between Sam and Jace. Sam has been a jerk for a while, but she feels bad that she’s started to secretly date Jace. However, dating Jace isn’t problem free. He has family and friends that show up unexpectedly. They definitely don’t seem to like Tessa, but she has no idea why.
As it gets closer to her birthday, Jace becomes more intense. Is there more to him than meets the eye?
I liked Tessa okay, but I didn’t like that she dated Jace behind Sam’s back. I liked Jace a whole lot better and thought Sam was a jerk, but it didn’t still excuse it. Jace does show Tessa that she shouldn’t be treated this way. It’s pretty obvious what Jace is, and Tessa has several dreams that allude to what he really is.
I’m looking forward to see what happens next with Jace and Tessa.
This is the first book in the Marked Duology Series and Jennifer Snyder did not disappoint. The writing was great and kept me hooked throughout the entire book which was a quick and easy read. Tessa ... She is living the normal high school life where she is just starting to think about her future and is questioning her current boyfriend, life, and everything that is to come. Long behold, Jace walks into town and completely turns Tessa's life upside down. I was sort of annoyed with Tessa at first when she was clearly really into Jace, but was with Sam. Then she kissed Jace... yes kissed and it was totally swoon worthy. She should have dumped Sam from the start. Sam... Can you say completely obsessed. Sam was on a jealous rampage over everything with Tessa which made them fight all the time. I honestly think Tessa was just comfortable being with Sam, but that she didn't want to really be with him anymore. However, Sam's obsessiveness drove Tessa right to Jace... Jace...He comes sweeping into town all sexy and mysterious as hell. Of course he also lives in the creepy house no one will go near. He swoops in and whips Tessa right off her feet. They share this mysterious pull that you will find out more about at the end of this book. I look forward to reading the next book in this series and more work from Jennifer Snyder.
The first book starts with Tessa who works in a local diner, is in high school and is a normal girl, with a normal family-or so she thought. One day, while working in her diner, and her boyfriend being quite rude, a stranger walks in, and he is GORGEOUS! He’s sweet, and beautiful, and her boyfriend totally loses it just by her waiting on him. I will tell you right off, I was NOT a fan of her BF, but I WAS a fan of Jace. And I do really like her best friend, Rachel. So, that how she sees him. Then, Rachel and Tessa see him again at a store, and he wiggles a date out of her-this was actually funny. She feels terrible that she is attracted to Jace while dating someone else, but she can’t seem to help it.
Now, I like these characters. They are fun, and interesting, and Tessa doesn’t really figure out what Jace is til the almost end of the first book, which of course he is a werewolf. And wouldn’t you know that Tessa meets his EX who is a total piece of work, but beautiful, so Tessa doubts herself. I will tell you this doubt is believable because I don’t know a single teenager that isn’t unsure of herself. And as some strange things happen, Tessa becomes completely wrapped up in some crazy things.
The cover caught my eye so of course I had to read the book. Jace I loved right off, "some guys just don't know how to handle having a beautiful girlfriend." He smiled, his eyes never wavering from." Sam I counted down the pages until Tessa broke up with his a** he was a pig, rude and just nasty, "then what's your problem, are you on the rag or something?" I mean Jace is easy on the eyes ladies so we had something to appreciate while reading this story, "no, not really," I said, unable to remove my eyes from his bare, and incredibly solid looking, chest with it's well defined muscles." Tessa I'm glad she has a jealous side and I'm right with her on Jace's ex, Shelby, "well, I didn't like the way our night ended either. Seeing your ex-girlfriend's hands all over you as I'm pulling away was not the last image I wanted of you in my head." I can't wait to read book two!
So I don’t want to be overly critical, I always feel terrible when I actually hate a book and have to put it into words.
But, everything was wrong. I could tell from the beginning that there was going to be no real story building. The characters felt like they were just slapped onto the page. I had a little hope for the dialogue in the beginning but then it just turned so cliche. I’m surprised I finished the book.
It didn’t make me feel anything, kind of like a commercial. “When will this end?” The first half of the book was just a bunch of high school drama or things that didn’t really matter at all to the story. The end was stupid.
So over this, I just wanted to read a new werewolf book. Oh well.
Marked was a good start to a new YA werewolf series. It was wonderfully paced and consistent the whole way till the end! I had no desire to sit the book down at any point.
The main character is Tessa a seventeen year old with a jerk of a boyfriend. She soon wises up and replaces him with Jace. She doesn't know it but Jace is a werewolf. We follow along as Tessa and Jace's relationship continues to grow.
You will find a sweet romance, action and mystery between the pages of this book. You will not find any hot and heavy scenes in this book. I recommend this to everyone who likes werewolf books.
Tessa is a high school senior, about to turn 18 and graduate, and in a less than satisfying relationship with a guy from school. When Jace walks in to the diner where Tessa and her best friend, Rachel, work, the attraction is immediate and mutual. However, dumping the abusive Sam for the mysterious Jace may not be the best move Tessa could have made. Regardless, her life is about to change forever.
I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway, and I enjoyed reading it. I was a little disappointed, though, that just when things started to get interesting, the book ended. Otherwise, it was a decent read with a compelling story.
Marked is a brilliant start to the series, which had held my attention straight from the start until the very last page.
I knew as soon as Jace walked into the story that I had found my new book boyfriend, he was good looking and was very mysterious. As the story continues its very apparent that Jace is hiding something pretty big from Tessa. I understand Jace's reasons and his behaviour but I felt it was really unfair on Tessa not having a choice in her destiny, however after a rocky period I was glad to see them united.
I thoroughly loved reading Marked, and looking forward to reading more from this series!
I loved this book!!! The book really had me going. I stayed up a whole SCHOOL NIGHT just to finish it. Though my parents didn't like that I was crabby in the morning, the book was worth it. My favorite character is Jace. I mean he's a werewolf, hot and also he's super awesome and kind and he cares a lot. When I saw that the second book had come out I almost screamed. I loved the first one and was angry that she left the 1st book the way that she did, but I'm happy-like super, atomicly happy- to see a second book and can't wait to read it!
Waaaaay better than The Mayfair Moon which I read before this. Sam was a controlling dickwad, BFF Rachael was the perfect antithesis for good girl Tess, and Jace....well I have few words for you Jace. Not cool man, so not cool everybody deserves the right to chose their path in life and while your reasons for what you did stem from LOVE damn give Tess some credit. Yeah Jace is hot and he did stand up for Tess when dickhead was well..... being a dick, Jace couldn't find a little time to explain things to Tess huh?
I really don't understand why this book is so underrated, maybe more people need to read it? Regardless, I really liked the story. I got into it immediately. I appreciate that the main characters didn't immediately start the I love you's despite the instant connection. I don't think I found anything about it that i didn't like. I am, however, sad that it ended so ubruptly. I look forward to reading book 2!
I was pleasantly surprised by these books and really enjoyed them. I devoured them in just a few short days, and I was definitely sad to say goodbye to that world. (It's a duology, so sadly no more Tessa and Jace for me.)
It's definitely YA and a little "schooly," but Tessa was a great main character. It took a while for the paranormal stuff to kick in (about 75% into the first book), but it really took off after that point. Definitely a fun read for me.
i loved it bought the book on sat held off on reading it till monday couldnt put it down i had to finish it then to top that off i had to know what happens next so monday nite after everyone went to bed i bought book 2 i loved that one too had to finish it hoping this series continues i recomend this series and auther to every one
All I can say abou this book is that Jace is an @sshole I really liked the Tessa and her reactions are true and that of a strong woman. She gets that Jace has been unfair, sneaky and underhanded but she accepts that she wants him and moves past it. I just cant get over how selfish Jace is...... he took her choices away
Would have been four stars but I could not stand that she just got over what was done to her at the end of the book. Umm, no! Someone takes away my choice about how the rest of my life will turn out when its not absolutely necessary to do so that way and I don't think I would be so easy to forgive and forget.
