Sách bản tiếng Việt thiếu các hình màu trong bản gốc nên khó hình dung và tham khảo đến các tác phẩm khi đọc phân tích. Hình ảnh ít và các chi tiết lịch sử hội hoạ có phần khô khan, nếu như người đọc chưa từng đọc qua lịch sử phương Tây và một số kiến thức về lịch sử nghệ thuật thì khó mà hiểu được những gì được viết trong cuốn Dẫn nhập này. Tuy vậy chương đầu phân tích về Nghệ thuật là gì và chương cuối Tương lai của Nghệ thuật khá thấu đáo và bao quát từ quá khứ đến hiện tại.

nếu nói đây là một cuốn sách bao quát đủ những thứ cần biết về lịch sử nghệ thuật Nhân Loại thì không đúng. Bởi vì nó chỉ nhắm đến lịch sử nghệ thuật Phương Tây, và coi Phương Đông như một phong trào mà Phương Tây chạy theo. Và nếu coi đây như là một quyển hướng dẫn phù hợp với những người không biết gì về lịch sử hay nghệ thuật thì cũng không đúng, bởi tác giả đã assumed rằng người đọc đã biết chút gì đó về môi trường của họ (môi trường Âu-Mỹ). Đa phần những cái không ổn của quyển sách đến từ khâu xuất bản chứ không phải từ cách viết hay nội dung. điểm cộng là đã có giải thích những thuật ngữ ở cuối sách. Nhưng điểm trừ là thiếu đi hình ảnh minh hoạ, mà đấy lại là cái cốt lõi của những quyển sách nghệ thuật. Tuy vậy, nội dung vẫn được trình bày mạch lạc, đủ các khía cạnh cơ bản của nghệ thuật. Không phải là đọc quyển sách sẽ không tiếp thu được thông tin gì mới. Nhưng để đạt được hiệu quả cao thì rất cần có Google Images kế bên để có thể hình dung cái tinh thần hội hoạ mà tác giả đang miêu tả.

Good one. Tad repetitive. The author lost it for me when he started supporting 'modern, conceptual' art like 'Piss Christ'. An OK read.

The structure and flow of this beginner's guide to art really suit the purpose, which I have experienced first hand as one with no knowledge of what is art, where it came from, how to judge it ... has now a high level idea of art as revealed by the author. I especially like the chapter on the brief history of Western Art, which gives me an overview of the various art ideas and themes dating from stone age to present. Just want to point out that this book covers mainly Western art ... meaning some chapters like Form and Meaning; Purpose of Art etc may not rightly apply to non-Western art.

I wanted to rate the book 3 stars only, because it did not give a clear guidance to approach art. It fell into listing and explaining famous art works. However, thanks to its explanation, I felt like in a different state of enjoying art. It did make me more open to art, specially the Hugo's shudder ones. That's why one extra star.

- Trả lời những câu hỏi cơ bản về Nghệ thuật như nghệ thuật là gì, bắt đầu từ đâu, phân tích các tác phẩm nổi tiếng từ thời cổ đại cho đến đương đại, các tác phẩm gây tranh cãi.
- có lẽ bản dịch tiếng Việt nên để tiêu đề là dẫn nhập về nghệ thuật thị giác? (thì đúng hơn là nghệ thuật nói chung) vì cuốn này chỉ tập trung vào hội họa, điêu khắc và một chút về kiến trúc, còn lại không nhắc tới âm nhạc, điện ảnh, sân khấu, múa, văn chương và nhiếp ảnh.
Mà đọc về cái phải thưởng thức bằng mắt lại toàn chữ là chữ nên có hơi thất vọng chút. Tranh thì không có màu, đoạn nào phân tích tác phẩm lại phải google khá bất tiện.
- Đoạn kể về bức tượng David và truyền thuyết đằng sau khá hay. (vừa đọc xong quyển David & Goliath dưới góc độ tâm lý học nên càng thấy có liên kết)
- biết thêm được 1 tác phẩm thuộc trào lưu nghệ thuật trôi khá thú vị là "Piano Piece" (1993) của Nam June Paik đề tặng John Cage (cứ nhắc đến ông này lại nghĩ đến bản 4 phút 33 giây)

A good book for introducing art. There are six questions the author approached to Art. From defining what is art, to its history from the ancient times to now, the sources for art, its form and interpreting meaning, the purposes, and the question of "controversy."

It's dense, and pretty boring I would say, and some I just don't believe in, especially the Derridean method and most definitions of art in the 20th century.

Picked this up in a charity shop, and I couldn't put it down! A wonderful introduction to a world I knew so little about. Although many galleries are lost on me, I now appreciate the significance of art to culture, philosophy, and human experience that little bit more. I'd very much recommend this to the reader who, like me, just doesn't "get" art.

I found this book really useful in giving a good overview of the history of art from ancient times through to the last decade. Of course it's not going to be massively in depth as it's not a massive tome, but it speaks in layman's terms and keeps to key facts about art, where things came from, how ideas /styles etc transformed through the ages. I studied art at college and the books we were suggested were so wieldy and dare I say boring I could never get into them, whereas this book taught me some new stuff in a language that didn't require consulting a dictionary every five minutes. The one thing I didn't like about this was that the book often refers back to several images multiple times, this was fine for the colour plates sandwiched in the middle with the thick glossy paper, but for the black and white images just embedded in the pages they weren't too easy to go back and locate without a page number for reference.
