When Farts Had Colors

Rate this book
When Farts Had Colors is the story of 4th grader Lance Chance who hates Mondays. This particular Monday Lance's mom coaxes Lance to school with his favorite sandwiches and a 'wish-kiss'. On his way to school Lance is tormented by "the biggest, meanest 4th grader ever to stalk the halls of Alfonso Orr Elementary School. Merry Maddox. Bully Extraordinaire…”A legend" and her posse of mayhem, the Crazy M&Ms. If having to hand over his sandwiches and perform a certain humiliating act wasn't enough, Lance gets blamed by Merry Maddox for letting out a fart so horrible it forces the entire school to evacuate. Lance runs away from school and wishes that farts had colors. "Then everyone would have known it was Merry Maddox who sent out those heat seeking missiles of doom and destruction," thinks Lance. And just like that, Lance's wish comes true. Will Lance come up with a plan to expose Merry Maddox and reveal her true colors?

Okay so you are probably asking why am I reviewing a book call When Farts Had colors. Well it is all because of my nephews. Both of my nephews ages 18 and 11 where bullied in school. Most recently the 11 year old. They were affected by this like all kids who are bullied. Me and there mother (my sister) did what we could to fix the issues, which were to pull them from public schools. My oldest nephew is thriving now. he is in college and majoring in computer engineering. Woohoo!! The youngest he is trying to move past it. Unlike his brother though, his bullying was physical, a couple of kids tried to beat him up. So when I saw this book I thought that it is perfect for him to read. Too bad we don't live in a world where kids were not bullied. If I had a wish kiss like Lance had I would wish for a bully free world.

On to the book review, I really enjoyed it. Yes I read the book. It did have some cute funny parts. I may be a female but I laugh at fart jokes too and I was laughing my head off. So in this book we have Lance Chance who is bullied by Merry Maddox and her crew Fred and Ted. They are also known as the crazy M&M's, I think because they are always eating M&M's. Lance is also lactose intolerant and his mom doesn't help the situation by feeding him cheese and milk. This results in Lance occasionally passing gas. Well on Monday Lance leaves for school after he gets his wish kiss from his mom. She says that he is allowed to get one wish that day. Once at school Merry and her crew bullies and harasses Lance. The get Lance in trouble when Merry breaks wind and it smells so bad that the teacher pulls the fire alarm and then passes out. Merry blames it all on Lance and he is so embarrassed that he leaves school and hides at a neighbor's house. While hiding he makes his wish and wishes that farts had colors. Wouldn't you know it, everyone now farts in color. It ends up giving Lance an idea on how to get Merry in trouble. Lance does and saves the day.

I thought that this was a cute story that teaches kids about bullying. I know that the story is extravagant but it shows that you don't have to stoop to their level to prevail in the end. The author does a great job in writing a child's level but also making it where an adult can read it with the child. He also talks about bullying in the end of the book and talks about how to stop it in ways like telling and adult and such.

I think that the way the author perceives adults is accurate in a child's eyes. We sometimes can be oblivious to what can be going on and not see what is really there.

Overall:

Get this book. Rather or not you have a child that is bullied, they should read it. I recommend reading it with them and talking about bullying. You would be surprised by what they tell you. It is a cute, fun story and I think the author did a great job.

Cute story. Wrongly blamed for passing silent but deadly gassss, our young hero uses his wish-kiss to have each person's flatulence identifiable by color.

Even his mother's friends and their neighbors experience his wish come true is humorous.

But it enables him to lay a trap and catch the bully and her gang.

I like the possibilities of "WISH-KISSES" more than colors for gas.

How do you handle a bully? Do you run? Do you stand up to them? Lance Chance was tired of being bullied by Merry Maddox but what could he do? He solved his bullying problem and so can you. The end of this book has helpful hints on how to recognize a bully, how to handle bullying and always to tell an adult.

I will freely admit when I saw this title I laughed out loud and decided to explore it a little further (hey, I'm a guy!). Seeing as how it was a free offer that day in the Amazon Kindle store I got it and checked it out and, after reading it, I had my 4th grader read it and discussed it with my 4th grader upon completion - he enjoyed it, also.

Mark Thomas does a good job of explaining bullying in school in a very humorous way, and explaining it the way he does also encourages our younger generation to read - in my case, my 4th grader didn't want to stop reading it, laughed a few times while he was reading, and before the conclusion he had a better reinforcement of not being a bully and recognizing the same.

Most parents struggle with finding something that a child will enjoy reading - I'd recommend this for the entertainment factor as well as the education factor. As I type this review, I see the Kindle pricing is $2.99 - I believe it is well worth it and recommend it

My kids loved this book, they thought it was hilarious. I could have done without the fart references, which made up the whole book. It was a short read, I read it in its entirely before they went to bed. My favorite part of the book was the last chapter on how to deal with being a bully. It had some really good advise in it.

A cute and fun kids' book that I HAD to read because of the title. Who hasn't wished that farts had colors so everyone would know who REALLY "dealt it"? It has an anti-bullying message also that isn't "in your face" nor preachy. I definitely will read this to the grandkids!

This a delightful grade school book that I got free from Kindle (I couldn't resist the title!). At its core, it is about bullying and even has a special section at the end about dealing with bullies. The story itself is sweet and funny and should amuse grade schoolers and even middle-schoolers.

Super cute children's book that addresses not only what causes this natural function of the body, but it has a great section on bullies: how you know if you are being bullied, how you should handle it, and how to avoid it.
