Esta biografía causó en Francia un gran revuelo porque por primera vez se quebrantaban, con datos irrefutables, ciertos mitos, hasta entonces intocables, acerca de la vida y la obra del autor de Madame Bovary . Tuvo que ser un biógrafo extranjero, de la talla de Herbert Lottman , quien se atreviera a contrastar documentos, en particular su abundante correspondencia y la de sus amigos, a rebuscar en archivos y a enfrentarse con los llamados enigmas en torno a su vida : su presunta «incapacidad» infantil, su gran amor adolescente por Elisa Schlesinger, las repercusiones de la epilepsia en su obra, o sus relaciones amorosas con la insoportable Louise Colet y con la misteriosa institutriz inglesa Juliet Herbert. Aquel a quien se tenía por el «idiota de la familia» o el «ermitaño de Croisset» aparece aquí como un adolescente despierto, conversador, sociable, y más tarde como un hombre inquieto, viajero y preocupado por su carrera literaria en París, donde frecuentaba el gran mundo político e intelectual.

Herbert Lottman was an American journalist and author who spend most of his life in France.
He majored in English and biology at the University of New York, graduating in 1948 and earned a master’s in English from Columbia in 1951.
In 1956 he moved to Paris and became the manager of the Paris branch of the publisher Farrar, Straus and Giroux. He also was writing for Publishers Weekly for four decades and wrote a novel, Detours From the Grand Tour.
But he is most reknowned for his biographies on French personalities and his writings on French intellectual life.
