As of lifelong resident of Ohio & a resident of Columbus for the last 3 1/2 years, finding day trips away from the city seems like a good idea even though I myself have seen a good chunk of the state. From 2009 comes the 3rd edition of Sandra Gurvis "Day Trips from Columbus, Getaway Ideas for the Local Traveler" attempts to be a book that will give you ideas; however it's more hit or miss w/ things. The book itself divides itself into 7 separate sections for various directions in the state & while for the most part it hits the highlights of things you can do in these areas the book is almost a field guide to some of these cities & areas. Notably absent, however, is the Youngstown metro area which has a # of things to do along w/ the museums in Warren along with Chillicothe which is the state's first capital & home of the longest running outdoor drama in the state in Tecumseh. Also missing is the Grand Lake St Mary's region which is the largest interior lake in the state of Ohio as well as one of the most scenic byways in the state in the Land of the Crossed Tipped Churches which includes Fort Recovery. The section to the south also ignores Portsmouth & the flood mural which again is something else that is noteworthy of visiting.

The areas Gurvis does get to though are definitely worth seeing & it's nice to see mentions of places to eat in the areas and stay. I also find it a little ironic that she also on at trip east crosses the border to WV & picks up the Wheeling & Moundsville areas while ignoring the murals and Fort Steuben to the north. Overall, though, this is a book for a very novice Ohio traveler that is possibly looking for something to try to do if you haven't been there in a while.

I found this to be rather disappointing. I feel like I could have cobbled this together myself by going to a hotel and grabbing all of the "local attractions" brochures and copying the blurbs about each location.

I got a couple of suggestions for places I haven't bee before (MAPS Air Museum and Canton Classic Car Museum) but not enough to recommend this to someone looking for an Ohio adventure.

I guess I was looking for more things that are off of the beaten path and kind of odd. The Jeffersonville Outlet Malls aren't my idea of a travel destination.
