The Gate

Rate this book
Devlin Bear was working on a top secret government project when he was killed in an explosion in the facility where he worked before Carly chose his Sim as her sexual partner and fell in love with a man completely beyond her reach.

But if he really died in that explosion, how is it that her new companion Cyborg seems to think he's the real Devlin Bear? Is it the AI and programming? Or is he the real deal?

Carly wants to believe he is Devlin Bear, but it's hard to believe that's possible--hard for her to believe. Some people aren't having nearly as much trouble believing and they want the secret trapped in Devlin's mind.

Short story. 62 pages.

I was so excited to get this book that I've been checking the publisher website everyday to see when it will be out, bought it the first day it was and read it as soon as I downloaded it.

Carly has simulated encounters with her favorite sim partner Daniel. She's a little obsessed and wants to find who he was patterned after. He was actually patterned after her friend Brenda's brother. When she has his sim personality downloaded into a cyborg, she gets a whole lot more than she thought.

Enjoyable. From the acknowledgement by the author, I guess family tragedy has kind of colored her writing. This book shows a little of that. Not too much of the humor of some of her previous books. I wish there was more romance, but it's a novella/short story so I can't expect a lot of room to expand on that. I'm just glad that one of my favorite authors has a new book/story out!!! Keep them coming Kaitlyn!

I was happy to see a new story by KO'C. This one was just okay. I felt that the romance was not very well developed. The sci fi was the stronger element. The idea was good and had a lot of potential but I think a longer story would have done the sci fi element more justice. The events of the story seemed rushed. Characterization and relationship elements were slighted.

Gosh... what a disappointment. The premise was really interesting, could have been very nice like her cyborg series, but instead it was turned into a "oh look it's christmas, it must be a christmas miracle!" BS. For about 80% of the book I thought Carly was dumb and TSTL, and completely unnecessary for the plot except as the catalyst to turn Devlin into a cyborg. Then all of a sudden Carly gets rescued by Devlin, and he confesses he's in love with her??? I'm sorry, did I miss about a 100 pages???

This one actually had potential. The main character was a little shallow and irritating, but in a naive way that didn’t actually bother me. The story was interesting enough, the plot actually had some solid moments. And then, when it finally started to hit it’s stride, deus ex machina, and the whole book is wrapped up in the space of a few pages.

Carly thinks she is going crazy. She has gotten too attracted and curious about her new SIM, Daniel. She has even decided to chance the government’s attention by asking about him. After talking with her friend, she finds there may even be a chance a contributor is her friend’s dead brother.

Devlin finds himself in a cyborg body with no memory of how he got there. He only can recall that what he knows is important. Releasing that knowledge might open him to the people that want access, the people who might have gotten him to where he is right now. Carly and her friend might be able to help, and he may even be beginning to have more feelings than just gratitude towards her.

Devlin has to recall what he cannot remember to aide mankind, and Carly who believed that there was more to her SIM than normal. Helping him will lead Carly to find that she is not crazy after all. Which might mean that her feelings growing for him are real, but will he feel the same? Meanwhile they both work on not pulling the attention of the government … no matter how careful they are there is always the chance they will get caught though.

This story was a good uncomplicated and entertaining read. The sketch of the world and characters are woven well enough so the reader can understand it without it being over done. It seems to be a snap shot of a bigger story, but it is enough of a tale to stand by itself with the promise that more could happen. The only thing that gives me pause is that the ending came too quickly, I wanted to read more about what went on and happened to everyone and hope there will be other stories that will fill in the blanks.

Very short and it felt incomplete. The premise was interesting, but it didn't quite meet expectations.
