This is the script to the play Picnic. A town picnic has a gang of next door neighbors, their families, and their friends excitedly awaiting the big party when a young man of rough manner appeared. He had hoboed in on a freight train, but he was not merely a tramp. He turned out to be the fraternity brother of one of the characters and a college sports star who had come to look up his college friend.
As in other plays by William Inge (himself a recovering alcoholic), the indulgence in strong drink plays a key role in this play’s machinations as the characters search for love and for life’s purpose.
Inge was a great storyteller. The characters he created will be long remembered as archetypes.
