I've been reading this book for five years. I believe I am making progress now. Semiotics is one of those fields of study that is both totally obvious and maddeningly incomprehensible, especially to a dilettante like yours truly... I am an advocate of taking my sweet time.

Completed reading #MediaSemiotics_AnIntroduction by #jonathanbignell.

Professor at the University of Reading, Jonathan Bignell, writes about British television history and methodologies of film and television analysis. In this highly accessible book, he uses semiotics as a tool to study the various contents of mass communication. The book consisted of nine chapters, including an introduction and conclusion.

The chapters are thematically divided. The first chapter provides an introduction to the concepts of sign and myth, thereby providing an introduction to the Saussurean and Barthian models of semiology. The chapter briefly mentions the Peircean model of semiotics as well.

The second chapter provides semiotic analysis of advertisements. The third chapter provides a semiotic analysis of women's magazines. The fourth chapter discusses the newspaper analysis. Television news and its semiotic analysis are discussed in chapter fifth. And chapter six continues discussion on more television content. The seventh chapter provides a semiotic analysis of cinema.
Chapter eight offers general conclusions, at the same time, the author also raises the issues faced by structuralist semiotics and post-structuralist concerns of semiotic analysis.

This can be an excellent text-book to teach Media Semiotics if the faculty is already well-versed with basics of semiotics.

This text was very useful to me in understanding and undertaking semiotic analysis. Bignell explains the topic with confidence. The difficulty is graduated so that each section builds upon the last so that your understanding is cumulatively built, and references are made repeatedly to previously learned ideas so that they are mentally linked and refreshed.

This is a solid introduction to the most popular component and deployment of semiotics: media semiotics. There is attention to the history of semiotics, the differences between the differences between the key theorists and great attention to applications. The chapter on advertising is the strongest, but film and television is also considered.

This is an upper undergraduate text, but is also useful for postgraduate students.
