I am, of course, rather biased about this book, as I wrote it (along with my co-author Sophie)!

This book arose from each of our experiences as hip dysplasia patients. I was diagnosed with dysplasia as a young child (20 months), and had masses of childhood surgery. As is typical with dysplasia, my hip developed arthritis in my 30s, and I had a total hip replacement in November 2009 (aged 45). My right hip has developed dysplasia too, over the years, and will need surgery eventually too.

Sophie developed dysplasia in both hips in her late 20s. She had two PAOs (periacetabular osteotomies) within a year. She is in the possibly unique position of being both a hip dysplasia patient, and an orthopeadic surgeon who carries out surgeries for the condition!

We met on the Yahoo group HipWomen. I was already planning this book, and then Sophie joined forces with me. It took us two years to research and write. I also did all the graphic design, layout, illustrations, and wrote the index (I am a trained indexer).

Sophie and I each wrote roughly half of the book each. We had three editors (Betsy, Isobel, and Ralph) who were fantastic, and each spotted errors, or made great suggestions for how we could clarify the text.

The hardest part of the book for me to write was the section about childhood surgery and trauma. I developed PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) as a result from my childhood surgeries, and having to research all this was rather confronting and difficult for me (as well as hard work, there wasn't a lot of information out there about hospital conditions in the 1960s and 1970s for children, and so on).

While I love writing, editing, and graphic design, I think the best fun for me was doing the illustrations. My daughter Jenny is the model for a lot of the drawings, I took photos of her in all sorts of positions and situations that I needed to illustrate, and used them as reference photos for my drawings. I did all the illustrations in Photoshop, using my Wacom Stylus and Drawing Pad.

One great part of this book is that 48 adult hip dysplasia patients got involved with its creation! We sent out questions to this group, and they answered them. These quotations are scattered liberally throughout the book — there are over 400 of them!

We really hope that this book becomes a great friend over any hip dysplasia patient's life — as this difficult hip condition tends to present lifetime problems. We've been as friendly and supportive as possible (as well as making sure that all our information is accurate and up to date).

A brilliant book! An absolute must have for just about anyone with hip problems, this book covers every aspect of living with hip dysplasia, but also works very well as a general book about living with hip pain and surgery.
Full of genuinely helpful advice, tips and information, this is a book you will go to again and again, and it is also invaluable when it comes to explaining issues to your friends, workmates and loved ones. The quotes by other hip patients are interesting, touching and insightful - it it so nice to read comments by people who know exactly what it feels like.

It has clear, attractive illustrations, and useful explanations - not too much detailed, not too generalised. This really is an invaluable book that I wish I had had 20 years ago!
If you or someone you know has a hip problem (particularly hip dysplasia), I urge you to buy this invaluable book - I cannot recommend it strongly enough, and you certainly won't regret it!

A Guide for Adults with Hip Dysplasia is an incredibly complete resource about hip dysplasia and its treatment in adulthood. Speaking as an adult with hip dysplasia, there isn't a single question I can think of that this book doesn't address. Not only does this illustrated book clearly explain hip anatomy and surgical treatments, it goes beyond the medical context to offer practical advice and emotional support for patients before, during, and after surgery. The authors' friendly tone and the many quotes they've included from patients who have been through treatment really bring this book to life. Thank you Denise and Dr. Sophie for writing this wonderful book. It's a welcome addition to my bookshelf.

This book is an invaluable resource for anyone who has been diagnosed with hip dysplasia. The authors managed to cover every possible detail, no doubt because they have lived through it themselves. Not only does this book provide so much useful information about the whole journey from diagnosis, surgery to post-op, but it also includes illuminating personal accounts from other "hippies" throughout each chapter. Even though this book wasn't available when I had my surgery I am so happy that it now exists.

I was diagnosed with congenital bilateral hip dysplasia and had a periacetabular osteotomy performed on my left hip in 2011, the year this book was published. When I went home after my initial diagnosis, I did a Google Search for hip dysplasia and the only thing that came up were websites about dogs with hip dysplasia. So I tried human hip dyplasia and then finally got some hits, but nothing was all that helpful. I wish I had this book before my surgery. I wasn't the least bit prepared for any part of what my recovery was going to be like. I certainly had no idea how dependent I was going to be on people taking care of me that first month when I got home from the hospital. This book would have saved me from the trial and comedy of errors that I endured during my 11 months of post-op recovery. Even having just read it now, 7 years later, I'm so happy to know this resource now exists. My hip dysplasia journey isn't over...it may never be over, but now I know at least there are others like me with similar stories.

One of the only (if not the only) books written for adults with hip dysplasia. Most other books cover babies or dogs. This useful book has practical information about treatment and coping with the impacts.

Having Hip Dysplasia myself, this book helped me through a lot including my surgery in 2014. It was very helpful with the fact that I didn't know what it was and about the surgery I had (PAO). I recommend for anyone who is going through DDH or Hip Dysplasia.
