Lane O'Reily, a Baltimore Homicide Detective, takes on the case of a lifetime when he is handed a murder investigation involving a string of young women. Desperate to solve the case before another victim turns up, he must rely heavily on his only witness, a survivor to the crimes. She begins harassing and stalking him and with his marriage, career, and life on the line, he must decide if the obsessive witness is leading him down a path to the murderer, or down a trail littered with lies, betrayal and ultimately, a dead end.
This story pulls you in, shows you how frustrated a detective can get when there is a murder, and then another. No clues, they have an ID in her purse. The boss says to get them solved. You are working late again, home life is almost nil. Your young son, is growing too fast, and the time to spend with him is disappearing with another case, that demands, no sleep. A wife is understanding, that is pushed when she gets a phone call, too many things are said, now it puts a strain on their marriage and one more thing he feels guilty about. Powerful, down to earth look at the life of the detective in the job and at home,
Did not enjoy this as much as the other two books in the series, although it had a lot of good qualities. I liked that the hero, Lane, was introspective and self critical. He loved his wife and was highly motivated to make his marriage work and not the kind to consider playing around. His wife, Kelly, was also in love and committed to work through the difficulties of being married to a cop. I also liked the premise of a cop being stalked/harassed/threatened by a witness, and especially since the cop being a man and the stalker being a woman.
But I just had a hard time getting past all the mistakes that Lane kept making. He knew he shouldn't do it, but then,he'd go ahead and do it, for example, going to Delia's apartment over and over. I liked that he was not a superman, but he frankly came off as incompetent and that interfered with my enjoyment, unfortunately

As usual the author keeps you turning the pages as the plot thickens. Having the lead character taking sometimes questionable moves keep ps you intrigued.
