The Oregon Trail Cookbook: A Historical View of Cooking, Traveling and Surviving on the Trail

Rate this book
This cookbook is a collection of 370 recipes and remedies, some dating back to the era of the Oregon Trail. Some recipes were included in this cookbook for the purpose of historical value and are not intended to be prepared, unless you enjoy cooking over buffalo chips! However, you will find modern day versions of Dutch oven cooking, wild game, canning, pickling and handed down ethnic recipes from immigrants who traveled the trail. This is an historical view of cooking, traveling and surviving on the Trail.

Thorough and fun, I loved looking through the recipes in this book. Keep in mind that not all--probably less than half--were actually from the Oregon Trail - most just seemed like recipes from the time period rather than things they could make on the trail. I do wish that they had included notes to indicate which ones were actually made on the trail and how they were adapted accordingly. However, there is still great information and it was really interesting to read the various ingredients and methods that were discussed!
