About the author

Pramoedya Ananta Toer was an Indonesian author of novels, short stories, essays, polemics, and histories of his homeland and its people. A well-regarded writer in the West, Pramoedya's outspoken and often politically charged writings faced censorship in his native land during the pre-reformation era. For opposing the policies of both founding president Sukarno, as well as those of its successor, the New Order regime of Suharto, he faced extrajudicial punishment. During the many years in which he suffered imprisonment and house arrest, he became a cause célèbre for advocates of freedom of expression and human rights.

Indrukwekkende kennismaking met Pramoedya Ananta Toer, de Indonesische schrijver die opkwam voor mensenrechten en politiek geëngageerd was, wat hem niet in dank werd afgenomen door de Indonesische machthebbers. Hierdoor belandde hij diverse keren in de gevangenis en werd daarna beperkt in zijn bewegingsvrijheid. Een schrijver waar ik zeker nog meer van ga lezen.

Pramoedya Ananta Toer vertelt in het indrukwekkende titelverhaal ‘Een koude Kermis’ over het laatste bezoek aan zijn vader in de plaats Blora op Java. Pramoedya is de oudste zoon. Hij komt net uit de gevangenis vanwege zijn rol in het Indonesische verzet. Hij ziet al zijn broertjes en zusjes. Zijn moeder en een van zijn zusjes zijn al overleden. Zijn vader ligt op sterven en neemt afscheid van het leven, gekweld door pijn. Toer beschrijft zijn achteruitgang en het verdriet van hemzelf en zijn zusjes. Hij verblijft enkele weken samen met zijn vrouw in Blora, alvorens weer naar zijn woonplaats Djakarta te gaan. Het verhaal is echt een ode aan de vader, die op het laatst alleen nog ijs wil eten, op zoek naar verkoeling. Naast deze novelle bevat de bundel drie verhalen die ook alle in Blora spelen, tegen de achtergrond van oorlog en geweld.
Ik vind de bundel indrukwekkend, ook omdat Toer schrijft vanuit het Indonesisch perspectief en Nederland als koloniale mogendheid een belangrijke rol heeft gespeeld bij deze geschiedenis. Ook in de literatuur komt dit uiting. Vanaf Multatuli tot Adriaan van Dis is er door Nederlandse auteurs veel over Indie geschreven. Toer heeft zich niet alleen uitgesproken tegen Nederlandse overheersing maar ook tegen corruptie in Indonesië. Ook daar betaalde hij een tol voor. Hij heeft een flink deel van zijn leven in gevangenschap doorgebracht terwijl hij geen misdadiger was maar opkwam voor mensenrechten en democratie.

A tragic tale that explains the Indonesian experience of Dutch colonial occupation and the rise of the Independence movement that culminated in the establishement fo the Republic. Over 500 pages long, originally in several volumes, Pramoedya composed it orally first because he was not allowed pen or paper whie he was held in prison without charge for years for being a communist sympathiser under the Soeharto regime. Every day he added to the story as he told it to his fellow prisoners. The half Indonesian daughter of a Dutch colonial is not allowed to marry her Indonesian boyfriend because she is "Dutch" and is taken against her will to Holland. It is dense and provides a detailed impression of life in the early 20th century in East java. I have been reading it off and on for 30 years. Required reading for an understand and appreciation of modern Indonesian history, art and culture.
