Conway Jackson wanted his six adult kids to squash their "beefs" before he died, but he was unable to bring them together. So, in his will he stipulates that the only way each of them can receive their $100,000 inheritance, they must go on a scavenger hunt to find the money. They have 48 hours to find the money or all $600,000 gets donated to charity. But, there is one catch...the siblings with the biggest "differences" must team up to find the money. Will these six malcontents find their inheritance before they kill each other?
I pre-ordered Differences back at the beginning of the year and couldn't wait to read it! When I came, I had to stop everything and read it!
It's a tough situation when a parent dies. The children each think that they should be entitled to certain things, but then they listen to the reading of the will to find out what the verdict really is. The children in this book have a big surprise when their father's will is read. They each get a certain portion of money, but there is a string attached. They have to go on a scavenger hunt to find the money, and time is ticking!
I thoroughly enjoyed the situations brought up in the hunt for the money. Secrets were revealed, and Beulah's was something I never expected at all. I liked how the children were forced to work together. Their father gave them more in the end than any money could have bought them. Did they find the clues in time? I will never tell because you NEED to read this book!
Of course, this just wouldn't be a Brian W. Smith book without humor added in. Here is an example of what I mean: "She looked more disinterested than a gay man getting a lap dance from a female stripper." p.8 Brian W. Smith always writes about deep issues, but he has a way of incorporating humor into the story to keep you smiling!
Brian W. Smith never fails to bring readers something new with each book. You can always bet that he is going to keep you entertained, but teach you something at the same time. Just when you think you have a favorite Brian W. Smith book, he comes out with a new one that tops it! This is a must-read for book clubs. If I was in a book club, this would definitely be one that I would recommend for a good discussion. No matter what type of book you like to read, I recommend that you purchase this book and read it. If you haven't read anything by Brian W. Smith (is that even possible?), then I guarantee after you read this book you will want to read more of his work!
Conway Jackson used money to bring his adult children closer after his death. The siblings spent some many years hiding secrets and hating on one another. After the death of Conway, he setup a plan that his children had to work with one another to find their part of the insurance he left. This was a way to bring them closer and to squash the issues.
Conway Jackson has six children and all with problems. When I first started reading I thought they had issues but the reader quickly learns these are most certainly not issues they are problems. You see with an issue you can generally come up with some sort of resolution and it’s small not really life threatening. The Jackson clan had “life threatening problems” which demanded a mediator and time for reflection. The steps you take today can and will impact your children’s future financially if you plan and Conway Jackson did just that he worked hard all of his life and tried to instill the same in his kids. But a parent cannot plan for a future when the children are living in the now. Upon his departure he left only $600,000 and a puzzle to his six adult off springs. Now it’s up to them to work out some things, solve the puzzle and claim their inheritance. But we all know things in life aren’t that easy and certainly not in a BW Smith book. With old hurts and unresolved pain is it even possible in either? Every character in this book could’ve easily been my mother, sister or brother. Their issues were relatable and their problems could be my own. I want to tell you who my favorite character is, but I didn’t have one they all were. From the siblings to the mediator Mr. Brooks each one supported the other. I will share one of my favorite redemptive moments which was shared between LeMar and Thomas sometimes many words are not needed maybe a handshake or a head nod. LeMar and Thomas understood that. “Differences” was definitely a page turner; one that will be with me for a long time. I had to be still after reading because I wanted to make sure I had resolved all my problems and issues with others that I know of because the funny thing about a future is you need to clear the past in order to make a PATH to it.
I thought it was a good plan that the father devised for the dysfunctional relationship these siblings had with each other. Storyline was interesting to see siblings come together & bond while secrets were revealed. Characters and plot believable. Good read.
After the patriarch of the family dies he leaves clues for his adult children to follow so they can find the insurance money that is incurred from his death. They are given a very aggressive deadline to find the money or it will go to charity. The 6 children are also instructed to search in pairs. The problem is each child is paired with the sibling they don't get along with. As with every other book I have read by this author I absolutely loved it. This book is humorous with a lot of issues between the pairs. The reader gets a good glimpse into each person's life. I really liked each character. There's lots of family drama and revealed secrets in this fast paced read.
I really enjoyed reading Differences. I had never heard of the book or author when book was suggested in a book club I am in as a monthly challenge to read a male author. I was pleasantly surprised to read about the siblings in the story thrown together after their father's death and being made to work together in order to receive their inheritance. A few laughs, some tears and some deep conversations make for a very good read.
I read books by this author on the strength of author Monique Mensah's previous work with him. This story has taken me almost a year to read due to the very slow and uninteresting beginning. The patriarch of a family dies leaving a large sum of money to his family. To receive their inheritance, they have to do a scavenger hunt. They are paired up with the family member that they have the most antagonistic relationship with. Family secrets are revealed, some past hurts resurface and some forms of redemption are found. There are a few not so subtle Christian preaching moments, some unresolved storylines and learned lessons. It's a story of family.
In death, Conway sent his six children on a scavenger hunt in order to claim their inheritance, pairing them up in such a way they would hopefully work through their issues. What a great idea; lack of communication is usually the start of many grievances. But who knew this family was buried in so many secrets? I suspect that one reason Conway concocted this plan was that he was not around to raise his children, having become a workaholic after his wife died. Yet, the grown kids managed to work it out - money is a great motivator. Good, interesting read. I was surprised by the errors though, so only 4 stars.
When the patriarch of the family dies, how do you make sure that the family stays together? Who will be the glue? To make sure that his offspring settles their differences? Before that could happen, secrets must be revealed and some feelings would have to be hurt. He leaves instructions in his will that a scavenger hunt must be completed in order to receive their inheritances. In the end you find that the characters inherited more than money, they inherited unbreakable bonds.
it's sad when a parent dies but unfortunately that's when the vultures come out, but when it 's family that just makes it worse. I thought the idea of a scavenger hunt was a great idea because of how it drew all the kids together and they had to work together. The secrets that were reviewed was shocking, this was good read!
I just finished reading Differences. Wow this book was so good and engaging. I absolutely loved the storyline. It certainly touched on real life issues. Man this was such a great novel. This guy, Brian W. Smith is a phenomenal author. Keep writing. Love all your works I have read, you have not disappointed me yet.
Brian you amaze me! The way you put a story together! This book really tells a few stories. When you think you have it figured out there is a twist here and a turn. I highly recommend!
At the reading of Conway Jackson's will, his 6 children learn that they've been cleverly paired up in a scavenger hunt to find their inheritance. The time on the clock is 48 hours or the money gets donated! With each sibling having BIG PLANS for their 100k inheritance, can they face their differences in time?
Full of deep rooted grudges, shocking family secrets and revelations...This was an easy read that will leave you reflecting on what's most important. Forgiveness, love & FAMILY!
I loved each and every one of these characters. I cried when Tanya realized she had her mother all along. Secrets can tear a family apart. I was glad these characters came Beck together as a WHOLE family again.
This is the first read by Brian W. Smith. I am still in suspended animation, trying to imaging how the siblings are going to continue to heal from the revelations and feelings that come with money and family. The book was well written and I had no problem finding myself staying focused on each of the siblings and their revelations. Love is a powerful thing that comes in the most darkest of situations.
The most important thing that parents can teach their children is how to get along without them. - Frank A. Clark
After the death of their father Conway Jackson, his kids find out their father left each of them $100,000 in his will, but getting the money will not be as easy as they think it will be. They are assigned to teams and sent out on a scavenger hunt to find clues, but the biggest catch is... they have 48 hours to find the clues or the inheritance will be donated to charity.
This book deals with sibling rivalry at its best - each sibling is teamed up with a sibling they have issues with. While on the search for the clues, the siblings are forced to deal with topics such as family secrets, betrayal, rape, gambling, and disloyalty. Will The Jackson family be able to work out their "Differences" before it's too late?
Brian W. Smith delivers another hit with Differences - Mr. Smith writing makes me feel as though I am part of the story he is telling. I wanted to laugh out loud and give high-fives to the characters - then there were other times I wanted to console the characters.
As a book lover, that's what we want from our favorite authors - something we can relate to.
I enjoyed th his read especially the clever way these siblings were forced to face their secrets. Sometimes all it takes is a conversation and some understanding. Though at times predictable the easy in which each revelation was revealed was genuine. I can appreciate how each character acknowledge their faults and began the road to change them. I am a sucker for a happy ending and quite enjoyed the turn off events at the end.
There were a few typos & misuse of words which I'm sure was an editing error.
I am so loving books by Brian W. Smith! And this book was no different. His family had some issues! Interesting how everything is revealed. You will love this book. Great ending!!
I really enjoyed this thought provoking book about families and differences. As a society we tend to only showcase the good things a leave the bad things in life dormant. This author allowed us to explore the good and bad of this family. Great read
