Among his books are a series of spy fiction novels about a spy named Carl Hamilton, and a trilogy of historical fiction novels about a Knight Templar, Arn Magnusson. He is the owner of one of the largest publishing companies in Sweden, Piratförlaget, together with Liza Marklund and his common-law wife, publisher Ann-Marie Skarp.
Guillou's fame in Sweden was established during his time as an investigative journalist. In 1973, he and co-reporter Peter Bratt exposed a secret intelligence organization in Sweden, Informationsbyrån (IB). He is still active within journalism as a column writer for the Swedish evening tabloid Aftonbladet.
In October 2009, it was revealed that Guillou had been recruited by the KGB in 1967. The exposure of his activities came after the tabloid Expressen requested the release of documents from the Swedish Security Service (Säpo) and published information from the Säpo files along with information gained through interviews with former KGB Colonel Oleg Gordievsky about Guillou's case. The records showed that Guillou's involvement with the KGB continued for five years, until 1972.

Basically, if James Bond were Swedish. He's, like, sensitive and caring, and his politics are left-leaning, but in an intelligent, informed way, and when he kills bad guys in the line of duty he needs therapy afterwards to take care of the PTSD... that kind of thing. Believe it or not, it's done straight. I know it sounds satirical, but it isn't!
The series is immensely popular in Sweden, and the first few aren't bad at all - I see that they appear to be available in English translation. There are also a couple of movies, where Secret Agent Carl Hamilton is played by the ever-popular Stellan Skarsgård, who recently co-starred in Mamma Mia as possible father #3. (The one with the boat). They're quite good too!

I knew something would turn up if I waited long enough. We've just watched the first few episodes of Agent Hamilton, which according to ever-helpful Wikipedia is "loosely based on the book series". Well, I guess that would explain why I couldn't remember a single thing about the story. But the left-leaning politics and the PTSD are exactly as I recalled them.
Not has taken an instant dislike to Hamilton's girlfriend Sonja and is hoping something bad will happen to her. In the books, I would have guessed it was already a done deal. Getting involved with Coq Rouge was really not good for your life expectancy.

Επιτέλους το τελείωσα! Ομολογώ ότι με κούρασε, ειδικά στην αρχή. Στο πρώτο μισό βαρέθηκα την ζωή μου - οριακά ήμουν στο να το αφήσω στη μέση...
Στο δεύτερο μισό αρχίζει λίγο και παίρνει η πλοκή τα πάνω της και γίνεται πιο ενδιαφέρον το βιβλίο. Πάντως, σε καμία περίπτωση δεν έχασα τον ύπνο μου, για να το τελειώσω.
Θα μπορούσα να το φανταστώ να γίνεται και ταινία. Και είδα ότι έχει και ολόκληρη σειρά με τον συγκεκριμένο πρωταγωνιστή - ίσως να διάβαζα και τα υπόλοιπα.

Läste boken senast typ 1987. Den var bättre än jag mindes den, om än att den är lite för lång. Första halvan är en riktigt tight berättad historia, men sedan blir det transportsträckor fram till avslutningen. Den välberättade första delen är betydligt mer av en polishistoria än den "superhjälte som låtsas vara agent"-story som jag mindes. Ska bli intressant att läsa resten av serien och se hur den håller så här 35 år efter första boken kom ut.

Lättläst! Oväntat bra och spännande för att "bara" vara en actionrökare. Guillou är en mästare på att väva in världspolitik på ett intressant och lärorikt sätt!

Coq Rouge is more than an interesting, funny, or good novel. The symbolism used throughout makes it unique in its genre--which I will call Intelligence mystery. One symbolic thread is the "outlier." In the novel, someone is always deviating from their group to get something done that could not be achieved otherwise. That leads to the second thread: "reversals." Characters and people consistently reverse their convictions or directions to get something accomplished: Hamilton, for instance, is a registered Communist now working for Swedish Secret Intelligence who must break orders and visit Israel to solve a murder supposedly committed by Palestinians, which was allowed to happen because the Swedish officer victim insisted on keeping the code of secrecy about what he was working on. Only by breaking the code of secrecy himself can Hamilton find the real murderers and prevent more planned murders, which the Israeli Officer could, but won't, tell him about because of her own code of secrecy, even though the officer has deviated from her group.
Thus, Coq Rouge goes way beyond "James Bond," "funny," or "witty." It shows us, among other things, how all groups are pretty much alike, in both their corruption, their principles, and their media.

1985. A Swedish Counter-intelligence officer is found murdered in Stockholm. Palestinian activits are suspected, and a witch-hunt is launched against them.
Fortunately for them, one officer in the counter-intelligence department is not a real cop: he is a spy, a leftist spy.
Carl Hamilton is tall, strong, blond and has blue eyes. Moreover, he is a nobility, a Count, and he is indecently rich (Not his fault, a friend of him invested his inherited little fortune in the IT industry in the late 1970s, and he became a multi-millionaire seven years later).
He is a former frogman in the Swedish Navy and has trained five years as a US Navy Seal in San Diego. Even though Sweden is not part of NATO, there is a secret agreement between the little Scandinavian country and the USA to train a new species of Swedish spy: the OP5.
But even though Carl Hamilton is tall, handsome, rich and noble, he is a leftist and will prove that the real terrorists are not Palestinians.

3,5 egentligen som betyg. Jag gillade den, men är inte så intresserad av beskrivningar av vapen och del annat med de olika fraktionerna. Även om jag inser att speciellt det sista spelar stor roll för handlingen. Intressant tidsdokument även om det är fiktion.

Jag gjorde en test, är Coq Rouge lika bra nu som när jag läste den som tolvåring och blev ett Guillou- fan? JA, den håller tveklöst måttet! Alla tummarna upp för Guillou och Hamilton!

Wiele lat temu TVP albo Polsat, teraz już nie pamiętam, wyemitowała w ośmiu odcinkach serial sensacyjny produkcji szwedzkiej o takim ichnim Jamesie Bondzie, czyli Carlu Hamiltonie. Serial miał polski tytuł Wróg wroga i był puszczany bardzo późno jak na ówczesne warunki, bo około północy. Nagrałem go sobie na video, gdyż żal mi było rezygnować ze słodkich snów na rzecz jakiegoś nieznanego serialu. Jakież było jednak moje zdumienie, gdy potem za jednym zamachem obejrzałem całość! To było coś absolutnie nowego, innego i coś, czego się absolutnie nie spodziewałem. Był super. Potem film pożyczałem znajomym, którzy też byli na tyle ukontentowani, iż polecali go innym.
Niestety, popularność doprowadziła do zużycia tych taśm. Próbowałem zakupić serial na DVD albo w jakiejkolwiek innej postaci, ale nigdzie już go nie spotkałem. Postanowiłem więc sprawdzić, czy nie ma książek o przygodach dzielnego i inteligentnego Szweda. I były! Okazało się, że Wróg wroga to trzecia część jego przygód, które zostały wydane w Polsce już dawno temu i jakoś tak przeminęły bez echa.
Coq Rouge to pierwsza powieść cyklu autorstwa Jana Guillou. Akcja rozpoczyna się od zabójstwa wysokiego rangą funkcjonariusza szwedzkiej służby bezpieczeństwa, a konkretnie szefa wydziału antyterrorystycznego, dokonanego przez nieznanych sprawców. Śledztwo prowadzone przez połączone siły policji i bezpieki nie daje rezultatów, między innymi z winy nieudolności zwierzchników (skąd my to znamy). Wówczas Carl Hamilton, tajna broń szwedzkiego kontrwywiadu, próbuje wraz z kilkoma kolegami rozwikłać tajemnicę wbrew poleceniom swego przełożonego; niesympatycznego, głupiego karierowicza. Przydają mu się w tym doświadczenia i umiejętności wyniesione ze specjalnego szkolenia w tajnym ośrodku w USA. Jak się sprawa zakończy nie będę zdradzał.
Moim zdaniem książka jest świetna. Cały czas trzyma w napięciu, a autor wykazuje się znajomością realiów ze świata służb specjalnych, wojska i policji. Obnaża wady formacji przeznaczonych do zwalczania terroryzmu, wśród których z reguły najważniejszymi są ludzie, ich słabostki, ambicje i przede wszystkim głupota. Z drugiej strony pokazuje ich możliwości i ograniczenia terrorystów. Czemu książka nie stała się w Polsce popularna? Bo jest szwedzka. Pokazuje sposób myślenia i mentalność Szwedów tak odmienne od naszych, że nie każdemu chce się przestawić. Do tego dochodzą trudne do przeczytania nazwy, co początkowo spowalnia czytelnika. Dla mnie ta odmienność, ta tak różna od holywoodzkiego, łatwo strawnego uniwersalizmu specyficzność, jest jedną z wielkich zalet powieści Guillou. Daje czytelnikowi nie tylko możliwość wczucia się w tak odmienny od naszego świat, ale i spojrzenia na Polskę i nasz świat oczami Skandynawów. Niestety nie jest to obraz świetlany, ale tak to już jest.
Pomimo tego, iż jest to powieść typowo sensacyjna, więc gatunek rozrywkowy, a nie edukacyjny, to niesie wiele informacji i tematów do przemyśleń. Jan Guillou naprawdę ma talent do tworzenia realistycznych charakterów i pięknie pokazuje różnorodność postaw ludzkich, odmiennych motywów i systemów wartości, nawet w ramach pozornie jednolitej grupy. Potrafi barwnie i wyraziście słowem wymalować wszystko to, co każdy z nas spotyka obracając się wśród ludzi. Nie są to czarno-białe charaktery rodem z Ludluma, jakby zapożyczone z westernów. Tutaj mamy tak odmienne postaci, jak tylko w życiu można spotkać. Ludzi, którzy mają dylematy i złe chwile, mają swe tajemnice, pragnienia i słabostki. Nawet główny bohater, wielki Carl Hamilton, człowiek który posiadł umiejętności jakich James Bond mógłby pozazdrościć, może być pokonany przez przeziębienie. To takie realne ale i tak rzadko spotykane w powieściach.
Książka pokazuje nam świat jakim jest; zakłamany, brudny i zły, ale i zarazem pełen ludzi kochających prawdę, prawość i uczciwość. Widać tam jak poświęca się prawdę dla kariery, dla poprawności politycznej ukrywa się sprawców zbrodni i wrabia się w nie niewinnych ludzi, jak w imię wyższych celów łamie się prawo i morduje. Niektóre wnioski wypływające z książki naprawdę dużo by dały naszym politykom, zwłaszcza tym stojącym obecnie u steru. Najważniejszy z nich to ten, że wśród państw i wśród służb nie ma przyjaciół, są tylko wspólne interesy. Szkoda, że my, Polacy, wciąż nie potrafimy tego zapamiętać i ciągle chcemy być mesjaszem narodów, sumieniem świata i narodem wybranym.
Kończąc pragnę Was zapewnić, że jeśli lubicie powieści sensacyjne, szpiegowskie i trzymającą w napięciu, wartką akcję, jeśli przedkładacie dozę realizmu nad łatwe powieści zza Wielkiej Wody, jeśli chcecie innego spojrzenia na sprawy wywiadu, kontrwywiadu i walki z terroryzmem, to warto po tę książkę sięgnąć i pomęczyć się trochę z tymi dziwnymi nazwami ulic. Szczerze polecam!

It was not bad at all, and obviously got better as it went on, it was slow, to begin with.
So, the author. He was (or was) a very prominent left-wing journalist and activist (as far as I know) when he was younger. He was one of the two journalists who actually told the public about Swedish secret services that were in effect abroad and in our own country. Obviously, the story is based on what he found out, though it should be noted that it is heavily dramatized and I don't think we´ve ever had a Secret Service agent like Hamilton, haha.
I think the book was a little slow in the beginning because it heavily involved us readers in the world of police work, and I´m just not interested in that, at all. I much preferred the last 70-100 pages of the book for the action and solution.
This book handles a subject that is very difficult to talk about right now. Palestinians and Israelis. I do believe Jan Guillou is for Palestinians still, though I´m not here to speculate on that particular point, he was however very much for Palestinians in the past, and probably around when this book was written. I think there is a point in stating that civilians on both sides are dying, and acts of terror from either side are unforgivable. But I think this book brings up the need that the Swedish state (not the people) have for standing behind the State of Israel no matter what (as can be seen towards the end where it, until the epi, is claimed in media to not be Israelis who are the "bad guys". Again this is just a work of fiction (based on real-life organisations) and the people in these books are not real. But it is of course influenced by the time and the author's own ideas and thoughts.
In the end, I think it´s a good book, with a good main character, Carl Hamilton, though I wish he would have had more of an arc in this book, I´m not sure I feel like I know him just yet but maybe that´s the whole point.

Trillerikirjallisuuden kärkikastia tämä Hamilton -sarjan avausosa. Ei kovin vauhdikas (loppua lukuunottamatta), mutta Guillou rakentaa omalla perusteellisella ja huolellisella tavallaan uskottavan kokonaisuuden. Ja kuten aina, hänen hahmonsa ovat kiinnostavia, eikä heitä ole kuorrutettu tyypillisillä rikoskirjallisuuden kliseillä ja stereotypioilla. No ok, Carl Hamilton on kyllä kaikessa nuori-rikas-upseeri ja herrasmies-tappavan tehokas erikoismies- yhdistelmässään vähän epätodellinen, mutta vähät siitä, pieni glamour sankarissa ei haittaa minua yhtään. Otan sen sata kertaa mieluummin kuin ne iänikuiset alkoholisoituneet ja milloin mistäkin traumatisoituneet päähenkilöt, joita varsinkin pohjoismainen rikoskirjallisuus on pullollaan.

Die Romanvorlage zur auch im ZDF ausgestrahlten (und daher in der zugehörigen Mediathek immer wieder mal (im Originalton, also mit viel Schwedisch) verfügbaren) Agentenserie „Hamilton“.
Der als Terroranschlag aufgefasste Mord an einem ranghohen Polizeibeamten erschüttert Schweden und die von der Säpo geführten Ermittlungen sollen zur ersten Bewährungsprobe für den jungen Protagonisten Carl Hamilton, der über spezielle Fähigkeiten verfügt, werden. Nach einigem für alle Beteiligten zähen und ergebnisarmen Ermitteln geht es erst voran, als die Gruppe etwas kreativer wird und vor allem Carl sich ins Getümmel stürzt.
Guillou erzählt sicher kenntnisreich und wahnsinnig detailreich (seitenlange Geheimdienstberichte werden nicht zusammengefasst, sondern in langen Auszügen wiedergegeben) eine Geschichte aus der Welt der Geheimdienste in den 1980er Jahren. Durch diverse Details fest in ihrer Zeit verankert, sind einige Aspekte dennoch überraschend aktuell. Der Vorgesetzte Näslund nimmt auf der langen Liste der Man-nehme-einen-kompletten-Vollidioten-den-niemand-ernstnehmen-kann-und-der-mit-seiner-Dämlichkeit-manches-verzögert-aber-insgesamt-eine-wunderbare-Ausrede-liefert-die-Regeln-weiter-auszulegen-Chefs einen Platz sehr, sehr weit oben ein.

Das Buch ist der Anfang der mehrteiligen Coq-Rouge-Serie. Die Hinrichtung mitten in Schweden ist der Auftakt zu einer aufwändigen Suche nach dem Täter: ist das palästinensische Terrormilieu, ein professioneller Einzeltäter, möglicherweise ein russischer Hintergrund vorstellbar? Oder sind „die Russen“, „die Israelis“ oder andere Mächte als Helfer (für die eine oder für die andere Seite) vorstellbar?
Jan Guilou hat hier einen politischen Krimi entworfen, in dem lange nicht wirklich klar ist, wer nun „die Guten“ und wer nun „die Bösen“ sind. Das ist ein schöner Pluspunkt, weil tatsächlich die „Sympathien“ stets wechseln und jede Seite plausible Motive für ihr Handeln hat.
Für mich ist das aber auch gleichzeitig etwas „der Pferdefuß“, weil der Fokus daher sehr auf dem „Enttüddeln“ dieser ganzen Verwicklungen und Beziehungen ist.
Dass es in Krimis / Thrillern immer Nebenstränge gibt, ist klar, aber hier wurde mir das irgendwann etwas zu viel, zumal etliche davon „im Sande verliefen“ ohne plausibel aufgelöst zu werden. Da wurde nach meiner Einschätzung Potential verschenkt.
Dass Hamilton noch in seine Rolle reinwachsen muss, fand ich plausibel, und das wird er auch im Laufe der Reihe.
=> nette, schnelle Lektüre, die „nicht wehtut“.

Jag blev betydligt mer fångad av Coq Rouge än vad jag hade tänkt mig när jag började lyssna på ljudboken häromdagen. Uppläsaren (Tomas Bolme) gör ett ypperligt jobb med att ge boken och dialogen i den liv, genom att bl.a. använda olika röster till olika personer på ett sätt som jag verkligen uppskattade. Guillous stundtals formalistiska myndighetssvenska görs sig också ganska väl i uppläst dialog.
Carl Hamilton är helt klart en bra huvudperson, även om hans nästan fullständiga avsaknad av brister stundtals störde mig lite. Hamilton framstod dock enligt min uppfattning som mer sympatisk (och till viss mån mer mänsklig) i Coq Rogue än vad han gjorde I Nationens Intresse (som jag konstigt nog läste innan Coq Rogue).
Bra action, bra karaktärer och spännande twists. Jag uppskattade i synnerhet de delar som handlade om det inre maskineriet i myndighets-Sverige och Säpo, samt de kontakter som förekommer mellan Hamiltion och utländska underrättelsetjänster . Därutöver är det roligt att Erik Ponti förekommer i Coq Rogue (som man ju har fått bekantat sig med i flera av Guillous andra böcker). Sammantaget ett mycket habilt spiondrama, och jag kommer definitivt att fortsätta lyssna på Hamiltonserien på ljudbok.

Det å finne de beste romanene i spionsjangeren har blitt et eget lite prosjekt. Det høres lett ut, hvertfall om en liker Le Carré, men når en synes han er litt kjedelig er det raskt litt verre.
Hva med Guillou sin Hamilton da, er det som Forsyth eller Le Carré? Det skal vise seg at det er nærmere Mankells Wallander. Uansett, klessetrynet Carl blir hentet fra "uniten" for å få arbeidstrening i etterretningstjenesten. Carls Rød Ungdom-lignende bakgrunn vil nemlig rote kraftig med byråets HR-politikk, noe Carls mentor er særskilt positiv til.
Politikk er det mye av og i sentrum for denne nesten 40 år gamle boka er Palestina og Israel. Her er det ikke lenge siden Mossads mislykkede aksjon i Lillehammer, men først og fremst er det potensielle aksjoner fra palestinske terrorister etterretningstjenesten leter etter.
Carl skal altså få litt av hvert å bryne seg på når jakt på en politimorder kanskje ikke går helt i retning hans ledere ønsker seg.

I really enjoyed the book. I read it the first time as a teenager and it is very much a document of its time.
The swedish narrator (a famous actor) did a great job with the rather dry, and to-the-point text. As an adult with ten plus years of working in the social services I could read the book on another level comparec to my youth. Feeling more for the tired, cynical police officers who are held back from doing their jobb by a heavy handed political organisation, rather than the real hero.
That more than anything felt realistic. It was also believable and interesting how the security police created their own reality (like any organisation).
It was also very nice to read a book in swedish and Hamilton felt very swedish compared to many other heroes of other books. I am not sure I will read every book in the (long) series but I will visit Coq Rouge again.

I spent a long time reading this book in Norwegian. Most of the reason for this is the endless amount of typos (yes, that’s right, typos)! The book can’t have been proofread at all, the typos are everywhere!
With that said, Carl Hamilton is a fantastic character but I find this first book a tough read, mostly because of a ”heavy” language and a very slowly building story, with the action taking place over the last 20 pages or so. But I will continue reading this series because I love the character of Hamilton!

Gode personbeskrivelser og gode beskrivelser af 1980’erne, men desværre også megen ujævn læsning med mange ulogiske plots og tynde baggrundshistorier.
Hvordan kan det fx lade sig gøre for meget venstre-orienterede ekstremister, at infiltrere Sveriges Radio, og på kort tid nå til tops i ledelsen af flere forskellige svenske medier, uden at nogen bemærker noget og fx opdager, at ingen af dem har nogen journalistisk uddannelse??? - Det er simpelthen for utroværdigt, og der er for mange af denne slags dårligt underbyggede del-plots i løbet af bogen, der ellers er rimelig godt skrevet.
Hvordan kan det fx lade sig gøre for meget venstre-orienterede ekstremister, at infiltrere Sveriges Radio, og på kort tid nå til tops i ledelsen af flere forskellige svenske medier, uden at nogen bemærker noget og fx opdager, at ingen af dem har nogen journalistisk uddannelse??? - Det er simpelthen for utroværdigt, og der er for mange af denne slags dårligt underbyggede del-plots i løbet af bogen, der ellers er rimelig godt skrevet.

Es hat sehr lange gedauert, aber ich habe dieses Buch endlich gelesen.
Fremd, es auf deutsch zu lesen wie es dem Hamilton vergeht, denn bis jetzt hatte ich niederländische Übersetzungen dieser Serie.
Es hat mir gur gefallen, nun die Umstände zu erfahren, worauf der Autor in den späteren Bücher zurückkehrt.
Und, wie immer: gut feschrieben und interessante Geschehen. Freue mich schon auf das folgende Buch!

Jag är generellt inte så intresserad av deckare men har aldrig läst Guillou och kände igen namnet på serien. Boken har fokus på utredning och mysteriet i stort kring händelsen i första kapitlet. Detta är det närmaste en svensk John Wick jag stött på, med en närmast övermänsklig huvudperson som tar sig an faror utan att höja på ögonbrynet. Jag kommer nog att läsa även de följande böckerna i serien.

Vet inte om den här är dum eller vansinnigt smart när man har studerat de verkliga händelserna bakom operation Wrath of God. Hamilton känns overklig som karaktär, stenrik, adlig och ändå vänsteranhängare men det är väl meningen att han skall vara någon slags James Bond karaktär som är större än livet.

Läste någon gång början 20'. Tyckte det var dags att läsa något på svenska. Ljudbok fungerade med bra, tappade nog inte fokus så många gånger :)
