Left by her mother at a young age, Kyra has grown-up in the foster system, leaving her angry and hateful towards the world. The only person she can trust is Hammond, her case worker who has watched over her since the time her mother left. When Hammond places Kyra in a foster home located in a small town, strange things begin happening and Kyra starts unraveling the mystery of her past. When Kyra’s life is threatened, she is saved by an angel, her guardian angel, Ashur, who falls from heaven to save her. Together, Ashur and Kyra must figure out why her life is in danger and stop a strange cult from bringing about the end of days. "I didn’t just fall from heaven to save your life…” Ashur pulls me in closer until my chest touches his. “…I came here because after all those years, I could not spend another moment of eternity knowing that you would not be there.” He begins to sweep his head down toward mine. I know what’s coming and I can’t allow it. Turning away, I say, “I can’t.” My objection is not that I don’t love him, but that I can’t love him. He is an angel, I am a mortal. Two worlds that never have, and never will exist together. “You know as well as I do that this can never be. No matter how desperately we may want it. What will become of us?”“I don’t know,” he says. “I don’t care.”“Well, I do,” I say. “All this will end and you will have to go back. And I will be left here alone.”“But…”“No,” I say, sternly. “It’s better this way.”Our eyes meet and I look away, but his eyes do not retreat as if they are holding me in place, preventing me from leaving.Approximately 75,500 wordsReviews for "The Dawn of Angels" -- "Angel books have taken the reading world by storm lately. My Review (no spoilers, pretty much):

The Dawn of Angels was a big surprise for me. I'm not sure what I expected, but I was unprepared for this ride!

The story is fast-paced. The main character, Kyra, is an angry girl and the story opens on her seventeenth birthday. Her issues are valid. She’s been stuffed through the foster care system having been abandoned by her mom. So, this book just dives into the story, no hesitations.

Which brings me to how this book felt for me: Rollercoaster. Pure Emotion. I rode up and down on Anger, Good-will, Suspicion, Fear and that’s not counting the dream-like quality of many scenes, including actual dreams. The dreams and reality mix and blend freakily together.

You’ve seen the cartoon movie Dumbo, right? You know that scene when shapes are blowing up and shrinking and odd animals are growing protrusions? It feels like that. (I just sold this book for someone!! Hahahaha)

There’s just enough hint at real horror: moving shadows that can grasp and pull someone under to cut off their breath; red-eyed wild dogs. And then there's these angels. OMG! If I had been someone in the Bible, this is the sort of angel I would imagine, with white-hot eyes, using the power of light to push back the darkness.

And then the story takes over again, which is almost trite by comparison.

There are no wasted characters watching from the sidelines, every one of them holds a secret(s) and they all focus on Kyra (with hints or friendliness or wariness or hatred). The town being “small” does not account for every single person being a critical player.

Kyra’s was bright spot in this story for me. She is the anchor on this wild ride, the one person who always makes real sense. Usually. Asher's cute and potentially more than cute - potentially amazing - but not revealed completely in this book. Ethan is also mostly mystery and I wouldn't go so far to call this threesome a "love triangle". Yea.. not yet. Each relationship Kyra has is deep and makes sense - like Liv, for example, is so sweet! She's very much a side character, but she has her own struggles and triumphs and a deep, special meaning for Kyra. Gotta love that.

As for the historical background, the angels know who God is, which was comforting momentarily, and then the story gets wild. All written books about God and angels, including but not limited to The Bible, only tell parts of this historical backdrop. The information comes in thick heavy mini-doses that don’t make much sense on their own, but as the perspectives join together, the big picture does, uh, clarify itself in that dream-freaky way.

In this world... there are shadow men, there are warring angels, various levels of angels, levels of heavens, odd cults that are different and yet all point to something in this history. (This is a tad spoilerish to give you heads' up, but I would have appreciated knowing this stuff was actually intentional and not a side-dream moment. So, I share.)

Cover Commentary: It’s a bit of a surprise. Maybe the layered angel wing is supposed to tip off the layers of history or craziness? I’m not sure. It’s a deceptively innocent-lookin’ cover and did not give me head's up about what's inside this book. The title, however, is clear by the end. This book is very much about the beginning of angels and how that relates to present day.

My Rating: 3 - For writing, for content, for characters - "cute" doesn't fit with this book, though, more like "downright eerie". I'd give this book a higher rating for that complicated historical backdrop, but a lower rating for how it was delivered to the reader, so it evens out to a square 3 for me.

Kyra is a 17 year old girl who has been in the foster care system for years. But the family she's about to be placed with is her last chance for stability, because she's been so destructive that she's been kicked out of many other foster homes.

She is brought to a tiny town where she is placed with well meaning but odd foster parents, The Gregors. Soon she meets Ethan, their darkly handsome yard worker. She also finds a type of little sister in the girl next door, Liv.

One night Liv and Kyra get chased through the forest by a vicious pack of dogs. In the nick of time, they are saved by Kyra's guardian angel, Ashur. As Kyra helps him become used to life on Earth, he also helps her discover some truths about where she really came from.

I'm gonna make this review short and sweet because the book was under 200 pages...so I'll give you a simple list of things I did and did not like about the book.

Things I Liked:
--The mystery surrounding the town and its' people. The citizens of this town act very peculiar, and it's not until the end that you find out why. This was engrossing.
--There were some very funny quips scattered throughout the book. For example:
"Stop staring," I whisper loudly to her. Liv continues to stare. "But he's an angel," she whispers back, as if he is some sort of celebrity. "Believe me," I say, glancing at Ashur. "The novelty wears off fast."

--Kyra's jaded, take no prisoners attitude. She has been through a lot in her life, and though she is cynical, you can also tell that she is a caring individual and really does want to be happy with a family.
--The rich lore and mythology in the book. I enjoyed learning about the stories told of different hierarchies and types of celestial beings.

Things I Didn't Like
--The relationship between Ashur and Kyra...seems we have another case of insta-love. Bleh.
--Ethan. I didn't feel he was really relevant to the story, and to me he was just an extra character the story could have done without.
--The general syntax and flow of the story. Or lack thereof. Since this was a short book, I feel there were a lot of parts that could have benefited from a bit more fleshing out. But some of the sentences just didn't flow together.
--Everything happened very fast! This also speaks to the above point, about things needed more fleshing out. Sometimes in a book it's good when things happen quickly, but in this story I felt like events were happening one after another, so quickly I couldn't really follow.
--This book sometimes got a little too preachy and philosophical for my taste.

Something I'm on the fence about:
--The twists in the novel. I am a sucker for a good plot twist that I didn't see coming, but this one had so many towards the end I wasn't at all sure what was going on. I still can't decide if I liked this or not.

I enjoyed the ending of this book, and I'm happy I read it. Maybe bigger fans of angel books than I would enjoy this book a lot more.

Kyra, an angry and bitter 17-year-old, is given her last chance in the foster care system after violent behaviors. She’s taken to the town of Samos to live with the Gregors. The Gregors seem like a nice family, albeit kind of weird. Everything seems to go pretty well until Kyra notices strange things happening in the town.

This story had me hooked from the start. Kyra was an interesting character. She definitely had a lot of anger inside of her. To me, that felt real for a foster kid in the system. She’s quick to judge the people around her and was afraid to love. When she was sent to Samos, the town felt kind of creepy and mysterious. One can immediately tell from her foster family’s behavior that things weren’t completely right. I had a horror movie feeling as I read the book at first. All the mystery made me keep reading the book.

There were a lot of twists in the plots that kept me at the edge of my seats. I’m not an expertise on angels and religion and God, so I don’t know if the angelic story told here follows any religious teachings. Overall, I thought the paranormal element was very well done. I really enjoyed the backstory and world-building in this one.

However, the book wasn’t without its flaws. While Kyra’s anger seemed real at first, it was a bit too much angst for me. Everything keeps coming back to how she couldn’t trust anyone. It felt overly dramatic. I understand that she’s had a hard life, but these parts felt too smoothed over and were barely mentioned. It needed a bit more fleshing out for me to completely agree with Kyra in that she’s had a hard life. I’ve read plenty of books where heroines had worse things happen to them and wasn’t that bitter, so occasionally she came off as a bit whiny. The book also came off preachy, because whenever a topic comes up, such as love or hope, there’s some “belief” Kyra has about it, written in an omnipotent narrator POV than just a teenage girl’s.

The romance felt forced. It was insta-love, but the love felt like an afterthought more than anything. Kyra and Ashur didn’t really interact with one another and suddenly Kyra’s thinking about love. It was unrealistic to me and I wished the authors would have left that part out. As the romance wasn’t the main part of the story, it wouldn’t really have detracted from the story.

Lastly, while I thought the world-building was very interesting, everything was a bit confusing. Everything came to light near the end, but I wish the explanations were more spaced out so I wasn’t confused about what was going on half of the time, but since everything ties up in the end, this didn’t bother me too much.

Though it is quite clear that "Dawn of Angels" is built around a premise that involves angels; this book is not typical of "angel themed YA fiction." The difference between this work and similar ones of its niche is that the authors have gone to great lengths to bypass the "let's make the angel the main focus of the story" route.

In this tale, readers are allowed to give full attention to Kyra and the challenges that she faces as she comes to terms with who she is and what that means to her and those around her. We are allowed to dive head-first into the deep well of anger and loss that her character is fighting with all that she has to climb out of. Yes, the angels are important to the story, but the voice of the story and the point of view given is always that of Kyra. Please do not take the previous statements to mean that Kyra's character is allowed to overshadow others within this work. That is in no way the case. All of the supporting characters are allowed to add their own shade of light, dark, love, mystery, or in some cases quirk to a very complex work. Evidence of this is shown time after time in the relationships that Kyra has with her mother, her foster family, and her best friend Liv. They each have an interesting story to tell that has nothing to do with Kyra, but in which she has a role.

Another aspect of this story that makes it great is the quaintness of the setting. This plot gains quite a bit of its creditability from the fact that the setting is so far removed from what is considered "normal" and so closed to outer influence, that one can almost hear the theme from Psycho playing as you read the town's description. Samos is a place where everyone is just a bit too friendly, the lawns are a bit too green, and there are a few too many secrets.

On to the angels. Ashur is perfect because he is flawed. He is an angel, but he doesn't know all and is willing to allow Kyra to help him help her. The romance between Kyra and Ashur is well placed and timed so that it progresses naturally. Ethan is there to help-wink...wink. When he is not helping he is getting on Ashur's nerves.

This story is very well executed and highly engaging. The only thing that detracts from its cohesiveness is the seeming random variations in the mythos that surround the beliefs of the townspeople. The religious aspects are for the most part of a Christian nature, but there are elements of Greek and even mathematical theory that seem extraneous. This is a very good first book that more than sets the stage for those to follow. "An 'angel read' that is a slice of heaven."

The Dawn of Angels

By Vivienne Malynn and Sean Kade

Summary: Left by her mother at a young age, Kyra has grown-up in the foster system, leaving her angry and hateful towards the world.

My Review: I was weary of this book at first cause the cover didn't grab my attention but after reading a few pages I was hooked. It speeds up real fast with action. Kyra, who is a guarded teenage, due to being abononed by her mother at a young age, has been through lots of hardships bouncing from foster homes. Its very interesting seeing the book narrated from Kyra's perspective cause she is such a strong character.

The action in this book was great! The entire book is about angels and the different rankings of the angels. You could also tell that the authors put a ton of effort and research into this book. It was awesome reading this and also gaining some knowledge. Nicely done perspective on angels.

This book is also full of mystery. Mystery surrounds the towns people and the town which makes this book full of suspense to where you dont want to put it down and you just have to keep reading to find what happens next.

Kyra and Asher(Kyra's guardian angel) have a rocky start to their relationship but she eventually warms up to him and starts having serious feelings for him and falls for him, as he does for her. Ethan, Kyra's other guardian angel has feeling for her also but Kyra doesn't know it yet. So this makes for a love triangle between them all.

The only thing about this book is that when Kyra goes into her dreams it hard. You cant tell if she is dreaming or actually awake and its hard to follow between dream and reality. Other then that this book was fantastic and a great read! Great story and ending and I cant wait to see/read the next book!

Angel books have taken the reading world by storm lately. I haven't been a part of that at all. The Dawn of Angels is my first angel book, and I am so happy that I decided to get into the angel craze. The Dawn of Angels was such an amazing book.

I love Kyra so much! She is such a strong girl and she really didn't take any crap from anyone. Her back story is really sad but watching her start to come to terms with her past was one of my favorite parts in this book. With Ashur's help she began to see that hope was still alive in the world. The authors did such an amazing job showing readers Kyra's emotional struggles.

When Ashur falls from Heaven to save Kyra I could tell there was more to that story. Their relationship is a little rocky, and Kyra really struggles to trust Ashur but I will be very interested in reading how their relationship grows in the next book. Ashur is strong and wants nothing more than to save Kyra and then continue to keep her safe. I know he's a guardian angel but still, he didn't have to fall for her.

There were so many colorful characters in this book! Ethan is a character that I cannot wait to learn more about. He also wants to protect Kyra, and he is willing to do anything to accomplish that. The shop keeper was actually a bit of a shock to me. He kept me guessing through the book, and last part with him threw me for a loop. Kyra's foster parents and Liv were explained well and had depth. I especially felt for Liv in this book.

I would say more but I don't want to spoil this book for someone else. I was pulled in right from the start and I didn't want to stop reading it. Now I am just waiting for the next book, so I can find out what happens.

This book was a slooooooow read. I had a very hard time getting into this book - I only started to get somewhat engaged in the story when Kyra learns more about what side people are on - about 160 pages into it. I also had a very hard time liking Kyra. She starts out an angry person because of her mother leaving her (which I understand), then seems to transform a little by being in this weird town. I just couldn't pin her down, and the way she was written didn't make her a likeable person. I did have a few times when I could relate to her and her feelings toward God and religion, but for the most part, I just didn't understand her or like her.

It was also a little hard to follow where Kyra's role was in all of this and why the other side chose to strike when they did and not at a different time. Maybe I missed something.

Ashur I didn't get at all either. He fell as an angel for her? He seemed he didn't give a good reason to. They have this (what felt like) instant love thing going on and it wasn't working at all for me since it seemed like it had only been a few days.

I did like some of the lines in the book particularly "With every wrongful act there is a chance for a stronger sense of love, one cannot be experiences otherwise. There is a chance for mercy-for forgiveness."

In the end, I had to give this book 2 stars. However, I'm sure some fans of YA will enjoy this book.

When I first started reading Dawn of Angels I did think Kyra was just a bad kid who was rebelling because of the way life had panned out for her.
Which I think she was, She thought her own mother didn’t love her as she was put into foster care. Her foster brother got a little fresh with her and it ended with her hitting him with a baseball bat. Who wouldn’t rebel and hate the world if you had an upbringing like Kyra?

Being told she would be found one last foster home and to make a go of it unless she wants to go to Juvenile Detention she was taken to a small town where her new foster parents awaited her.
Jeff and Justine, They were a little weird to be honest, church goers and proper, not like Kyra at all, But she tried her very best to make it work with them.

I did grow to love Kyra’s character she was hard on the outside but she did care really she had just built walls up to stop herself getting hurt.

The book was crammed with danger, betrayal, secrets ,love and friendship which all unfolds really well as the story goes on.
I must admit the first few pages of reading the book was a bit slow and I was dubious that it would be slow book however I am happy to say that carrying on after those few pages and I was drawn into it.

The details in the book were well described which made me imagining this small town, the houses, Kyra and the other characters in the book, very easy.

Kyra's mother gave her up when she was younger and she has spent the majority of her life bitter, angry and fighting for her life. Now, her new foster parents stand between her and jail time, so she has to make it work this time. Try as she might trouble just seems to follow her everywhere but this time it is more sinister and dangerous than ever before, and Kyra left with only the necklace her mother gave her with someone's hair inside and the cryptic message to not trust anyone...must find a way to do just that. This story has loads going on, from angels to demons and some really weird clay creatures. Not one person is what they seem, especially Kyra as it all comes back to her and why does hell literally break loose when she settles into her new foster home. Her foster parents Justine and Jeff...well basically the whole town is strange, sort of cult like, and the fellas of interest Ethan is okay but Ashur is descriptively beautiful in every way. Lastly, the main character Kyra is mostly angry and distrustful of the very people that she should trust, and that comes from her insecurity and hurt from a mother she feels abandoned her, but will she ever see the truth that lies within her and learn to trust herself? I think this is an interesting story that has potential, and I look forward to seeing how things flesh out in the next book. Overall, it was an okay read.

This was the very first novel I read on my new Kindle--so that was really fun! This was a very interesting and unusual YA novel. The young heroine is a teen girl named Kyra. She is a very well developed character. I thought the author did an excellent job of capturing her angst, sarcasm, humor and pain. I loved her! I loved the beginning chapters of the novel and felt really pulled in by the story.

The story had so many twists and turns, and unexpected events. It really went a different direction than I expected, which is a surprising and fun thing in a YA novel.
The ending was not what I expected. The paranormal/fantasy elements were a bit much for me at times, but that was probably just a personal taste thing.

I would have loved to have seen the romance, some of the bad guys, and the overall conflict a bit more fleshed out. For me, it almost moved at too quick of a pace. But, I think teen readers will love that aspect. Overall, I would rate the novel at about 3.5 stars, I bumped it up for a very strong and engaging storyline, beginning pull and originality of the story. Enjoyable and recommended book!

This was fun to read. The best thing about it was the setting. There is a rich atmosphere which really helps bring the reader into the protagonist’s world. All the side characters, with their quirks, add to this by providing background “noise”. There’s quite a bit of mythology in the book, which, for me, was very interesting and which added another level to the basic storyline.
I did not, however, enjoy the plot’s love aspect. This is yet another book in which the main characters fall head over heels in love in two seconds flat, and that doesn’t work for me. It hurts the plot and makes the whole thing less believable. But actually, the pacing in the whole book, not just the romance, was too fast. There were many times where I found myself wishing for a bit more writing, more filling out of chapters and scenes.
Perhaps young adult readers will enjoy this more than I did, but I cannot recommend it as highly as I would have liked.

I really liked this book. Within the first few pages my interest was peaked as i read about the "social workers," being as i am a social worker. I read on with a smirk and discovered I liked the main character immediately.
This story is more than just an angel paranormal story and takes on a depth of understanding I did not see coming.
