I love books about specific kinds of creatures, written by professionals who have studied them. This is one of the books I would recommend to animal behaviorists like myself as well as to anyone who loves animals or even finds one of these creatures in their back yard. --Robert William Hult
Five Stars out of five, easily. Yes, I own a copy of this book, and I am keeping it! I am very familiar with the author Leonard Lee Rue III, as I have read five of his books already and have another of his books in my queue. He became the most published wildlife photographer in the country with more than 1800 magazine covers to his credit. He has taken millions of photographs and hundreds of hours of broadcast quality video footage. He has 31 published books and contributed more than 1500 articles for wildlife and hunting magazines. His more than 4,500 lectures for schools, camps and community groups. This guy knows his stuff as he spent a lot of time in the woods. You know that author that you read and you think, I would love to meet this writer? For me , this is that guy. I feel that this is his best book that I have read yet. This book was written back in 1962, when I was only 3 years old, but little did I know that in two years I would be moving out of the City of Philadelphia, and into the deer country of Central Pennsylvania. In 1985 I would be moving further into the heart of deer country- Perry County, and now I have deer on my land every night. How I enjoy observing them, a hobby that will be made much easier now that I have this simple, detailed and highly readable book as a companion to show me all of the sides of the lives of these White-tailed deer. I highly recommend this book to both the hunters and the naturalists.
I loved this book!! I really enjoyed reading it and I liked how in depth it went in each section of the book. I also enjoyed how the author made the decision to go in depth about the behavior of the animal in each season. I think it was a good decision and made for a much more interesting book. This book had a good amount of stories from the authors own experiences sprinkled throughout that really helped you understand the different points explained in the book. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves the whitetail deer!
I got this little antique book for less than a dollar and it was really good! I felt like reading a nonfiction zoology book about a specific animal and this one really did the trick. I learned a lot and the information was displayed in a really nice concise way with photos taken by the author. I didn’t know there was so much to know about white-tailed deer, a species I’ve seen in my neighborhood my whole life.
A wonderful little deep dive into a very abundant species that we often take for granted. Very akin to Bears by Ben East. I highly recommend giving this book a read if you can get your hands on a copy!
