Lost Shifters #16

Gage's Awakening

Rate this book
Hawk shifter Gage has never felt like he fit in—not when he was a teen struggling to survive on the streets and not now that he’s part of the coalition. But he puts on a happy face to hide his feelings and his battles with his inner demons. The only thing that brings Gage any happiness is Branson, a blind Lion shifter who is sexy as hell and smarter the rest of the coalition put together. Too bad Branson has made it clear that he wants nothing to do with Gage.

Branson has no idea why a hot young Hawk sifter would want damaged goods like him. For years, the rest of the coalition has ignored Branson and he’s gotten used to the solitude, making Gage’s attentions particularly unsettling. Despite his misgivings, Branson finds himself becoming more and more drawn to Gage.

Then a shocking secret from Gage’s past is revealed—a secret that could destroy not only the Hawk, but the whole coalition. Branson finds himself facing the biggest dilemma of all—does he choose the coalition or the man who’s managed to capture his heart?

Hawk shifter, Gage & Lion shifter Branson

Branson is blind when he is in his human form, but he can see when he is in his lion form. Gade is much younger and more playful than him. He has been trying for a long time to get Branson’s attention and he keeps teasing him. Unfortunately, Branson always misunderstands Gade’s intentions and he always thinks that Gade is making fun of him.
Jealousy always helps when someone cannot decide. So when Gade has a different shifter’s attention, Branson will make up his mind.
Hyenas also appear in this story and this is refreshing.

Overal, a nice addition to the series for a much anticipated story which has been building up for a few books now.

I know this series is pretty formulaic (with character portrayal, theme, and even "sitting on one's lap" scene :p) but like chips, I can't stop nibbling :). I like this one because it features a blind character (even if Branson gains his eyesight when he shifts into a Lion); it's always nice to have character that is not too perfect (though physically, he's like HANDSOME of course). I enjoy the 'game' that Gage creates, of stealing Branson's coin so the Lion will notice him. Personally, I've been waiting for Gage and Branson story since the first time it being hinted (all the way in story #8)

There is new info about Gage's past () and a couple of new shifters introduced, which I assume will set for next stories.

BAD editing still happens, for example, there is a Cougar shifter; at first the name is Damian, then in the middle of the story, the name is changed into Damien.

(PS: I emailed Stephani about this and the mistake got edited. So I think the new file from eXtasy will list the Cougar name as Damien)

You know what you will get, I think, especially if you are familiar with the series OR Stephani Hecht's writing, so no need for more opinion on this :)

In this installment, we get up close and personal with Gage, a hawk-shifter and fellow gang member from Ranger's rag-tag group. I've always liked Gage and he didn't disappoint here. Gage has found himself totally smitten with the blind lion shifter, Branson, who also serves as the feline coalition's historian. Initially, Branson rebuffs Gage's advances ... and he's quite cruel about it. But when Gage catches the attention of another suitor, Branson's resulting jealousy makes him realize that he truly has feelings for the friendly hawk. When Gage is sent on a mission to track down a renegade group of hyenas, however, he's in for a shock! Discovering his is enough to threaten everything that Gage has come to hold dear.

I liked this one all the way until the end.

Bottom-line: I liked this one up until the .

Although this book is not as bad as Russel's Reversal, I still would not call it good. I am still divided whether I will quit the series or not, since some parts of it still show potential albeit it is a fine line since they don't make up for its flaws and I have only low hopes that the author will ever change that. She had 16 books to do that and she didn't do it.
And for a woman who is supposedly so proud of her Cree heritage it is interesting to note that except for two, all her characters are white and mostly male (of course the hyena pack was all male, never mind that among actual hyenas the females are the boss). You should think that at least her range of beauty would be broader and if it is true that she neither chooses looks consciously and always writes the sex scenes how they come to her makes me think that she is either not very knowledgeable and/or much more narrow-minded than she actually thinks.

Now to the book:

Just under 3 stars.

This book was interesting because it features a blind shifter. While Branson is not blind in his lion form, he is blind in his human form after an attack by Ravens. Ever since the war with Ravens began, Branson has hated the "birds" to include the Hawks that were formerly allied with them. Branson is now happy to support the coalition as the historian and take care of his brother, Skye.

Gage is one of the lost shifters that was rescued with Riley. He has had a crush on Branson since he met him, but Gage is a Hawk shifter and too young and bratty for Branson. This story had a little too much of the same "woe is me, I'll never be good enough for him" aspect to it. Branson feels he's defected for being blind while Gage feels his life on the street as a hustler makes him not worthy of love. Okay, yeah, we've seen this before. I do have a soft spot for Gage, so I enjoyed reading this story, but it didn't give me that much more to the story except at the very end where it introduced some new shifters. I am curious to see what happens to these shifters in future books.

This series is interesting to me. While overall each book isn't that great, the editing is horrendous, and many of the books repeat the same formula over and over (with the exception of a couple of my favorites), it keeps adding just enough new characters and excitement to keep me reading. It also brings back just enough of my favorite characters to keep me happy. But I will say, thank goodness for Fictionwise and their 50% coupon.

Oh wow, this is my new favorite Lost Shifter book! I adored Shane and Trevor's stories and is had Shane, Carson (also another favorite) and violence. I must admit I've been geared up to read all about Gage since the first time we heard about the hawk's sticky fingers many books ago. Hecht really put time into ensuring there were no undone strings, we find out why Carson has been going on missions, we see more of Branson's inner demons and why he reacts the way he does, and of course how Shane's humanity has been revealed slowly since Trevor.

We also meet a group of hyena shifters and see future stories there. I'm worried about Skye (Branson's brother) and what he's 'on' hopefully someone will come and shake him up a bit.

I love Hecht and her Lost Shifter books have always been my go to for fun snarky pretty boys, honestly even the few books that weren't the favorites for me were still worth reading. If you're a fan of LS then I think you'll love this installment. Here's hoping the next one will come out soon!

Gage has been around for a while now and all his friends have found someone. It is good to see that Gage is getting a someone of his own. Gage is so narrow minded in his pursuit of Branson. Branson was just an idiot and Gage forgave WAY to easy.

I liked the writing. This one didn't have as much drama it seemed to me. I enjoyed it though because things were changing in the overall dynamic with Gage being a cross-breed and bringing in another species that has issues of it's own. It seems that the group must continue to put away prejudices and rely on what the shifter is under it all.

Maybe I'm just a grump but I liked it better before asshole lion and Gage got together. After that it was just so-so for me.

I'm thinking Gage's brother will end up with the slutty cougar. Since I'm behind On the series I could probably go read blurbs to see if I'm right but I'm too lazy.

And I don't get the title, what did Gage awaken from? IMO "Asshole Lion's Awakening" fits better since I never really noticed Gage having an awaken and smell the chunky coffee moment

This review is for all of the Lost Shifters, Wayne County Wolves, and Assassin's Loyalty books since they are all interconnected and I read them back-to-back pretty much nonstop over a 10 day period. If I have anything to say about a particular book I'll add it under this bulk review. First, I'd like to mention these are more like novellas than books but they have the same underlying theme and pretty much continue where the last left off but with a different couple.

Everything starts out with the Lost Shifters. To summarize there was a war between the feline shifters and the raven shifters. 20 years or so before the first book there was an all out slaughter in which hundreds of feline homes were attacked and burned down all of the occupants believed to be killed. Turns out that the babies and toddlers that were assumed lost were not. They were hidden within the human foster care system for the most part. I won't say how because that'd be a big spoiler. In addition to foster care some kids were sold into slavery and that's where the whole assassin thing comes in. A couple of the main characters marry into the wolf pack so that's where those books come in as well.

Pros: Since the books are so short there are no long drawn out boring details or general angst. There's usually only one sex scene although it's normally long as hell. Which makes the fact some people shelved these as erotica confusing. I liked the world building and even though there were times I think a little more info might have been nice it never detracted from the story or left me confused. Most of the relationships were a sort of love at first sight thing. Or maybe lust or obsession? Despite this the shifters all seem adamant that's not a thing that happens. There wasn't one character I didn't like. My favorite character was Shane and he must have been the author's as well since he got a few extra books and a side series Shane's Chronicles. There's no big end battle or anything but the last book Baily's 9th Life does pretty much tie things up nicely. I think if I'd been reading the series when they were released I'd be a bit miffed because that book didn't come out until a few years later if you weren't reading the assassins books. Also, these books all have some really funny moments and/or dialog.

Cons: The last several books didn't appear to have been edited at all. If if wasn't for the fact that I was so invested in the overall story arc I would have quit reading them. Things like sent instead of scent and too instead of to they instead of them and random wrong words completely. There were also a couple of times that things were said/thought almost verbatim in different parts of a book as if the author forgot she'd already put that info in there already. At the start of the series, they state that all feline shifters are bisexual but at some point the author must have forgotten that detail because suddenly there are gay shifters and homophobia and all this hate. Which brings me to my next con, the themes of the different books started to repeat. Suddenly all these shifters had been thrown out of their previous pack or coalition or human home for being gay. And throughout this huge series of books there was only one straight couple. Like not even a straight friend or whatever. Even the females were all lesbians. It was just kinda unrealistic especially with the whole gay hate thing going on. Usually there's at least a few couples or friends or something on the periphery in gay romances especially in a world this huge. Which brings me to my final con, I had a hard time remembering who was who and what there story was after awhile especially if they weren't mentioned much in previous books. I wish there had been some sort of glossary to review.

Despite the cons, I would still recommend these books. All-in-all I really enjoyed them and was dreading the end although the editing in the last few books really had me also looking forward to the end if I'm being honest.

It seems like it was just yesterday that I stumbled onto the 'Lost Shifters' series by Stephani Hecht. It's even more amazing to me that I'm up to book sixteen and still haven't lost interest or gotten bored. That's pretty remarkable! I enjoy these stories and even though there is some predictability within them, the author has written the series in a way that I am attached to each of these characters and really want to see their happy ever after. I was excited about reading Gage's book because a hawk and a lion? Hmm.

I fell for Gage...oh, a number of books back when I saw how kind, protective, loyal, and loving he was with his mismatched group of shifters who all banded together out on the streets. Now, of course, he's been with the feline coalition for awhile and is an active soldier in their fight against the Ravens. Gage is a hawk and he basically doesn't think he really fits in anywhere, a feeling he's had his whole life. He's lost his heart to Branson, a blind lion shifter who can only see in his animal form, but Branson hates the Hawks for their involvement with the Ravens all those years ago. Branson is in charge of the historical archives and for months Gage will sneak in, steal a coin, and wait for Branson to come after him. It's the only way Gage can get Branson to even acknowledge his presence. But, it's been weeks now and Branson hasn't come after his coin, and it's breaking Gage's heart knowing his mate wants nothing to do with him.

Poor Branson. Born blind, he hoped he'd regain his sight after his first change, but no such luck. What good is a blind man, even a lion, in the war against the Ravens? So, Branson is bookish, and kind of a nerd (I love him!), and he doesn't like bird shifters, at all. Maybe because he's always been on the receiving end of such horrible taunts and mean-spirited mischief. Branson figures Gage is just like the rest of them so even though he's attracted to Gage, Branson can't believe that Gage could actually want him. But when someone else shows interest in Gage, it sets off all of Branson's primal instincts to claim Gage.

I loved these guys! Gage and Branson are adorable together and the little extra suspenseful twist to the story made reading this book even more entertaining. Just like with all the previous books, now I'm looking forward to the next installment.

This was a quick story. Most of them feel that way, but this seemed extra short.

I like Gage. He’s cute and not as extreme in his ways as some of the other boys in this series. (Really, about half of the cast feel like teenagers; some even are.) He does seem a bit whiny, although his reasons become clearer once we learn the details of his history. As it turns out, Gage has had it worse than almost every other of the abused waifs thus far. (Admittedly his back story sounds familiar several times over.)

Gage’s friendly disposition and lonely nature make it even worse that Branson is such a racist and all around unkind person. For at least half the book I kept wanting to yell at Gage to get away from that guy, but of course that wouldn’t have done much good even if he had been able to hear me. *sigh*

“(…) I guess there will always be a little prejudice between different breeds of shifters. I mean you should know that better than anybody since you’re a historian.”

Or maybe Branson should know that best since he is a prejudiced jerk who hates all bird shifters just because one type is apparently inclined to be murderous.
I wish Gage had said something along those lines instead. At least Branson acknowledges this on his own. That goes a long way towards consoling me.

Shane’s support of Gage is lovely; he’s generally sweet in this – albeit not very much of a psycho. I suppose the rehabilitation is in full swing.

In a moment of oddness that made me frown, Gage refers to Damien as a jerk there near the end. Why would he do that? Just because Branson did it first? Since Damien was really nice to him and they seemed to get along well on their pseudo date. I’d hate to have to think badly of Gage.

Either way, I do like the ending. There’s nothing like to tie up loose ends and leave you with a fuzzy feeling.
For that it gets the three stars; otherwise it’d surely have been a two.

I'm giving this a 4.5 stars.

The story is about Gage, a hawk shifter and one of the stray that was held captive for a year with Noah. He has been in a depress mood because the one guy who took his heart, meaning it was love at first sight, has been ignoring him and does not want to be in a relationship with him. Enter Branson, a lion shifter and is also blind, who want nothing to do with Gage or does he. In realty Branson does have an attraction to Gage but because he is a blind he think that he does not deserve someone like Gage, even though has been trying to be in a relationship for the past year and yet he still does not get the message. However, a secret is reveal that may chance both of Gage and Branson relationship. Will it be strong to prevail or will there not be one.

I have to say this is my second favorite book and I love the couple for this story. Gage has been in love with Branson since the moment he saw him and has been trying to get his attention by stealing a old coin in the artifact that Branson work. I find it cute that he will do anything to get his attention but Branson was still a jerk and he should know that Gage has strong feeling for him. It doesn't need a blind man to see that, no pun intended, but he could use a goo wake up call and he did and that is all that matter.

I would have given this a full 5 stars but there were some grammar problem and half the time I didn't get what they were saying that I need to reread the line three time before I get an idea what they were saying but that only happen twice so it was to bad. If it wasn't for this problem then it will get a full mark but it was still a good book to read and like I say this one is another favorite.

I appreciated the way that Gage and Branson kept mis-reading each other because of the way they filtered their current interactions through past memories. Branson spent so much time being picked on that he just thought Gage was taunting him when Gage made his interest known. Gage's ugly childhood and young adulthood made rejection even harder to deal with. I loved the way Branson's younger brother sneakily pushed everyone's buttons to force the issue and I think my favorite scene was when Branson chased Gage down in front of all his friends.

Stephani Hecht is a terrible writer. I don't feel like pulling any punches here, because to do otherwise would be a disservice to my fellow readers. These books are awful, but have their own compelling pull. I wanted to carry on to see what happened next, even though the writing was making me insane, the characters were all the same, and the sex was becoming incredibly redundant. It wasn't until I got to the third book based on Shane (seriously, again?), that I finally hit a wall and couldn't read any more. It was (sorta) fun while it lasted.

Gage is a sweet hawk shifter who is hiding a deep dark secret. (Okay he thinks it is so terrible) If he would have left it out and moved on with is life it would have been over done with. He fell in love with a blind shifter who could see in his shifted for. Okay I still don't understand this) The book was quick an painless to read. If it had a 116 pages I would be surprise bit that is what it said. Took two hours to read but it was enjoyable so to speak.

Notes:

I like Damien! A lot! I hope there's going to be a story about him.

I like where they're going with Skye.

A woman in this series!

Love that it's about a blind guy.

The younger man used a lot.

Hypocritical for Shane to judge all hyenas as violent.

The Coalition leader would not leave anyone alone in his office.

Too short and simple but complete and enjoyable. Conflict not very heed though.

These little books kind of bleed into each other so we've met Gage and Branson before. Gage is always stealing things from Branson hoping to get his attention and hopefully more. Branson is a blind lion shifter and think he's defective therefore not worth much. So basically this is another cute book in the Lost Shifters series with a ton of characters we've met before and some new ones that will be featured later, I'm sure. Easy reading.

I really enjoyed the lastest in the Lost Shifters series.
Hecht always seems to come up with a new situation for the shifters to contend with and Gage's story was no different.
I have to say I'm looking forward to see if she comes up with something for Kellan and Skye, together or seperatly. They should be good stories.

Gage has been chasing Branson, a blind lion shifter, for a while, but Branson keeps pushing him away. At the same time Gage is struggling with feelings of not fitting in with the other hawk shifters.
The romance between Gage and Branson is nicely developed; they're both awkward and stubborn and convinced they're not good enough.
There's also an interesting story regarding Gage's background.

The only reason I rated it that low was because it was so short and there was barely any smex in the book. The book is worth reading if you are already a fan of the series. There was some funny parts that had me cracking up. I can't wait for the next book to come out.

I was glad to see Gage's mate finally pull his head out of his ass, although seriously, the amount of damage those shifters do to the facility, they must have to pull extra jobs to pay for all the repairs. I'm quite interested in Branson's brother.
