Was holding off on reviewing this until my boyfriend got a chance to read it, and he just finished yesterday, soooo.....
Basically, I thought the book was okay overall. Definitely nowhere NEAR as great as the first, but then, that was to be expected. That first book set the bar very, very, VERY high...I just knew the second wouldn't be able to compete, and when I found out this one would be focusing more on Sunny, I figured that even more so, and after reading the book, that sure enough seemed to be the case.
First off, the book was pretty slow overall to me. Most of it I thought was kinda slow, with maybe the last third or so of the book being the most interesting and quicker-paced, in my opinion. I think that's another thing, though, that the first book set my expectation high on: the pace. With the first one, it seemed like there was ALWAYS a bunch of different things going on constantly -- a bunch of very different new things going on constantly -- and the storylines just seemed to move very quickly and were exTREMEly engaging the whole way through, very easily making the book a page-turner. This one, however, wasn't a page-turner for me. I wasn't too thrilled to continue reading every time I returned to the book.
Without getting into too much detail, I for the most part liked what was done with the Sheldon character, I liked Jada's and Born's storyline although I wasn't as crazy about Jada in this book, I thought Sunny's storyline was ok (as I figured it'd be before I even began reading), and the introduction to Malcolm was pretty straight, although I'd gotten a lil' tired of them after a while. I've read a few different reviews that have mentioned that some of the characters in this book are from some of Tracy Brown's other books - folks like Olivia, Zion, and some other people. That makes a lot more sense, and I think if I'd read some of her other books (I did read half of one other one -- Twisted -- but I can't remember the character names), I'd probably have a much greater appreciation for her incorporating these already well-established characters into this series.
We get some more insight into Dorian and Sunny's relationship and how they started, which was really cool -- I really liked that. I also loved Mercedes' and Sheldon's relationship and Mercedes' feistiness and realness like her mother. Lastly, I noticed how almost all of the kids (I think except for DJ) -- Mercedes, Sheldon, Ethan, Adiva, Chance, etc. -- are around the same age, and I couldn't help but wonder if this is because Tracy's laying down the foundation for stories/books in the future involving that generation. Seems quite probable!

Anywho, on a final and separate note...so, if White Lines 1 & 2 are ever converted into movie form, here is my suggested (strongly urged) cast:
Sunny - LisaRaye ...all day every day - that is LisaRaye! Although I know she doesn't have the greatest acting abilities, she isn't a NYer and she's quite a bit older than especially Sunny in the first one..but I honestly can't imagine anyone else in this role...honestly.
Jada - Jada Pinkett . I think there could probably be someone else who could also fit this role, but this is the main person who's come to mind since I started the first book. Like LisaRaye, though, she also kinda has age against her when it comes to this role. But that aside, I think she could do it! OH, I just had a revelation!! EVA PIGFORD! Yes, I think that's my new Jada - she'd be great.
Ava - Definitely Lauren London . By the way Ava is described, the way she seems to carry herself, and so on, I can't really imagine anyone else in this role. I'm not as married to Lauren as Ava as I am LisaRaye as Sunny, but I think she'd really be a good fit for it.
Born - I don't know why, but it's been REALLY hard, even from the first book, for me to think of someone who could play Born. I've mostly thought of Omar Epps, but I honestly don't think he's quite right. Nor Mekhi Phifer. The actor would have to be a cross between Omar and Mekhi honestly. Jury's still out on who'd be able to play Born. Honestly, the closest match I can think of might be Darrin Dewitt Henson ("Lem" on the Soul Food series)..although he seems like he's a lil' on the short side, and I've always imagined Born as someone with a very "big" presence, including his height.
Dorian - I've long thought that Samuel L. Jackson might be a good fit, but one person my boyfriend mentioned that I think might be even BETTER is Billy Dee Williams ...but of course, Billy Dee is much older than this role would need, so...in terms of age, don't think it'd work. But as for man to man, I could see Billy Dee doing Dorian. I've also thought of Blair Underwood , although I also see Blair as Malcolm, and that brings me to...
Malcolm - While reading the book, I always imagined Lamman Rucker as Malcolm. But as previously mentioned, I think Blair Underwood would also be a good fit. Oh, and the actor who actually plays a role of the same name ("Malcolm") on the BET show Single Ladies -- D.B. Woodside -- I can also see in this role. And in fact, on Single Ladies, that "Malcolm" is in a relationship with "Keisha", the character played by LisaRaye, so that'd work out perfectly!
Olivia - Vivica Fox or Holly Robinson-Peete . Hehe..
Zion - I think this role could be played by Mekhi Phifer .
Born's dad - another, maybe even stronger possibility for Samuel L. Jackson , I believe.
Miss Ingrid - Adrienne-Joi Johnson , the lady who played Jody's mother in Baby Boy. This is the main person I've thought of in this role, but there are certain things about Miss Ingrid that make me think she might be a bit older. Nevertheless, A.J. Johnson's the only one who comes to mind so far!
Anywho, I think that's it for now.

" White Lines 2: Sunny" by Tracy Brown has been a long time coming. When I first read " White Lines", I was immediately drawn to the characters. They had such raw emotions.I loved the chemistry shared between Born and Jada. I was rooting for them to succeed in both their relationship as well as their personal endeavors. Fast forward nearly four and a half years later and the characters I grew to love have changed. When I first heard that " White Lines 2" was going to focus around Sunny, I was thrilled. I love when a sequel can focus on the other characters in a book. Instead, I was disappointed.
" White Lines 2" picks up years after the events of part one. The characters are pushing into their forties and all have families now. The story focuses on Sunny, who still dealing with the death of her beloved Dorrian, begins to chase those lines again. Jada is a shell of her former self. Instead of the driven, fighter she was in part one, she is weak and carries the weight of the world on her shoulders in every scene about her. Born.... was nothing like his former self. There was nothing that made me feel attached to these characters. I did enjoy the Sheldon storyline however. I also enjoyed characters from " Criminal Minded" being included. I hope part 3 brings everything together. 3 stars

I was happy this book wasn't entirely Sunny's story because I really wanted to know what went down with Jada and Born after the storm. These two are my favorite, and as usual they have quite a bit of obstacles to overcome. It'll be interesting to read how their saga ends. Ava really surprised me in this book. Her actions have been a bit loopy, and I am wondering where her storyline will go. Sunny was off the chain as usual. This woman is a hot mess. You'd think now that she is in her 40s she would calm down but that just wasn't the case. She is definitely wild as ever. I thought Malcolm would tame her, but I really thought wrong. I am dissapointed that this one just ended so abruptly. There is absolutely no closure. What happens with Jada, Born, and Sheldon? Sunny and Malcolm are in a real mess, Ava is also a mess, and what is going on with Olivia. I'm hoping there is part 3 to this story and it comes sooner than 5yrs because a lot of questions are left unanswered.

I really enjoyed Sunni’s story! But she did that to herself! Poor Mercedes is all I can say. But that damn Sheldon is something else with his self. He really needs some professional help. I missed the part where Olivia and Ava became friends but I’ve never trust Ava since she had eyes for Born. But the ending!!!!! Sunni now you know BETTER!! Then for homeboy to just leave like that was top tier!! Cause who?!!!!

White Lines II begins a few years after the first one left off. I admits that I had to go back and skim WL, because it had been so long ( 5 years!) since I read the original but in the sequel, Sunny is enjoying life a wife and mother but yet still grieving the loss of her beloved Dorian. She’s come a long way since giving up her addiction a few years ago and aided by 2 stints in rehab is doing good. Except she sometimes misses her old life- the parties, the glitz and glamour and on a trip for her latest business venture, she finds what she has been missing both in her love life and in her “secret”. As she struggles to maintain both, she ends up risking everything.
While the book mainly focuses on Sunny, we are also reintroduced to Jada ( my favorite character) who is trying to re-kindle her relationship with Born despite their past and raise her son Sheldon who is fighting his own set of demons. There are some other minor characters- Jada’s sister Ava, Olivia and Zion, whom I gather are from her other books. As Sunny fight her growing dependence on her old friend, Jada struggles with her own demons regarding her child, his father and her actions while pregnant.
I realize this book was about Sunny and while I enjoyed her perspective, I have to say that I found Jada’s storyline much more interesting and almost wish this was focused just on her.
This book ends in the ultimate cliffhanger and after seeing that this was just recently published, I hope we don’t have to wait too long for the sequel because I am dying to know what happens next.
This book was as gritty or as real to me as WLI ones, there was lots of references to designer clothing and cars that I don’t remember from the first one but that seems to be a staple in Urban fiction which I honestly find annoying to describe every outfit complete with what designers- Chanel dress, Loubotioun shoes). Aside from ( Which I guess is part of this genre), that I enjoyed this book almost as much as the original but it seemed lacking in character development in some areas- for instance- Ava just seemed to be thrown in there for good measure at times- there wasn’t much character development going on there.
Overall, I enjoyed this book. It doesn’t live up to White Lines in my book, buts its solid on its own and I definitely wasn’t disappointed.

Wasnt impressed at all..this book seemed to drag on and on..the ending was typical..and it left you hanging abt zion and ava and born and jada..Sunnys story was boring

*Sigh* where to start? While browsing for WL1, i saw this and immediately got excited. I didnt know there was a part 2. I waited to buy this as i wanted to re-read WL1 again and i knew if i bought them together i would read this 1 first. I was so excited to read this as i wondered in my head what happened with my beloved Jada and Born. I really wasnt interested in Sunny's life.
The book seemed to not have as much "mmph" as the 1st book. It starts off ok, with Sunny doing her thing. The disappointment starts when we get to the dinner for Jada's birthday. I was expecting Jada and Born to be living the "happily ever after" life. Meaning they were married and had at least had a baby to connect their families together. But to my surprise Born is just now proposing. The next thing is that the ages are off. This really ticked me off. WL1 ends with the year being 2007. WL2 picks up in 2009. That's only 2 years time difference. However, in two years the characters age at least 6-8 years. Jada is said to be turning 39, but in WL1 in the year 2007, she was turning 32. Sunny is 42 but she was 4 years older than Jada. Jada shouldve been turning 35. Mercedes and Sheldon were the correct ages. But DJ shouldve only been 18 since he was 4 or 5 when Mercedes was born. Missing little details like this bother me and it shows me how little the author paid attention to details in her 1st book.
I found Sunny's story to be boring. I really didnt care about what she had been doing. I was interested to see how her relationship with Mercedes was. Only toward the end, did her story start to pick up.
At first i didnt like how Sheldon was made to be in this book. I was mad that he was trying to hurt his mother, and was jealous of Born and Ethan. But then it dawned on me that he truly was his father's child. That his jealousy and hatred for his mother and soon to be step brother paralleled that of his own dad hatred for the same thing. Part of me though, wishes he wouldve passed on, so that his mother could finally have happiness in her life.
Overall the book was ok. I felt as though the author rushed through it instead of taking her time. I mean, it did take 5 years for this one to come out and it was only half the size of WL1. It started new stories for characters, and we are left to wonder what happens with them. Everything in this book couldve been at the end of WL1 and this couldve picked up where the book ends. Hopefully with WL3, the author will take her time and cover EVERYTHING so we arent left with questions as to what happens to this person or that person. I wouldnt mind a 1000+ page book.

As the sequel to White Lines, which is an amazing book, I had high expectations for this novel and was a tad bit disappointed after reading it. This book focuses more on the life of Sunny Cruz and less on her best friend Jada Ford. Ever since I read White Lines, I've always been interested in the mystery of Sunny's life, specifically her relationship with Dorian and was excited when I began reading the sequel. White Lines leaves off with Sunny still grieving the death of Dorian and having to raise her daughter, Mercedes, by herself.
White Lines II starts off the same way, but takes place several years after Dorian's death. By this time, Jada has already reconciled with her old lover, Born, and the two of them live together with Jada's son, Sheldon. Furthermore, Sunny and Jada are well known for the book they wrote together about their experiences in the New York drug scene, from being crack addicts to being proud parents. All seems well in both Jada and Sunny's lives, but things between to take a turn for the worse. With Jada, it is coping with her son's behavior, and as for Sunny, it is dealing with Dorian's death as well as her recurring addiction to crack cocaine and falling in love again.
Although Tracy Brown had a great plot line for Sunny, I wish she still went into more detail with Sunny's life. There were quick stories about Sunny's past and how she met Dorian, but there were not enough to make the book be focused on her life. Sunny is so damn dumb why would u do this go back to getting high and for her daughter to say at least u didn't smoke crack like that's any better hell naw I loved the first book but this one was ok I felt bad that I was hoping Sheldon died.

Sunny, girl ….. WHAT THE F***?????? Sunny’s story was interesting… Yes book II was just as good as book I and I’ll be moving on to book III asap.

This was good but not as good as book one (a tough act to follow). I enjoy all the characters but think the book is best when following Jada, Born, and Sheldon.

So this book picks up years after the first one ends.
We find that Sunny is actually living the life she has always dreamed of. However, she still is not happy. She is 40 years old and still trying to live life like she is a young socialite. However, just as the book is titled, those "White Lines" come back and mess Sunny up. After years of being clean, she loses the battle and starts snorting again.
Now let me move on to Jada. I am so proud of Jada for not going back to those "White Lines", however she is facing other problems. She keeps allowing her past to interfere with her present. It doesn't help that her son is slowly becoming a psychopath . . . It seems like no one can get through to Sheldon, but Mercedes (Sunny's daughter). She is just like her mother, straight forward and to the point. I did feel for sorry for Sheldon for not knowing anything about his father and just wished that he could have seen Born as a father figure to him since that is one of the only males that have been constant in his life since Born and Jada's reconnection. I hate the predicament she and Born was placed in and just wish that for once they could have their happily ever after.
Overall, this book was everything I expected it to be!!!

However, just as the book is titled, those "White Lines" come back and mess Sunny up. After years of being clean, she loses the battle and starts snorting again.
Now let me move on to Jada. I am so proud of Jada for not going back to those "White Lines", however she is facing other problems. She keeps allowing her past to interfere with her present. It doesn't help that her son is slowly becoming a psychopath . . . It seems like no one can get through to Sheldon, but Mercedes (Sunny's daughter). She is just like her mother, straight forward and to the point. I did feel for sorry for Sheldon for not knowing anything about his father and just wished that he could have seen Born as a father figure to him since that is one of the only males that have been constant in his life since Born and Jada's reconnection. I hate the predicament she and Born was placed in and just wish that for once they could have their happily ever after.
Overall, this book was everything I expected it to be!!!

Going into this book, I kept in mind that many people didn't care for it; but I absolutely loved this book because it showed us that Sunny was battling demons that some of us know nothing about. It's important to know that relapse is a part of recovery and this was evident in this book. I applaud @authortracybrown for addressing this issue and I proudly give her 💎💎💎💎💎.

White Lines II ...this book had me excited when I got it because of course the first one was definitely a page turner. However, I was a bit annoyed in this sequel but with that being said I do hope there will be a next one to finally give closure. -sigh- I definitely did not like the ending of this book, I couldn't believe Jada and Born don't actually get married I was hoping this book ended with their wedding -- Anyway Sunny goes right back into those white lines that she loves so much and it ended up messing up her life in the end even though she thought she was doing a good job at keeping it a secret. Shit hit the fan quick with Malcolm at the airport. I was mad because I thought Sunny had a second chance at love only to let those white lines come between them. Sad.

3.5 Don't let the rating fool you. If you ever intend to get to the third installment, this one is absolutely necessary. And you WANT to get to the third installment.
So this was mostly about Sunny which at first I didn't like because to me, it didn't seem congruent with the first installment. Because let's be real, we like Sunny, but we fell in love with Jada and Born. They are in this second installment along with other characters that Brown adds. I did like the blossoming story of Zion, Olivia and Ava but Frankie, Jillian etc was somewhat awkward because there was no real attachment for me. But Sunny deserves this spotlight in order for us to get to 3. So be patient because Brown writes slow and deliberate.

Just got done reading White Lines written by Tracy Brown it was good but it wasn't as good as the first book. First off in the first book Born and Jada relationship was so cute this book it was like it was forced. I thought it was cute when Born proposed but I just wasn't feeling their relationship I don't think thats where Born wanted to be. But Seldon and Mercedes relationship was so cute I love their relationship. I would liked to hear more about Zion and jada sister . Tracy Brown left so much stuff out. I wonder is it going to be a part 3.

Dang Sunny. I was really hoping Sunny would be able to stay away but her addiction is too strong. I loved getting into Sunny’s head in this book; it shows that sometimes having everything isn’t enough. Jada is going through it with Sheldon, Sheldon is going through it with himself, it’s a lot everywhere. I would’ve liked if we got a little more in depth with this book but maybe in the sunny sequel.

I actually enjoyed reading Sunny's story. It was interesting to see how her and Jada handled their recovery journeys differently. I wasn’t a fan of Born in this book so his relationship with Jada not being the main focus was just fine with me. I appreciated the updates on the characters from Criminal Minded. I’m anxious to find out what happens with Zion and Olivia in the next book 😳

January 28, 2016Once you started reading you couldn't put it down. Only reason it took me three days because I have been extremely busy but trust me every chance I got I picked it up. I love Tracy Brown's books. She is an amazing author. Read this series of books. I promise she won't disappoint.

I'm not going to lie I was so tempted to jump to the 3rd book in this series because I really wanted to see how Jada and Born story would end. However I am so glad I didn't. Stormy smh her story was sad on so many levels.

Sunny, Sunny, Sunny…. I can’t begin to say how disappointed I am in Sunny. To have come so damn far and to fall so damn low. I’ve got to read part 3 to hear how this all ends. Shaking my damn head.
