Winnie the Witch #2

Winnie in Winter

Rate this book
Winnie the Witch and Wilbur, her cat, are both tired of winter. The garden is covered in snow, the pond is covered in ice, icicles hang from the rooftop. Wilbur's feet are wet and his whiskers are frozen. So, Winnie casts a spell from her big book of spells and turns everything into summer.
But that's her big mistake.... All over the garden little animals wake up and flowers begin to grow. Crowds of people arrive to enjoy the sunshine, and soon there is no room for Winnie and Wilbur in the garden. So out on the porch, with an imperious stomp, Winnie shuts her eyes, waves her wand five
times, and shouts ABRACADABRA! As the sun disappears and the snow begins to fall, Winnie and Wilbur go back inside, having decided that "Winter is lovely too."
The award-winning team of Korky Paul and Valerie Thomas has delivered a delightful and witty tale that is sure to be a child's favorite.

Winnie, that quirky witch whose story began in the eponymous Winnie the Witch , returns in this delightful sequel, surveying the wintry world outside her window with distinct displeasure. Deciding that she is 'tired' of winter - a sentiment shared by her cat Wilbur, whose feet are wet, and whiskers are frozen - she casts a spell that transforms her garden into a sunny summer paradise. Unfortunately, she isn't the only one with the midwinter blues, and her garden is soon invaded by hordes of sun-hungry people, trampling her grass, and bathing in her fountain. What can Winnie do to get rid of them...?

Although only the second in Valerie Thomas and Korky Pauk's picture-book series devoted to the humorous adventures of Winnie the Witch - Winnie the Witch , first published in 1987, was the first, and close to ten years would elapse before the author/illustrator team revisited the character - Winnie in Winter is the fourth Winnie title I have read, following upon the initial book, as well as Winnie Flies Again , and Winnie's Midnight Dragon . This is owing largely to the fact that these three books are the only ones in the series, currently comprising eleven titles (not including the related chapter-books, authored by someone else), to be published here in the states, something I find very frustrating, as these are wonderfully witchy stories. I ordered my copy of this one from the UK, and am not sorry I did! The story is engaging, full of both witchy and seasonal appeal (who hasn't wished that winter would end?), and the artwork gorgeously detailed, full of those humorous flourishes I have come to expect from Pauls work. All in all, Winnie in Winter is one that witchy book-lovers will not want to miss!

Winnie's gothic style mansion has icicles hanging all over it, her garden is covered with snow and her pond is frozen over; she hates winter. Her cat Wilbur, feet wet and whiskers frozen also hates winter.

So Winnie decides that she will do something about it so she looks in her book of spells and comes up with something. She puts on her woolly coat, fluffy hat, snow boots, scarf and gloves and goes outside, followed by Wilbur who suspects that something is about to happen.

And it does. Winnie waves her magic wand shouts Abracadabra and suddenly the winter landscape is turned into a summer one with sunshine and blue sky. Winnie gets out her deckchair, doffs her winter clothing and sits in the sun with a delighted, and warm, Wilbur at her feet.

But she does not expect hordes of people to arrive to share it with her. But they do. And as they frolic in the garden, Winnie is aghast. There is no room for Winnie and Wilbur as all the people enjoy themselves in the garden and then the situation worsens when an ice-cream seller arrives in his van!

Winnie has had enough. She gets out her wand, shouts Abracadabra and the sun disappears along with the blue sky and the snow begins to fall. Everyone dressed in their summer best very quickly depart. Winnie is happy, she goes back into her house and says to Wilbur, 'This is warm and cosy' and she decides that winter is a lovely season!

Pure magic once more from the intrepid duo of Winnie and Wilbur with the fantastic illustrations by Korky Paul to augment the text.

This is my review of ‘Whinnie in winter’. I actually remember reading Winnie books in primary school myself, hence why I have chosen to review this book. If I remember correctly as a child when reading Winnie books I was fascinated by illustrations. This made me want to read the book further, having read the books as an adult; I am still finding the pictures fascinating particularly some of the details like her nose and legs. The book is about winter. Winne and her cat are fed up of winter, she waves her magic wand and suddenly the sun is shining. She is about to enjoy a relaxing time in the garden when a big stampede of people arrive in her garden to enjoy the sunshine too. Soon there are too many people in the garden that there isn’t any space for Winnie and her cat. She reverses the magic and enjoys a hot chocolate in winter with her cat.

Winnie is a witch and she has a lovely black cat named Wilbur. Winnie is not happy with having to wear all her winter gear so she performs a little magic. She finds that her magic solution was more trouble than it was worth. I loved the illustrations. They were excellent. Winnie was a funny looking witch!
