A supplementary text book that was required reading for either an organic chemistry, botany, or physiological psychology class I took at the University of Washington in 1975, and — believe it or not — I also reread it for pleasure in 1978. A concise treatment of life's chemical reactions and mechanisms, from photosynthesis to decomposition. I had to be disciplined and force myself to understand each paragraph before proceeding, but recalled enough of my chemistry to grasp the concepts. This time it really made me think about life in new ways. All those simple chemical reactions combined in a wonderfully complex system.
