I am a huge fan of all things Formula One and this book gave a great insight into the life of Nigel Mansell.
He is perhaps not the most interesting or charismatic racing driver around - and indeed it appears that at times his personality and attitude leave a lot to be desired. But it cannot be denied that he is one of the more well remembered F1 champions.
His career started out fairly low key and indeed it seems most people didn't really rate him very much at all for a good portion of his early career. He was always "next best Nige" somehow. There was always somebody a little better than him.
But everyone loves an underdog and I enjoyed reading about the struggle he had to finally obtain that cherished world title. Even today - every Brit knows who Nigel Mansell is. I remember my mother telling me how she had run down the track at Silverstone after one of his wins once with the entire crowd doing the same. Course my uncle was not happy about this flagrant abuse of track rules - being a Fire Officer for the track at the time but there we go!
A good book but one which will probably not appeal to non F1 lovers. Strange to see that apparently in Detroit - Nigel is not a known name. Detroiters called him Nig-el with a hard G apparently! Strange.
