Lips of honey and eyes of fire. Armani Nnandi was always the good girl.
She was always the girl with the perfect grades, the one who never broke the rules and almost never went out. She thrived off of academic validation always striving for the top spot and nothing less. Her parents expected nothing less of perfection from her and she'd always known it, what kind of daughter would she be if she were to ever let them down?
But what happens when she gets cast away to one of the most prestigious art academies in France all on her own, no parents, no rules and all the freedom she could've ever asked for. But rumor has it that something’s not quite right at St Kathrines, that there’s doors opening past midnight, pathways that lead to nowhere and hushed secrets. Armani is about to learn that sometimes the skeletons hidden in one’s closet tend to resurrect.
Armani made herself and her parents one simple promise, no boys until after college. But that was until she found herself entangled in the beautiful chaos that was her art class rival River Kennedy. It was clear that he was one of God's favorites, with silvery blue eyes and looks that could kill—he was art. But every masterpiece has a story behind it, and River's happened to be crashing into him and drowning him all at once.
I have so many mixed feelings about this book. The premise was so promising and I was literally so excited to start this.
I tried to like it. I tried really really hard. But eventually I had to stop lying to myself and admit that this is an extremely inconsistent book. I haven’t read the original version of Chasing River, but I tell which parts the writer edited and which ones she didn’t. There were parts that were poetic and beautiful and a few quotes I like. But for the better part the writing was mediocre at best. The side characters were so underdeveloped and so many conversations felt so generic. Like the characters meet and they’re besties the next minute??
The first half the book there was no development, whether it be the friendships between the characters or River and Armani’s relationship. Their relationship in particular did, thankfully, get much better later on, and I have to admit they were adorable. I loved River too, his character was my favourite but when we were introduced to the fact that there was a hidden secret among the friend group, it felt so sudden and rushed. Like one minute we’re finding out that the characters have kept a secret, and the next few pages Armani and River are already arguing about it. Like please we’re not even 10% in, let the true gravity of the stakes settle in you’re not even trying to make it sound like the secret was something big.
The book is pitched as an academic rivals to lover but it doesn’t feel like that either, there were literally only two scenes where they seemed to be competing. The book didn’t remotely focus on that. The writing style was basic and fell flat through most of the book, the parts that did feel poetic and well written were mainly a few scenes towards the end and some of the dialogues, which is why they didn’t feel like they fit into the book. Fancy and poetic dialogues in contemporary books with clearly immature characters just come off as cringe and pretentious.
The book didn’t feel like it was edited properly, and I felt like I was reading the first draft.
The second part of the book was much better thank god. Once River and Armani got through most of their issues and had established a proper relationship, I admit I really enjoyed all the scenes about them. River’s backstory broke me, and I can’t tell you how much I appreciate the bisexual representation. It really fleshed out his character and Armani supporting him throughout the bad and the ugly was honestly really sweet. Their relationship felt genuine and I was rooting for them every chapter. The academic pressure Armani was in and the complexity of her relationship with her parents was something I could understand. The secret Keomi and Fabian kept could’ve been foreshadowed before do it didn’t feel so sudden and random, but took me by surprise nonetheless. I really appreciated the mental health rep too, because River’s anxiety attack and insomnia are things I know all too well.
All in all, I can’t say I had a bad time with this book, but there just so many flaws when it came to the writing that I couldn’t let it slide. I would still recommend it. But the writing just wasn’t for me.
I will not be rating the book because I don't want to lower its average rating. I feel like the book has a lot of potential, but there were flaws (and I will talk about them below), but it doesn't feel good adding a low rating to it, as well.
beware of spoilers:
In the acknowledgments the author mentions that she wrote the book at 13, and published it at 17, and this unfortunately is evident when reading the book. The story is a bit cliché, which in itself is not a bad thing and I believe the author still managed to make it interesting, but it does feel juvenile. We have the usual traumatized hero who’s initially an asshole and almost borders on bully at the beginning (listen, the comment about the scholarship really bothered me, okay?). He does get a lot better as the story progresses, so I'll give him that. I'm not sure what adjectives to use to describe Armani to be honest, but while I liked her as a character and liked reading about her struggles with her family or how she wasn't sure if what she was doing was for herself or for her parents, most of her choices and behavior (especially the ones related to the friend group) just annoyed me immensely and even felt unnecessarily naive or stupid at times. This book also has some very corny lines that make no sense being sentences said by 17/18/19 years old gen z people. They especially felt very out of place because most of the time they actually speak like teens, and then they suddenly come out with some weirdly dramatic sentences for poetic effect.
Some parts of the story were very repetitive and confusing. The side characters repeat to Armani the same thing about Jace dying and River being distant like four or five times, and they always approach it as if it was their first time telling her— and Armani does keep reacting like she’s hearing it for the first time. One day the friends are being upset about River being distant and Armani says “oh you have to understand he’s just grieving” and then the next time they switch roles and Armani is upset about his cold behavior and they’re like “oh he’s just sad and grieving”, and then they keep going on with switching again. It felt as if the author didn't know which of the characters to have as understanding of River's situation. It also felt odd how everyone already told her about Jace when they were all together, and then every time she’s alone with just one of them they go “something happened but I shouldn’t talk about it”, while in reality they have already told her. I don’t understand if the author herself forgot that part or if it’s meant to be this confusing.
At one point there’s an exhibit and Armani decides to submit the same painting that got her the scholarship because she didn’t have time to paint anything new despite having already been at the Art Academy for like two months. And then she even gets upset when she loses and cries that “she worked her ass off”. Hm, no girl. You literally didn’t even try for this one exhibit.
In the scenes of Armani trying to comfort River, she uses sentences like “it’ll all in your head” and “you’re overreacting” and I can tell that the author actually meant those to come off as comforting, but they actually just sound dismissive and very unhelpful and take away a lot of meaning from those scenes.
Last, but not least, there was an incredible amount of Harry Potter references (this is a queer book published in 2023...). There are four HP references in a conversation with the roommates at 23%, a JKR mention at 43%, and two casual HP references at 56%.
Final thoughts: Overall it was actually an enjoyable read and despite its flaws and its length it never bored me, but the book needed a lot of editing, because other than the confusing and repetitive parts, there were also a lot of mistakes (including formatting errors, like random capitals letters for example, or commas at the end of sentences instead of periods). I will probably read the next books by this author because, again, the story was interesting and I see a lot of potential in this author. She's just young and I think that's the only real problem here. She has time to grow and I believe in her.

(DNF) I’m actually getting nauseous from just looking at the title. Idk who decided to publish this book but they should be fired. the only reason I read this book was bcs of one TikTok abt it (first and last time I trust booktokers) and the same person kept showing up on my fyp w like scenes from this book so I decided to read it, TURNS OUTTTT THAT PERSON WAS LITERALLY THE AUTHOR LIKE GIRL???? i wanna sue her for false advertisement. She kept showing up on my fyp and let’s just say there’s one more person in my blocklist now
dnf'd like 60% through bc what was that, so so so bad, istg this is the last time i trust booktok, i want to sue for false advertisement, you can totally tell this book was written by a 13yr old, ive read wattpad with more depth.
I didn't know this book was from Wattpad but it should just stay on Wattpad. I was really excited to read this book but the main characters are just so insufferable. The male MC literally threatened the female MC with a pencil in one of their first encounters. Like what are you? Freaking John Wick? And the FMC. I get that art people can get obsessed easily and she obsessed with the MC, okay. But why did you demand to know the friend group secret so much like that? When they made it very clear they don't want to talk about it anymore. And within 2 days of knowing each other, the friend group decided to make the FMC their new important bestie. Bro, why a secret when you just lash it out to people you know for 2 days? I was cringing so hard and decided to stop reading this book when the FMC decided to cut her self with a steak knife in front of the MC on their THIRD encounter. Seriously, insufferable!

Sooo bad. The writing was poorly edited, if at all, and the book was so full of tropes it’s like that’s all there was. It was written like it was supposed to be deep, but ended up falling flat. The characters were also very one dimensional, and the romance felt really random and wasn’t developed at all. They hardly knew each other, and then suddenly they had these deep feelings for each other. I couldn’t read past 43%. Also, this was pitched as an academic rivals to lovers book, but it really wasn’t. The premise was really good, but didn’t deliver. This was the fast fashion version of a book, and such a tiktok-esque type of thing.
2.5 stars Okay! Let's get into it I was actually looking forward to reading this, especially after learning the author was young and self published. However, several issues took away from my enjoyment of the book.. 1. This was touted as Academic Rivals..Um, there was no rivalry whatsoever. Armani was an obsessed, spineless weirdo from the very beginning 2. She felt verry entitled to the secrets of River and the friendgroup. Of course they're are not going to tell a girl they've known two seconds their entire life story 3. I could tell that the author was trying really hard to sound poetic by stringing together flowery words. Unfortunately, the end results were awkward, nonsensical sentences that would have been better expressed in simpler terms. 4. Contradictory events . Her Mom accepted River with teary eyes at the end of their visit, only for her to revert to witchy mom the next time she was mentioned ?? 5. My Last petty issue... the nicknames.. Fabien as Fabes?? Why shorten an already short Keomi to Ke.. what is a Ke?
Despite all these, I still believe the author has a lot of potential and will only get better from here
- Academic rivals to lovers - Boarding school - Found family - Mystery - Grumpy x sunshine
Chasing River is a dark academia romance that takes place at a boarding school in Paris. The book revolves around Armani Nnandi and River Kennedy. Armani gets a scholarship to St Katherines Academy of Fine Arts, one of the most prestigious art academies in all of France and it’s there she gets to known River who already attends the school. Armani is immediately taken by River and his mysterious being. They start out as academic rivals but that quickly becomes more as they surrround themselves with each other and can never seem to stay away from each other.
But Armani notices from almost the get go that something’s off with River and the friend group she’s quickly becoming a part of it. There’s definitely secrets hiding in the walls of St Katherines.
The academic rivals to lovers trope is the most prominent trope in this book and it’s done so well. It’s definitely one of the best romance books I have read that revolves around that trope and the mystery element of the book also makes it a book you just can’t seem to put down. This book was just SOOOOOO GOOD. Both Armani and River are two so interesting characters and if you ask me I would call them soulmates in every way possible. During the first part of the book River can easily seem a bit offish in the way that he prefers to keep to himself and he likes to pretend he can’t stand Armani but that’s not the truth. River’s probably the person who’s most mesmerized by Armani and everything she does.
This book also deals a lot with grief, different kind of family dynamics and the hardships that a young African woman such as Armani goes through. I really love all the representation in the book, while I can’t relate to any of the stuff she goes through, it’s been very enlightening for me to read this book and gosh I just adore Armani and her story. Munema is just such an amazing writer and you can really feel that she loves this story so passionately. River’s story of mental health was also so prominently featured in the book and I truly loved that too. Mental health representation is for me personally so important and if a book has that element to it then I’m sold.
Thank you so much Munema for sending me an ARC of this beautiful story.
dnf i did not like this book and i really really wanted to but it was just. nkt good. first of all it’s marketed as academic rivals to lovers when they’re rivals for maybe two chapters. the plot was horribly written the characters were all really underdeveloped. the dialogue was mid and the only half decent writing were any scenes with river and armani and even those got annoying because armani was so annoying and river had no actual personality traits other than being the dark brooding mysterious bad boy like this book was just a bunch of stereotypes and tropes pulled together in an attempt to make a book. i wish i could give it zero stars but sadly i cannot.
It’s not even academic rivals , it’s just I don’t really know you so I don’t like you to lovers
Also Armani was such a pick me ! River was plain weird and the fact that they are hiding so much about jace even though all that happened was he’s dead bro-
I get they are grieving but srsly?
Don’t read it , unless you like a slightly vague plot more focused on internal conflicted feelings over actual plot
HEY im backkkk. pov i am writing this as my cuckoo for cocoa puffs psat proctor wont let me leave. okay so many thoughts. firstly, i read this in like two sittings because it was so easy to read despite being 540 pages lol. i gave it three stars because it was nothing spectacular yk like i wasn't emotionally touched or wowed, the writing was lowkey bad and there were so many grammar mistakes LIKE HELLO ARENT YOU AN AUTHOR. OMG ALSO THE SPELLING OF A CHARACTERS NAME CHANGED HALF WAY THROUGH THE BOOK?? anyways the characters were cute the third act breakup was so expected but like the reason for it was lowkey really cool like it added so much depth to the story. but hello why were all of the characters genuinely emotionally scarred someone had mommy issues someone hadn't been home in seventeen years every character lost someone they loved it was a bit scary. ANYWAYS NOTHING SPECIAL BUT IT WAS A SUPER FUN READ AND I ENJOYED IT KK BYE
i had such high hopes for this book, and i wanted to like it so bad. but, it was just to infuriatingly antagonizing to read. the main character armani is the absolute most annoying female i have ever read about. she doesn't care for anyone but herself, and i get that she has a lot going on and everything, but that will not excuse her terribleness to other people. (SPOILER!) one of her friends liked her, but she rejected him for the male lead, and then was mad that the friend was avoiding her for like 2 days. like girl... give him some time. stop thinking the whole world revolves around you. another example was when she realized that her new friends were hiding the death of their other friend from her.. and she threw a tantrum. like please.. its none of your business about someone who you don't even know. its a personal matter and they absolutely do not need to tell you unless they feel comfortable to. in the end, i could barely finish it because armani is just this spoiled little pick-me-choose-me, who has no awareness about the people around her, and thinks that everything should go her way because boo hoo her parents set high expectations for her academically. grow up.
No real academic-rivals, no real enemies to lovers (inquietanti più che altro).
the writing was so childish. “I turned around and gave him a cocky smirk” like cmon, this isn’t the disney chanel. corny as hell.
some of the stuff seems poetic but it was actually just forced. every character was a different race- which is fine but at a point it just was like diversity quota much?
and also, why is everyone attractive ? WHY IS EVERYONE HOT ? THATS NOT HOW THE WORLD WORKS.
also WHO GREENLIGHTED THIS BOOK TO BE PUBLISHED?
it’s like something id write on wattpad if i was 12. the writer can be better if they read some good books. wish I could give it 1/2 a star.
The author really oversold her book. I came from her instagram to read this, I even read some of her stories on Wattpad before but this is not quality work. A lot of things seemed rushed and the word count in the beginning was mostly full of unnecessary poetic comparisons, I do understand that MC is an artist, but I’m also an artist and I don’t find myself automatically comparing people to God within a few days of just hearing about them. I can try to see where she was going, but the beginning had me cringing so hard.
I read and tried to like this novel,I really did but seriously,Armani gives me a constant headache. I also mainly read it for the plot twist that they talked about. Apparently what I figured out from the beginning was meant to be a plot twist. Disappointed that this was called a enemies to lovers novel for some reason.
