The Cumbrian Cutting is my favourite poem in this book - brilliant internal symmetry. It's a bit of a mish-mash of a book, with the story at the end rather rambling. I think I prefer the poetry. But sometimes the stories go poetic and you find yourself liking them more. I've had this ages and only just properly finished it.
Vaguely remember him being on tv a lot in early 90s and saw this first edition hardcover in Oxfam for two quid and took a punt....hmm quirky poetry can sometimes be a bit naff: irritating puns and playing on double meanings.
Upsettingly, I got to page 22 and had a hard time getting on with it. I knew by then that this wasn't for me. Don't get me wrong...this book had potential especially with the illustrations alongside with some of the poems. Maybe I should try some newer work by Hegley. Sorry!!
Happy memories of college! Mr R P Manwaring introduced me to la Hegley, to the beauties of Rover and Pat, and this was my very first copy! He's amazing, although I could've probably done without the lengthy dreamlike story at the end.
