He also acted in films, notably in Brendan Behan’s The Quare Fellow. With the success of his third book, Rain on the Wind, he devoted his time to writing. His plays include Mungo’s Mansion (1946) and Home is the Hero (1952).

One of the most satisfying experiences a human being can have is reading a book to one of your children that you read (and loved) as a child. I discovered "Flight of the Doves" when I was a teenager. I remember how it caught my imagination. A 12-year-old boy, in an attempt to protect his gentle, innocent little sister from an abusive step-father, runs away with her. He is trying to get to a village with a name he doesn't know in a country that is not his own. His grandmother lives there and he has foggy memories of her from when he was young. The odds are against them. Not only does he not know the way, but his step father learns of a legacy left to the children (after they ran away) and is motivated to bring them home. The police are on the hunt, rewards bring other adventurers after the children. What really warms the book is how people step in to help the children, some knowingly and others in ignorance. The boy is no superhero and knows he will fail without the help of others. The Doves' flight is very human and grounded. There are no green screens, explosions, violence, or sex--just two children who want a chance to find someone who loves them and find love and kindness amid their adventures on their way there. My daughter blessed me by loving the book as much as I did. She reads as well as I do, but it was great reading this out loud with her.

Finn's mother remarried after the death of his father. Then she passed away, leaving him with his step-father Uncle Toby.
Finn realises that Toby's abuse is escalating, so he decides to run away, taking his little sister Derval with him. Sneaking on board a ferry crossing the Irish Sea, the pair set off to find their granny. She lives somewhere in the west of Ireland. Finn's not too sure of the exact location but, from his vague childhood recollections of a long-ago visit to granny, it involves a train ride and a bus ride and, providing he can elude the customs officers and ticket collectors, he's sure it won't be too difficult a trip.
However, almost as soon as they flee, Toby is informed of an inheritance from a long-lost American relative - and he wants them back to ensure he has a legitimate claim on it. The police forces of two countries are notified - and are now on the alert. But one Irish detective is suspicious about Uncle Toby's motives and his description of Finn's cruel, rebellious nature. Everywhere he goes, ordinary people seem willing to protect Finn and Derval and hide them from pursuit. It's clear the children are likeable, not nasty.
Will Michael the detective pick them up and take them back to their step-father? Or will he tell them granny's address and send them on their way?
Highly reminiscent of I Am David, but I found this story much more satisfying.

Hoà mình vào chuyến phiêu lưu của cặp anh em Fin - Derval họ nhà Dove sau nhiều bị lần đánh đập vô lí dưới sự tay của ông cậu Toby - gã hai mặt luôn đưa chuyện nuôi dưỡng tụi nhỏ lên mặt báo cao cao thượng thượng tung hô công lao của mình trong nhiều năm ba mẹ tụi nhỏ qua đời.
Trên hành trình “bay đi tìm bà”, những cuộc hội ngộ giữa những con người dễ thương, tử tế đã giúp các em từ cái ăn, chỗ ngủ, phương tiện đi lại đã góp một phần lớn đưa hai anh em đến đích.
Đây là một quyển rất ư dễ thương, kéo mood mình lên khá nhiều. Dù chỉ là tác phẩm thiếu nhi nhưng bài học được đưa ra đến người đọc rất nhiều tầng nghĩa. Nhìn vào sự bảo bọc, che chở của Finn đối với cô em gái của cậu, hẳn rằng ai ai cũng tấm tắc mong đến một người anh trai lý tưởng như cậu.

Flight of the Doves is an example of just how brilliant children's books can be. Macken never once panders to the intended age of his audience and the result is an intelligent and compelling novel, realistic and unidealised characters and a sharp moral that isn't at all overbearing.
The first thing I noticed about this book was its beautiful writing style - Macken makes great use of several simple sentences, not only putting you in the mindset of the very straight-forward and logical Finn but also creating a great subtlety in his work often lacking in other children's books. In several places, what is left unsaid is almost more poignant and important than what is written down. And Macken doesn't once compensate for the fact that Flight of the Doves is a children's book, being perfectly happy to include words such as 'inexorable', 'phosphorescent' and 'sibilant' which I certainly wouldn't have known when I was seven ^__^;;.
Not only beautifully written, Flight of the Doves is a page turner and a half! The plight of Finn and Derval always manages to surprise, and I found myself desperately willing them to succeed over each difficulty placed in their path. Finn is an incredibly endearing hero and he continued to impress me with his ingenious escape methods as well as his touching care for Derval. Macken also expertly describes that time of your life when you want to be an adult and find, to your great frustration, that you are held back by still being a child. Many writers seem to choose an age for their character and then write them a couple of years out, but not Macken: Finn's determination to be adult in his actions and manner and the way it is matched by his more childish trust, honesty and innocence perfectly mirror his age.
And that childish trust was rarely misplaced, which was one of the things I loved most about this book. The idea that two children could invoke the compassion of the adults they met and unknowingly persuade them to help them was wonderfully executed, never feeling forced. Macken also manages - over very few pages - to kindle empathy in the reader for these adult characters who ignore the chance of monetary rewards and the fact that they'll be breaking the law to help the two runaways. He contrasts this with the quite disgusting and pathetic figure of Uncle Toby - a man we always see as 'Uncle' Toby, through Finn's eyes - and the equally repulsive Nicko, creating a whole host of well-developed and convincing characters.
Perhaps it was the tangible reality of this book that impressed me most. Its no-nonsense matter-of-fact narration of an extremely emotionally challenging tale was inspiring. My only criticism would be that, like many children's books, the ending suffered from a half-hearted aftermath. I felt that either the book should have been left at the triumphant end of the penultimate chapter, or required a longer re-equilibrium section. The last two pages provided nothing more than a slight anti-climax and I found myself flicking back to re-read Finn's moving speech to the judge and Michael's triumphant, "You did it Finn!" to regain a sense of satisfaction.
Despite this slight criticism (and don't get me wrong, it is only a slight problem), Flight of the Doves has impressed me far more than I thought possible. Truly unable to put it down, I still find my mind swirling with thoughts of Finn and Derval's flight to Ireland and the idea that no matter how helpless you may feel, help is always at hand.

My grandma recommended this book to me years ago but it was out of print so I couldn't get my hands on it. Some years pass and enter Amazon. She is still shocked it was so easy for me to buy it and that I got it for a reasonable price, ( as in 20 or so cents).
Flight of the Doves by Walter Macken, is about the two flight of the two Dove children. They are being treated very poorly by their stepfather after their mother dies and they decide they are going to cross the water from England to Ireland and find their grandmother. Their stepfather is more than happy to not care that they are gone until he finds out they are heirs to a large some of money. Then the chase begins. The make it to Ireland very early in the book and then spend the rest of it roaming the Irish countryside trying to get home to their grandma.
All in all, I really liked this book. I started reading it about 11:30 last night, planning of just reading a few chapters, when I looked up it was 1:00 in the morning and I had finished it. It was a sweet story about siblings who adore each other and take the pains to take care of each other. It is not the best written book I have ever read but it is sweet and it is a very easy read. So, if you find yourself in the need of an easy but fun read, pick up Flight of the Doves.

Finn and his little sister Derval are unhappy in London and don't like their guardian. They decide to run away back to Ireland, where their dead parents had come from, and find their cousins.
Their adventure is very daring but realistic and the change of heart experienced by their guardian when he discovers that the children will inherit some money is amusing.
This story was filmed and grown actors included Ronnie Drew and Dana; there were some very nice songs.

Maybe, not as good as the first time round but still an exciting story for children (read it to my 9 year old son and he enjoyed it alot).

Cuộc phiêu lưu ngọt ngào của hai anh em nhà Dove.
Đúng như tên truyện, “Bồ câu bay đi tìm bà” kể về hành trình gian nan của Finn và Derval chạy trốn khỏi dượng Toby xấu xa và đến một đất nước xa lạ tìm bà ngoại O’Flaherty. Khao khát rằng em gái của mình có thể sống trong tình yêu thương, cùng với những mảnh kí ức vụn vặt về chuyến đi thăm bà nhiều năm trước, cậu bé 12 tuổi Finn quyết định kết thúc những ngày tháng tăm tối ở cùng dượng Toby và bắt đầu chuyến đi tìm hạnh phúc với đầy rẫy khó khăn đang chờ đợi.
Như mọi người vẫn thường hay nói, may mắn sẽ đến khi ta đủ nỗ lực và cả vũ trụ sẽ góp sức giúp đỡ khi ta thực sự muốn làm điều gì đó. Vũ trụ đã mang đến Poll, Nickser, Micheal và Moses,… như những vị cứu tinh của anh em “bồ câu”. Như mình có viết ở đầu, đây là một chuyến phiêu lưu ngọt ngào. Thường thì phiêu lưu sẽ luôn gắn với đắng cay, thử thách nhưng vị ngọt mà mình cảm nhận được ở đây chính là tình người. Khi mà con người ta giúp nhau không phải vì mong muốn sau này sẽ được nhận lại, mà chỉ đơn giản là vì ở thời điểm hiện tại chính họ muốn như vậy, thì đây mới là lòng tốt thực sự.
“Đây là toàn bộ ý nghĩa của chuyện này. Đây là lý do tại sao mình làm việc này, để em gái mình được ở bên những người yêu thương nó, lắng nghe nó nói. Vì chính điều này, nếu không phải là vì điều gì khác.” Mình cực kì khâm phục cậu bé Finn. 12 tuổi, cậu có tinh thần quyết tâm và dũng cảm, có sự khôn ngoan và nhanh nhẹn, và trên hết là tình yêu vô bờ dành cho em gái. Chính những điều này đã viết nên câu chuyện đầy kịch tính nhưng cũng rất ấm áp.
Một điều mà mình không thích ở câu chuyện này là cái kết quá đơn giản. Dượng Toby dường như không phải trả giá cho những tổn thương mà ông đã gây ra. Ngoài lề một chút, mình đọc cuốn này song song với “Đại dương đen” của bác Giang, sở dĩ vì “Đại dương đen” dark quá nên mình muốn tìm một cuốn vui tươi hơn để kéo mood lại. Cũng vì vậy nên khi đọc cuốn này mình bị ảnh hưởng khá nhiều. Nếu mọi người đã đọc thì sẽ nhận ra rằng hầu hết cả nhân vật trong “Đại dương đen” đều phải trải qua một tuổi thơ không mấy êm đẹp (bố mẹ ly hôn, bị bố bạo hành, ngược đãi, bị xâm hại,…). Ấy vậy nên mình nghĩ rằng lẽ ra với những đau đớn cả về thể xác lẫn tinh thần mà anh em nhà Dove đã phải chịu ở tầm tuổi đó thì dượng Toby hẳn phải chịu một hình phạt thích đáng từ toà. Mọi chuyện không thể nào êm xuôi chỉ bằng một lời nói như vậy được…

Câu chuyện dành cho trẻ em thực sự hay. Hơi tiếc rằng ngoại trừ tính phiêu lưu thì không có bài học nào sâu sắc cả.
Cốt truyện hay và hợp lý. Nhân vật Finn được xây dựng với quyết tâm cao. Nhưng mình đánh giá các nhân vật phụ ở cả hai phía được xây dựng thú vị hơn nhiều. Mình khá cảm động khi hai con ngựa trắng với các kỵ sĩ xuất hiện.
Cái kết rất thực tế, vì mục tiêu cuối cùng là hạnh phúc của hai đứa trẻ. Nhưng mà mình không thích lắm vì nó chưa thực sự thoả mãn.

Found this by accident on the "books for sale" shelf at the library. A book published in 1968, written for young people (late grade school?) about 2 children who run away from their mean step-father once their mother has died. It's a lovely adventure, a romp though Irish countryside, with lots of kind people and the kind of scrapes that young people would love. And I loved it, too!

My most memorable childhood book! I can still remember the teacher reading it out to us on the class mat. I was aged 8 & have never been able to find a copy to purchase for my bookcase . This is a story I want my future Grandkids to read.

Một cuốn sách siêuuu đáng yêu về Finn và em gái của cậu ấy, Derval. Mình nhớ hôm mình đọc, mình có xem được story của ai đó nói rằng “đừng đọc bìa sau” ngay lập tức tâm lý của mình né luôn và không hề tin vào bìa sau. Nhưng mà thật sự không ngoa=))) bìa sau nói thật 100% ấy, cuốn này siêuuuu ngọt ngào mà siêu dễ thương ấy. Với những người bị thất vọng bởi những cuốn *sách thiếu nhi* được overrate như mình, thật lòng đây là một liều thuốc cứu chữa tâm hồn mình. Thề đấy, mọi người phải đọc ngay đi, vì quá đáng yêu, đáng yêu khủng khiếp.
Đây là review tử tế. Dượng Toby đánh Finn, hôm ấy Finn đã lên quyết định, mình sẽ lên tàu đến Ai Len để tìm người bà của mình. Sau khi Finn đi, ban đầu dượng Toby không quan tâm lắm và nghĩ thật may mắn khi thoát khỏi 2 đứa trẻ chẳng liên can gì tới đời mình, nhưng sau khi nghe ông sếp của mình nói người họ hàng ở Mỹ qua đời và để lại cho 2 anh em nhà Doves số tài sản kếch xù thì dượng Toby mới quyết định nhờ cảnh sát và báo chí đi tìm hai đứa trẻ, sử dụng mọi thủ đoạn để tìm thấy hai chúng vì dượng Toby là người giám hộ hợp pháp mà, và dượng sẽ được hưởng món tiền ấy. Finn là cậu bé có máu phiêu lưu cộng thêm sự thông minh và lòng dũng cảm, Finn đã vượt qua những thử thách mà dương Toby gây ra. Derval là một đứa trẻ đáng yêu, vô tư hồn nhiên. Sau khi Finn đi, ban đầu dượng Toby không quan tâm lắm và nghĩ thật may mắn khi thoát khỏi 2 đứa trẻ chẳng liên can gì tới đời mình, nhưng sau khi nghe ông sếp của mình nói người họ hàng ở Mỹ qua đời và để lại cho 2 anh em nhà Doves số tài sản kếch xù thì dượng Toby mới quyết định nhờ cảnh sát và báo chí đi tìm hai đứa trẻ, sử dụng mọi thủ đoạn để tìm thấy hai chúng vì dượng Toby là người giám hộ hợp pháp mà, và dượng sẽ được hưởng món tiền ấy. Finn là cậu bé có máu phiêu lưu cộng thêm sự thông minh và lòng dũng cảm, Finn đã vượt qua những thử thách mà dương Toby gây ra. Derval là một đứa trẻ đáng yêu, vô tư hồn nhiên. Love.
Finn and Derval Dove used to live between the loving arms of their family. But since the deaths of their father and then, their mother, the boy - Finn had to served their cruel step-dad and yet, still suffered from his beating and wheaping. Therefore, he decided to take his little sister - Derval and escape to his grandmother living hundred miles away, where he had little memory about. On his journey, he faced the risk of being caught by the police, of starving, and he still managed to overcome these threats with the help of many good people. In the end, they reunited with their grandma.
The book has quite a predictable plot, however, the actions and behaviours of Finn are truly extraordinary. Indeed, they are full of love. On the road, he took every little care of Derval, for example, making sure she had enough warm clothes, risking his freedom (and conscience) to buy food, and cutting down Derval' hair so that she would not be recognized. And not only that, I was moved by his rationale to leave. He escaped, not because of the beating and whipping that he suffered, but because of lack of care for his sister, who cried every time he was beaten. He escaped with the one and only purpose to have his sister between the loving arms of family, to be cared and to be loved.
The book is great, and its greatness lies in its immesurable love.

•Một câu chuyện phiêu lưu quả thực vô cùng đáng yêu, dễ thương; mạch truyện vô cùng kịch tính khiến cho bản thân đọc mãi không thể ngừng được!!!!
•Tuyến nhân vật chính xây dựng ổn định với hai nhận vật chính là Finn và Derval họ Dove, ta theo chân hai anh em đi trên chuyến phiêu lưu đầy li kì để trở về với người bà dấu yêu. Song ngoài tính phiêu lưu, đời thực thì cảm xúc bên trong nhân vật chính chưa được xây dựng sâu, đáng lẽ tác giả nên đi sâu vào thế giới nội tâm mà từ đó khám phá nên những giá trị tốt của nhân vật thì tác phẩm thực sự là vô cùng tuyệt vời. Tuyến nhân vật phụ thì chưa được đầu tư chỉnh chu lắm, có lẽ là do xuất hiện khá ít nên chưa có đất dụng võ, nhân vật dượng Toby có lẽ là nhân vật phụ được đầu tư nhất thể hiện qua tính cách nham hiểm, hám lợi, giả tạo và chỉ chựt lúc trục lợi mặc dù xuất hiện vô cùng ít và nhân vật Micheal-một viên cảnh sát tốt bụng.
•Văn phong bình dị, gần gũi giúp giữ mạch truyện ổn định. Bài học trong sách đơn giản song chưa rõ ràng khiến cho bạn đọc tưởng rằng đây chỉ là một câu chuyện vô bổ🫨. Kết thực tế nhưng cảm thấy như vậy là chưa thỉa mãn lắm

Maybe this book doesn't really deserve five stars. But it was one of the more beloved books I stumbled on as a child (my copy is from Scholastic Books, and I remember how I loved to scan the pages of those order forms when I was in grade school, picking out all the books I want, then narrowing it to the one or two I could afford). I have never stopped loving it, and I would say that although the writing style is dated (I suppose a modern editor would say there's too much telling instead of showing), the story completely works. What's more, the simple good vs. evil nature of the story, and the ways in which the black-and-white characters are nuanced even while leaving no doubt who's a good guy and who isn't, makes it soothing reading in these difficult times.

Finn trước hết là 1 đứa bé đủ kỹ năng sống cơ bản trong chuyến vượt biên tìm bà chẳng mấy khả thi, có bản lĩnh của cậu trai trẻ mang dòng máu Ai Len, có sự bình tĩnh, kiên nhẫn, có ý chí, sự cố gắng, khéo léo và cả liều lĩnh để vượt qua những rào cản suót chặng đường dài, có thừa sự quan tâm và yêu thương cô em gái bé bỏng luôn ngoan ngoãn đồng hành cùng anh.
Tất nhiên đây là một chuyến phiêu lưu gian nan nhưng suôn sẻ, vì may mắn của 1 đứa trẻ mười hai còn có những cái tên giàu trắc ẩn: Poll, Tom, Nickser, Moses và Michael!
Cốt truyện hài hoà, có gay cấn ở phía sau, nội dung có thể hơi màu nhiệm nhưng xứng đáng để ngợi ca. 4 sao cho truyện và thêm 1 sao cho niềm tin vào những người tốt việc đẹp!

I'm not going to describe the plot, because many others have. This book was hard to put down. Shocking in parts. Sweet. Determined. Beautifully descriptive of the local areas they pass through. A story of what happens when the risks of the open road are less than that of home. Of trust in people's better nature, and the ability to care and look after each other, but also of the dangers posed by those around. Also about "Social Contract" - the ability to adhere to the rules that help keep societies flowing, trustful, having the back of your neighbour, (we especially see that in the last chapter as the locals rally to the children), choosing kindness and to see the best in your community. Brilliant read.

xây dựng nhân vật hay và ấn tượng.cốt truyện hay nhưng ko hấp dẫn lắm.đọc thì vẫn đoán trước dc cái gì tiếp diễn nhưng snghi nhân vật thì ko.ấn tượng nhất là michael,lúc đầu nghĩ ổng cx giống như bao người muốn làm nhưng cuối cùng lại nghe theo lý trí và tò mò của mình.cx thích cách tg xây dựng hoàn cảnh chống lại dượng toby nữa,thích cả những snghi về lý do khiến fin luôn cố gắng đến cùng vì em gái.ban đầu cứ ngỡ cậu làm vì muốn giải thoát và tìm kiếm điều tốt đẹp cho cả hai,nhưng thực chất lí do cuối cùng và động lực nhất vẫn là vì đứa em nhỏ.đọc được nhưng hơi nhàm

🌟Cá nhân mình thấy cốt truyện, nội dung ổn, ngôn ngữ thì phù hợp không quá khó hiểu. Thông điệp mà tác giả gửi gắm thông qua câu chuyện về anh em nhà Dove thực sự khiến chúng ta suy nghĩ. Đó là khao khát được sống dưới một tình yêu thương đúng nghĩa. Để thực hiện đc khát khao đó hai ae nhà Dove đã trải qua muôn vàn những khó khăn, thử thách nhưng bằng một phép nhiệm mầu nào đó hok đã vượt qua all và đến đc con đg mà họ mong muốn.

Một cuốn sách với nhiều điều dễ thương và mang tới những thông điệp tích cực cho cuộc sống. Dẫu chuyến phiêu lưu của hai chú bồ câu nhỏ phải trải qua nhiều gian truân và thử thách, nhưng lòng tốt sẽ luôn xuất hiện đúng lúc đúng chỗ. Đọc sách xong làm ta cảm thấy yêu đời hơn, tin tưởng vào lòng tốt của con người hơn. Cuối cùng thì mọi chuyện đã có một kết cục tốt đẹp, và hai chú bồ câu nhỏ đã bay được tới nơi bà của mình

Một câu chuyện thiếu nhi hơi quá lứa tuổi của mình nhưng mình lại thích đọc sách thiếu nhi 😂 câu chuyện kể về hành trình của hai anh em bỏ trốn khỏi người dượng ác độc và tìm về với bà ngoại, truyện trẻ con nên không đòi hỏi quá nhiều về mặt logic cũng như tính hợp lý, điều đáng nói là mình thích cách hai anh em luôn yêu thương, bảo vệ và tin tưởng lẫn nhau, tình yêu sẽ chiến thắng, đặc biệt khi đó là máu mủ với mình.

January 27, 2023Hai chú chim dễ thương hết sức, vì thế mà trên chặng đường phiêu lưu ấy đã có những cánh tay thiện lành chìa ra tiếp sức cho đôi cánh bé nhỏ nhanh chóng bay đến với bà ngoại. Mike đã đại diện cho cả người lớn và công quyền để làm dịu đi những cay đắng mà tụi nhỏ lỡ phải chịu đựng. Một câu chuyện rất êm.

Một tác phẩm hay cho thiếu nhi, tuy nhiên hành trình của hai em không có nhiều thăng trầm trở ngại như một số cuộc phiêu lưu ở các tác phẩm khác, được nhiều người giúp đỡ và may mắn không bị bắt trở lại.

I read this book when I was younger; many, many times. And I can still see why I loved it so much. It's a wonderful story; I love the characters and the story line. It was like visiting with old friends.

One of the best most memorable books I ever read as a child. I think I was about 8 or 9 when I read it and that's a long time ago now but I've never forgotten how gripping it was.
