A young scientist, Ava Majestic, is pitted against an egotistical billionaire, Augustus Agnotico. He believes she is in possession of an artifact with special powers and hires a rogue, Needle, to follow her as she travels through space, investigating planets to clear them for habitation. Needle, drawn to Ava, quits working for Agnotico and teams up with her. On the planet Tangerine, they encounter life forms never before seen, confront danger, and discover a treasure of immense power. She and Needle learn they are the heirs to this fantastic device. In the face of Agnotico’s relentless pursuit, the couple must find a way to prevent Agnotico from gaining possession of their legacy, even if it means his death. From the wild reaches of space and back again, Tangerine takes the reader into a future where long-distance space travel is commonplace and aliens are a natural part of everyday life.
I can see why this novel was traditionally published. It has all the makings of a great movie!
I don’t normally read science fiction books, but I love this one! The characters were believable, and enjoyable. As the book description mentions, Ava’s assignment was to investigate planets to clear them for habitation. With the threat of Agnotico gaining possession of her and Needle’s legacy, this was very exciting.
Long-distance space travel becoming commonplace….imagine that!
I love the description of the planet, Tangerine. Whenever the author mentioned it, I could easily picture it.
If you enjoy reading science fiction, I’m certain you need to add this wonderful book to your reading list. Now!
The novel was enjoyable and easy to read. Ava as the main character was very likeable and the author did a nice job making the character's emotions and reactions relatable. The supporting characters are also well done, especially Needle and Augustus Agnotico, who are the two major characters in the novel besides Ava herself. Ava's pet Pisk, a kind of alien cat who can speak, was also fun to read about. I enjoyed the interaction between him and Ava.
The universe that Wodke Hawkinson creates for Tangerine is really well constructed and believable. I enjoyed the job Ava was hired for - exploring planets to determine if they can be colonized by humans and I also liked the moon stations that allowed you to jump from galaxy to galaxy. Alien species that we encounter in the novel were created and described very well.
After finishing the novel, I personally felt like the prologue and final chapter kept this novel from truly shining. The prologue feels disconnected from the rest of the story. Eventually you begin to connect the dots and you find out how it's relevant, but it would have been nice if the transition was smoother. While the ending was satisfying and well planned, I think the execution was a little off. A confrontation between two characters passed by too quick. The ending wasn't bad at all, but at the same time I wouldn't say it was fantastic. It was satisfactory. The epilogue was enjoyable however, leading us to believe that one day Wodke Hawkinson may return to the Tangerine universe so we can read more advantures about Ava and Needle.
Despite the issues I previously discussed, I enjoyed Tangerine. I would recommend it to any readers looking for a new science fiction novel. The characters were great, the world was complex, and the story was engaging. If you're looking for a story about exploration and self-discovery, then you should definitely check out Tangerine!
For a PHD doctor the main character doesn't appear to be too bright. She is constantly getting into trouble and can think of nothing but revenge for the death of her parents. When the book has action that actually occurs on the planet Tangerine then it is more interesting.
Story started off great with lots of potential, then... the story turned with character decisions completely out of sync with the rationality that was laid down in the first few chapters.
