In occasionally minute detail, Russel describes the economics, politics, day to day life, and exact practices of new englands farmers from the natives right before the contact, and then the three centuries beyond the first seeds planted by Europeans in new englands soil. The exact scale of the work and the products produced is mind boggling. Fascinating read. Exceptional resource for understanding what people ate, how the grew it, and what it was worth to them at the time. Encompasses not just field and cash crops but mast crops, timber, and many other natural resources as well.
