Rodrigo Rey Rosa is perhaps the most prominent writer on the Guatemalan literary scene. Along with the work of writers like Roberto Bolaño, Horacio Castellanos Moya, and Fernando Vallejo, Rey Rosa’s fiction has been widely translated and internationally acclaimed. His books include Dust on Her Tongue, The Beggar’s Knife, and The Pelcari Project, all of which were translated into English by the late Paul Bowles. In addition to his many novels and story collections, Rey Rosa has translated books by Bowles, Norman Lewis, François Augiéras, and Paul Léautaud.

Rodrigo Rey Rosa sketches a miniature portrait of the capital of Guatemala, by means of a story of a boy who, horse riding, gets hit by a car. The word goes that the accident was provoked. In the surrounding of the car driver, one of the main characters, poverty and corruption are all around, and gathering information plus being paid for giving information seems crucial for survival, even for very young boys. The ‘enchanted stones’ of the title is the name of a youth gang. The straight-forward language of Rey Rosa about a melting pot of interests in this nice novella leave space for the imagination of the reader. JM

Це навіть не роман, а якийсь непристойно короткий конспект для політичного трилера. У святковий день на перехресті збивають маленького хлопчика. І поки придуркуватий "збивця" вмовляє друга приховати машину, поліція поступово з'ясуває, що з хлопчиком все не так просто.

Власне, це все. Маленькій текст просякнутий натяками на сюжет та сатирично-злими замальовками з гватемальської натури. Але непідв'язані кінцівки й незаряджені рушниці пурхають в повітрі з меланхолійністю жовтневих метеликів, герої хаотично змінюють одне одного, вперто зникаючи за обрієм після однієї-двох появ, атмосфера гусне і соціальні жахи міцнюють, щоби розчинитися в кризі середини молодості одного з персонажів. Правду кажете: все - тлінь. Тлінь в "Каменях" - це той цвях, що намагається тримати все у купі. З пунктирним успіхом, але яке вже є.

No hay nada como una goma mezclada con una riña innecesaria con la mujer amada para hacer de un hombre cualquiera, al menos por un momento, una persona moral. El malestar y la sensación de ser culpable por una riña que podría costarle la felicidad le hacen querer corregir, no sólo las flaquezas de la noche pasada, sino la larga serie de errores de juicio que en ese momento le parece que ha sido la historia de su vida. La lucidez alcohólica le hace ver que hasta el acto más sencillo podria ser clave para su futuro bienestar, y lo vuelve implacable
—aunque sea sólo mientras dure el mono etílico— en sus escrúpulos.

Un curieux petit roman fait de vignettes qui donnent à comprendre la vie dans la Ciudad de Guatemala. Pas aussi fantastique que le promet la quatrième de couverture, dommage ça donnait vraiment envie.

Interesante escritura. Bien innovador en cierta forma. Quizá no le guste a mucha gente. Un gusto como a Crónica de una muerte anunciada. No igual, pero con un sabor similar.

Me decepcionó este librito, eh. Esperaba más de Rey Rosa, sobre todo luego de leer hace unos años sus cuentos de Ningún Lugar Sagrado. Tanto ese como este libro los compré en mesas de saldo, el aquí reseñado por 13$ y el otro creo que por 15$ en la librería Gambito de la esquina de Puán.
Una historia con algo de color local latinoamericano, violencia, mafias, pero sin encontrar un camino narrativo que convenza. Nada cierra, pero tampoco es de "final abierto". Parece un borrador.

Muy bien escrito, con una excelente ambientación de la Ciudad de Guatemala (como la recuerdo) y un final demasiado abierto, al estilo de Bolaño, Aira o Guebel.
