Il colpevole non è l'assassino, ma la vittima

Vienna, primi anni del secolo. Il giovane protagonista viene condotto al Prater dal padre che lo invita a provare il tiro al bersaglio. La palla lanciata dal ragazzo colpisce il padre in faccia: un gesto simbolico che segnerà il suo destino. Molti anni dopo infatti, diventato ufficiale, il desiderio di opporsi all'autorità e quindi alla figura paterna, lo spinge ad aderire a un piano per un attentato. Il piano fallisce, il giovane è condotto davanti al padre, confessa, viene frustato. In preda a furia omicida, aspetta il padre davanti a casa, ma non ha il coraggio di ucciderlo. A conclusione del romanzo, il protagonista, uscito di prigione, tornerà al Prater e verrà a sapere che il proprietario del tiro a bersaglio è stato ucciso dal figlio.

About the author

Czech-born poet, playwright, and novelist, whose central themes were religious faith, heroism, and human brotherhood. Franz Werfel's best-known works include The Forty Days of Musa Dagh (1933), a classic historical novel that portrays Armenian resistance to the Turks, and The Song of Bernadette (1941). The latter book had its start when Werfel, a Jew escaping the Nazis, found solace in the pilgrimage town of Lourdes, where St. Bernadette had had visions of the Virgin. Werfel made a promise to "sing the song" of the saint if he ever reached the United States. He died in California in 1945.

داستان قرار است به گونه‌ای نشان دهنده‌ی طغیان پسران علیه پدران باشد. پسران علیه پدران، کارگران علیه کارفرما‌ها، مردم علیه حکومت.
اما چرا دو ستاره؟
کتاب ارزشمند، خوب شروع میشود؛ خوب ادامه پیدا میکند؛ و خوب به پایان میرسد. سیر تغییرات داستان به جز یک شوک کوچک انتهایی که آن‌ را از تک ستاره بودن رهاند چیز دیگری نداشت.
یا بهتر بگویم پانویس ها آموزنده‌تر و جالب تر از متن کتاب بود. که به راستی هم همینطور بود.
در پایان با اینکه کتاب حرف مهم و پرتکرار عدم تحمیل عقاید پدران بر پسران را ،در این کتتب در لباس نظامی، به رشته تحریر درآورده بود اما کتابی نیست توصیه به خواندش کنم. احساس میکنم کتاب کامل‌تری با محوریت این موضوع پیدا خواهد شد.

Vater-Sohn-Konflikt in starker Überspitzung, obwohl ich natürlich nicht ausschliessen kann, dass solch ähnliche Schicksale tatsächlich der Fall waren. Eine ähnliche Hyperbel findet sich im grottigen Verhältnis der Trottas im (12 Jahre später (1932) erschienenen) Radetzkymarsch Joseph Roths, der stilistisch und im Umfange doch einiges über Werfels Roman steht - über Inspiration oder aber ein häufiges Motiv damaliger Zeit weiss ich mich allerdings nicht kundig auszusprechen.
Tatsache ist, dass Militärlaufbahnen, welche häufig über Generationen ihre Wiederholung fanden, um die Jahrhunderwende üblich waren, waren sie doch für viele eine Institution, in welcher sich ein fester Berufsweg legen liess. Dass Duschek damit nicht anzufangen weiss - er erwähnt einmal, dass die Musik seine wahre Berufung sei - und sich gegen die von seinem Vater in Wege geleitete Karriere auflehnt, eher passiv denn aktiv, lässt sich psychologisch schlüssig interpretieren. Duschek kann gegen die Härte seines Vaters nicht direkt zur Wehr setzen, also muss er zu versteckten Mitteln des Widerstands greifen, indem er seine Laufbahn durch Schlampigkeit und Regelverstösse sabotiert. Seine Angst ist ihm bewusst und gegen Schluss gelingt es ihm, sich ihr zu stellen, indem er den Vater entblösst und beinahe tötet. Im Moment der völligen Umkehrung wird ihm allerdings klar, wie schwach sein Vater eigentlich ist und er kann diesen überwinden, geht ab und lässt seine Kindheit hinter sich.
Die phantastische Episode mit den Wurfbudenfiguren, welche als lebendige Menschen einen Kreis um Duschek bilden, erinnert mich an Schnitzlers Traumnovelle. Abgesehen von diesen Episoden ist der Stil eher unschmuck und ausser wenigen Situationsbeschreibungen findet die Handlung zumeist zwischen Personen als Dialoge statt.

Weirdly it is only the first time I picked up a book by Werfel, perhaps being discouraged as my mother spoke disparaginly of him (but for a particular reason). His book excudes the atmosphere of a certain period in history in a certain part of the world (interbellum Germany/Austria) and fits in the context of Zweig, Freud and Schnitzler- the disillusionment, the disturbed relationships, the dreamlike state... In that sense it feels dated, but at the same time I would be curious to pick up another book by this author, as it does paint a picture of a culture of a very significant time in Europe . Read in Dutch (which i cannot find on this app)

Knjiga intrigantnog naziva, koja govori o veoma važnoj temi, a to je odnos oca i sina. Sin je željan ljubavi i pažnje, a ocu je stalo samo do ugleda i časti. Naime postavlja se pitanje ko je koga ubio? Ako se uzme u obzir i vremenski okvir u koji je djelo smješteno, ono ima i dublje značenje.

این کتاب سراسر حکایت دارد از پدرسالاری و مقابله با آن دارد.
کارل یک پسربچه ده یازده ساله است مرتب تحت تحقیر و فشار پدر نظامی خود قرار دارد. این بر او اثر می گذارد و ناخودآگاه در صدد است تا از فشاری که از کودکی تحت آن بوده انتقام بگیرد. تحت نفوذ و نام پدرش به مدرسه نظام می رود و افسر می شود ولی به صورت ناخودآگاه در پی تخریب اعتبار ایجاد شده توسط این لباس نظامی است. جذب یک گروه آنارشیست می شود که با مظاهر مختلف پدرسالاری در همه جا: محیط کار، دولت و غیره در جنگ است. به نظر می رسد افرادی که او را جذب این گروه کرده اند از نقطه ضعف او در ارتباط با پدرش مطلع بوده اند. آنها از او می خواهند که تزار روسیه را ترور کند.
او در بزرگسالی به طرق مختلف در پی شکستن ابهت پوشالی پدرش بوده است که اکنون به مدارج بالاتر هم رسیده است. انگار همواره می خواهد از این مجسمه ابهت برای خود پدری بیرون آورد.
در کل بنظر میرسد کارل در جامعه ای در حال رشد و گذر از نظام پدرسالاری قرار دارد.
در انتهای داستان کارل در نامه‌ای خطاب به دادستان، عامل پدرکشی خود و آگوست، پسری که در شهر بازی پدر خود را به قتل رسانده بود را در نقشی که پدران آنها در آموزش خشونت و قتل از کودکی به آنها داشته اند می داند و طبق یک ضرب المثل آلبانیایی می گوید: قاتل نه، مقتول مقصر است!

Father-sons realtionships are not always easy.
If the children are not able to meet the expectations of ambitious fathers, the relationships are likely to crack even more.
Moreover, military life, so standardized and impervious to feelings in this specific case, makes it even more murky.
The son finds only too late the strength to oppose the severity of his father, with disastrous consequences.

The book talks about a sad story but is lacking in giving meaning to the story itself, which thus remains a mere novel that passes without saying much

Nell'eterno scontro tra generazioni, tra vecchio e nuovo, inflessibilità e cambiamento, autorità e soggezione, il parricidio (in senso figurato) diventa azione universalmente necessaria da parte del figlio per emanciparsi dal padre.
Non senza amore e compassione.
