The Ring (Manga) #2

Ring: O Chamado 2

Rate this book
The fabulously creepy story of The Ring takes a side step from the plot of the original Japanese film, taking the reader into life after all of that tragedy and mystery. And guess what? Sadako, the psychic killer from the bottom of the well, isn't so easily disposed of. Drafted wonderfully by the adept manga artist Meimu, Ring 2 takes the reader into the life of Mai Takano, after her beloved Professor Ryuji is killed by Sadako. Adding to the sci-fi element, both Mai and little Yoichi, son of Ryuji and Reiko, have developed psychic powers of their own and are often haunted by the powerful Sadako. Ring 2 takes on the kind of sci- fi action and horror reminiscent of Steven Spielberg's Poltergeist, and gives it a fascinating scientific bend.

The Ring has become a worldwide media sensation, having been adapted from its original novel series in Japan into movies, television, and manga. If you've seen the films, you know the creepy horror of The Ring.

I really hate giving such a low rating but this just wasn’t up to par with the first one-which I really enjoyed. The artwork was really odd and so different from the first book that I didn’t even recognize the central characters. I will give the third book a solid chance though as I bought the entire series.

At times it was hard to follow, the art style is very different from the first volume, and not scary.

Weird and kind of freaky. It was different from the first volume and started off with a recap which includes different details from volume one; also the art was in a different style. But I actually kind of liked it, even though it was something kind of different from the first one.

The art is goofy as hell, especially the “scary” scenes. I had forgotten how rushed/confusing this one is 😬

The way I'm mad at whoever destroyed the previous characters physiognomy you have no idea.
Considering there is a big part part of the previous installment of the series in here to connect the two stories, I had no idea who those people were till they either called each other with names or I was connecting the previous story to the new character's faces. This drove me insane till half of the book.

Then it finally started the new part of the story and that's when things got interesting and spooky.
The horror parts were done very well and the story felt both nostalgic yet new.
My inner The Ring fangirl was excited while reading this, so despite the beginning problems, the story does get better in the main sequel part.

This one's a strange one as I don't like the movie it's based on, in saying that there isn't really much different from the film other that it's more streamlined. I just finished it and felt a weird sense of satisfaction, maybe it's because there is no stupid clayfaced Sadako.

The first 150 pages are a recap of the 1st one, which is a shame but since the art is so drastically different it helps you figure out who is who. An example of this is a report in the previous one was blonde short hair in this they have medium black hair. It's like that for everyone but you could read this by itself without having to read the first volume.

Apart from the art, there was also a change in Sadako's origin and the video, which makes it fall inline with the movie such as the phone call instead of the text at the end of the video.

The story follows the professors student, she is thrown in the deep end when she finds his corpse. From there it's entangled with the mothers about trying to save the boy and stopping Sadako for good.

The story follows Mai who is Ryuji student, she stumbles across his corpse. From there is becomes curious as to why he has died and starts to investigate it herself. She comes across Yoichi (Reiko's son) who might still be cursed, they decided to try and put a stop to it once and for all.

I was disappointed with the manga version of the Ring, but it's a masterpiece compared to this. This one follows the plot of the movie Ring 2, but its extremely disjointed so if you are unfamiliar with the movie this manga version makes no sense whatsoever. The other thing about this one is the awful artwork - really did not work for me at all and completely changes the look of characters from The Ring - so if you read these back to back, it becomes even more confusing.

About the only positive thing I can say about this one is the ending and a couple of bits of text/dialogue. I love the idea that "the dead are inside that ring of time from which they can never escape" and "only those that stay in the ring of time are dead" - The idea of a ring of time adds another dimension to the Ring metaphor which I thought worked rather nicely - otherwise... meh.

Not as good as the first one. The problem isn't the story itself but the disjointed rushed way it is laid out. The first half is like a "previously seen on" recap of the first book and after you get through that part, it still seems rushed. It's worth reading if you're a fan of The Ring/Ringu series but if you were to pick this up at random without knowing anything about the backstory, it would just be confusing.

I genuinely enjoyed Ring 1 but unfortunately not this one. The art here is indeed very odd (different artist) and the storytelling is all over the place... Most of the time I couldn't even understand what was going on, like there were missing panels or something. I had also difficult to tell the characters apart.

The first chunk of this volume is a retread of the events of the first, but it was overall a very solid, enjoyable read, and I appreciated getting the additional follow-up of what happens to Yoichi and Mai after the events of the first volume.

3.1/5

A continuation of the first volume, this one takes some interesting turns, making Yoichi a latent psychic just like his father was apparently. Scientists and law enforcement are looking to exploit that, and Sadako, the cursed girl who created the equally cursed videotape, wants to use him as a vessel to transport herself back into the real world.

So basically Freddy's Revenge, but with ghosts instead of dream demons.

The artwork, this time by Meimu, is an improvement over the first volume's art by Misao Inagaki, although still quite flawed. Sometimes the characters' heads look like lopsided additions to their shoulders, for instance, but hey, at least the style is more gothic and fitting this time around.

A lack of consistency with the character designs bothered me for a bit; Ryuji's character design, for instance, suffers the most in these volumes. In the first, he's clean-shaven with long hair. In this one, he's got long hair, but has grown a beard. In the third one, he's got a more trimmed beard, but short hair. GAH.

Despite its flaws, this one is a fitting end to the main story. The rest are pretty much filler, so if all you wanted was the actual story, you may as well stop here.

Don't compare this to the movie. If you do so, you aren't going to enjoy this.

They are trying to figure out what the hell is going on. People are dying and the video is still making its rounds. Yoichi is trapped by the darkness and trying to make it stop. Takano is having visions of Sadako. Will Sadako be stopped? The darkness will take over.

This is so much better than the first. Creepier and more twisted.

A gift from my girlfriend 🥰

I like the 90s urban setting, similar to the original film. I'm not familiar with what happens in all the Ring sequels, so this as a standalone epilogue to the film was an interesting read, especially since that ended on cliff-hanger (a perfect one, if you were to ask me).

Whereas the film is grounded in realism, this goes full Inception for its dramatic moments (or a more appropriate equivalent would be Paprika).

I think this was based on the Japanese movie, which was not based on the sequel to the Japanese book, so not great.

I didn't enjoy this one as much as the first. This one had better illustrations but the story itself felt really disjointed. I'm finished it and I can't really tell you what happened...
