Syd has what she's always wanted. Thanks to her demon's sacrifice, she is finally normal. Why then does she want her magic back so badly? Her loss couldn't come at a worse time. A storm is brewing, one that could devour the entire world. Syd refuses to accept she will never be a witch again, doing everything possible to rescue her demon.
I write a lot of paranormal books for someone who is afraid of the dark. And I wonder why I have to sleep with the lights on. Sometimes life is a teenaged B horror movie and I'm the one who investigates when the scary music is playing. But the voices are calling and resistance is… Yes. I am a Star Trek geek, too. And a fan of RPG’s. With a slight coolness factor since I've been told I'm allowed to join the pops.
They say, be careful what you wish for, and in “The Wild” Sydlynn Hayle finds out exactly what that means. She had always wanted a normal life just like any other teenager. Now she has that; her demon taken from her and her magical power somehow bound. When Brad Peters - who had been attracted to her because of her magic and his own latent magic - dumps her, and Quaid Moromond seems to be ignoring her, she starts regretting her wish for normality. Add to this the frustration of not having her demon and her magic when the coven is in dire need of her help, and we have a very frustrated and sorry-for-herself young girl. The dreams that she and her friend Pain have, add an unexpected twist to an already exciting and suspenseful story.
As is usually the case with Patti Larsen's books, I simply could not put the book down. Apart from continuous action and nonstop suspense which kept me riveted, the author has a tremendously comfortable and easy-to-read way of telling the story. I particularly loved the quirky and often hilarious dialogue. Talk about hilarious, Syd's thoughts and inner dialogue had me howling with laughter. Even while thinking serious thoughts, Syd still has a funny way of expressing things to herself.
Except for normal developmental changes, the author kept all her characters' personalities consistent throughout the series so far. This helps the reader to love, understand and sympathize with all the characters - even the not so nice ones. She brilliantly integrates Syd's normal life of school, friends and boyfriends into her paranormal dealings with the coven, thus making the story so much more believable.
I would advise readers to get the first three books in the Hayle Coven Series before reading “The Wild”. A huge cheer for Patti Larsen for another beautifully told story and a well deserved five stars. (Ellen Fritz)
This book twisted and turned so much that it was hard to keep up! I think there were three sub-plots as well as the main storyline..! There was a lot more teenager-y ewwy gooey-iness in this one which almost brought it down a star, but I will over look it because I was waiting on it. Totally floored by the ending and can't wait for the next book.
I adore keeping up with the Hayle Coven. I bought this book at 4 in the afternoon and ended up staying up and finishing it before I went to bed that night. I'm so glad the series has 20 books (even though I'm anxious to continue all the story lines).
This Hayle Coven is the bomb! I love the continuation of the lives of the main characters. This series is expensive as there are 20 books. Each one ends in a cliff-hanger so you must read the next one to see how it turned out. Great marketing game.
Syd finally is free of her powers. She has everything she wanted. She is finally normal. But instead of finding happiness she feels more alone than ever and feels more cut off from her own life. Even her own family aren't fighting her need for normalcy anymore. Worse, they not only seem to accept her normalcy but leave her out of family business. Isn't this what she always wanted? So then why does she suddenly feel so empty and without purpose? In this fourth chapter of The Hayle Coven series Sydlynn Hayle has finally got everything she wanted and fought for. She is finally independent of her own conflicts, her family and her destiny. She is free to create her own destiny and go her own way. But then why, when she finally has everything she thought she always wanted, is everything falling apart? Is normality really all its cracked up to be?
This fourth chapter in Syd's story has her fighting to get back what she wanted to lose in the first place. But first she has to fight to be heard. She has to now convince everyone in her life that she was wrong. But nobody seems to listen. Not only that but she keeps on having these dreams that she knows she should understand but cannot. As she feels cut off from everyone in her own family, she is forced to question everything she knows as truth to find the key to fixing everything. There are even greater mysteries at work as she realises her family is battling an even greater conflict that makes her own conflicts seem paltry in comparison. But is Syd truly powerless? Or has the sacrifice of her own identity birthed a newer power? Syd is faced with even more questions that she has to ask herself. As Syd realises she is seemingly powerless, she finally comes to accept who she truly is. She finally knows who she wants and what she wants but it may be too late. She is in a race against time to save not only her lost self, but the boy she now knows is meant for her, and as much as she may be powerless this will not stop her in trying to saving her family from the very dangerous ancient threat of destruction.
Patti Larsen has once again crafted a plot that is a maze of twists and turns. Just when you think you have this story figured out, she throws you another curveball. I love reading a book that has me guessing until the last page and wondering, heart in throat, whether there is enough time to save everyone. Patti weaves even more layers of mystery into Syd's story.

This series keeps getting better and better, and that’s hard to say for any series really. Ms. Larsen’s imagination has no boundaries and the trials and tribulations she puts her characters through are heart wrenching and soul shaking. This installment is no exception.
Syd continues her stumbling awkwardness through life as witch, even though now she’s been left powerless since losing her demon in the last book. I felt so bad for her since she’s gotten what she wanted initially (to be normal), but at the wrong time and under the worst circumstances. Especially now that the Fey are waking up and The Wild Hunt is coming for Syd’s mother Miriam for her ‘stolen’ fey powers. The descriptions of the Wild Hunt were frightening and it had me worrying all about her family, heck the whole city and world for crying out loud, for when they do wake up and bring their wrath upon the earth. Yeah, that bad.
The suspense in this one was harrowing. The stakes become so much higher as Syd is pushed from the coven for a variety of reasons and she tries to make the best of what is going on. Quaid has shunned her and even Brad, who seems to have only liked her for the way her magic made him side feel better, but now even he seems disinterested in her. It’s all one fine mess and it had me worrying not only for Syd, but her entire family. Hey, she does tend to save the day for her coven most days, but what will they do without her? And no one seems to want to help the girl out! I’m just relieved that Syd is as determined as ever to find her demon and restore her magic in any way possible. Even if it means facing an old enemy who tried to kill her once. One that holds the key to her magic and could very well destroy her.
Did I say this series is addictive? One of the worst addictions possible forms when you start reading this series. Thank goodness there are twenty books in this amazing series because I would seriously start withdrawing from tagging along with Syd and her awesomesauce life if I ran out of books to read with her in them. It’s just that epically amazing and you’ll be reading until the last page clicks on through. It’s definitely one of the best series I’ve ever read.
Bittersweet, that's what The Wild was. I zoomed right through the four books in this series that have been published. When I began this one, I was excited to continue into the story but also sad because book five is not out for me to read yet :( I am really in love with this series and will be chomping at the bit to get my hands on book five!
The Wild picks up right from where Demon Child ended. Syd is still minus her demon, and it seems that everyone hates her or is mad at her now. Way for everyone to be supportive, while they still have their magic in tact, right? Even the coven is giving her the cold shoulder and she has been banned from attending the meetings. Not only is Syd feeling abandoned, but her now-mortal father and her mother are so wrapped up in coven business, what with The Wild riders coming to destroy earth as they know it and rebuild. Now that Syd has the freedom she always longed for, something doesn't feel right. There is still some sort of magic lurking inside of her, the same magic that was causing Syd and her demon to never mesh in the first place. Now it is a race against time, with Quaid and Sunny by her side, to track down The Chosen of the Light and reclaim what rightfully belongs to her, not to mention save the world!
There wasn't as much action in The Wild as in the previous books but I still enjoyed every single word of it. I had an idea on where Syd's "other" magic came from but wasn't 100% sure until Patti chose to revealed it. As with each book prior, I still wanted to slap Celeste silly. That woman! Patti Larsen has a way of writing that will easily make her one of your favorite authors. The Hayle Coven novels are fast paced and full of suspense that are enjoyable for all ages of readers, from teens to adults. Grab your copy of Family Magic (book one) and you will be surprised how fast you devour each book in this series! Now, if only I culd get my hands on book five *tapping my nails in "patience"*
I really enjoyed this book. I really like many of the characters, and I've grown to know them and love them even more as I've read further into this series. The only problem I have found with this series of books is that I can only pick them up and read them when I have nothing going on, because once I pick up a Hayle Coven novel, I cannot put it down.
This book was particularly engaging because Syd, the main character, was forced to come to terms with something that she'd wished for her entire life: she had to learn to live without magic. And she learned that the one thing she'd wished for her entire life was not actually what she wanted at all. This is a new and interesting side of Syd, given her aversion to magic that she expressed so ardently in all the previous books. Author Patti Larsen did a great job of letting the reader know how smothered and frustrated Syd felt without her magic. She's used to being able to feel and connect with people in certain ways, on certain levels, and without her magic, she wasn't able to do that.
There were a few loose ends that were not tied up at the end, and I hope they will be explored more in the next book. Syd's friendship with Allison, for example, was kind of left broken and unfinished. Since Allison is a person who needs a strong friend, I'd like to see them work things out, at least somewhat. And the character of Pain and her magic needs to be explored a bit more, though this book does a great job of exploring what it might be like to live with suppressed power and identity.
My absolute favourite character in this book was Gram. I've always liked the scenes in the book with Gram, but in this book, she really comes through. And we finally find out what she's been asking Syd to give back. I'm looking forward to getting to know this character all over again.
And now, to get the next book in this series... :)
I saw Ms. Larsen's first book Family Magic on BookBub.com and thought it sounded interesting, a which demon gal, different. That hooked me to buy the first story in the 20 book series. The writing and characters kept me hooked through the remaining 19 books. I rarely will buy Ebooks when they're $5.99 ... after Family Magic I didn't blink, just bought the next one and downloaded. I just had to see what was going to happen next. I really got invested in the story line, wanting to know what twists and turns would happen next. I don't know how many times I burst out laughing or cried my eyes out as the story unfolded (make sure you have a box of tissues for the last couple books you'll need them), or how often I didn't want to put the book down (but had to because my lunch hour was over) The characters were believable ... some you fell in love with, others you loved to hate. Anything I write about the story will give away what happens, but so you have to read them and see what happened. You won't be sorry you picked them up. I just wish there was more after book story, but there are more in the Hayle Coven universe. I read the books one after another, so this is the same review for all of them.
I'm 50 and enjoy young adult books because the lack of sex scenes in them You get to know the characters more in them. Although Syd does have sex in some of them, there is no description of it, just mentioned that she did have it and maybe waking up with her boyfriend. My niece is 14 and I'd give them to her to read.
Syd just wanted to be normal her whole life and finally in a round about way her wish was granted. Now being normal "sucked" and she realized just what she had and wants it back. Brad is no longer interested in her because she is normal and even Quaid seems to be running in the opposite direction. Prom night literally turns into the night from hell and to add insult to injury, her boyfriend Brad dumps her. Life couldn't get much worse - or could it? In a desperate race against time, Syd must find her demon before all hell breaks loose and help the coven defend itself against a supernatural enemy to save the world. No pressure right, Syd gets assistance from an unlikely source and tracks down her demon but also uncovers just why her magic won't meld together with her demon and the outcome is startling. All the pieces of the puzzle fall into place finally but will it be enough to protect her family.
This one was solved a little too easily, and it was well past time to finish the story line of Syd's Grandma always asking her for something. I started to get upset at her Mom, but was happy to see the author had a good reason for Miriam's actions. Not my favorite, but I will continue on to the next one.
I really like this series. It is great to see Syd growing and coming into her own. Finally accepting what she is meant to be - an important part of the family. I also like the fact that you never really know what is going to happen next. I did figure out the thing with Gram though. Getting ready to start the next!
This series is surprisingly good. I never thought I would be reading YA fiction in my retirement years, but I received the first book, "Family Magic" as a freebie and I'm hooked!
As always, I'm completely pulled into Syd's world. I kinda saw the thing with Gram coming, but to all of it. I mean, wow. Sidhe blood, hiding her true self, but then being nuts so Syd couldn't use her magic properly. Didn't totally see that coming. I'm still a little confused on how the Sidhe princess chose her? But it's cool how she stepped up and was all magicy with her witch, demon, and Sidhe selves, weird as that sounds. So, I totally got thrown for a loop with Alison, by the way. Oh, speaking of her friends, that thing with Pain and Cydia and Shaylee was COOL! But poor Pain. I'm glad she's all right now. But anyways. Alison. I don't like her mom. I don't like either of their actions. And I don't like the stealing of the boyfriend stuff. Puh-lease. Alison is clearly messed up. OK, so going back to the whole 3 selves thing, before that happened, and Sydlynn was totally powerless, I really felt for her. Yeah, she was being kinda bratty, but who wouldn't be with half (or in this case, 1/3, even though she didn't know it) missing? I can't blame her for making sure everyone was looking. Oh, speaking of people, I have a bone to pick: Quaid. He was a jerk at first, but I respect that he wanted to give her space and see if she wanted to be normal without him. But now he's gone looking for his family, after I had just forgiven him and been all "I love you" again. So. ANNOYING. I wonder if a new boy toy is coming to town...We'll see. Onto the next one!
