A story of personal determination, courage, triumph, and tragedy, this biography of Hall of Fame pitcher Grover Cleveland Alexander tells the tale of the man who was undeniably one of the greatest pitchers ever to take the mound, despite an ongoing battle with alcoholism and epilepsy.
I was definitely looking for more stories and less game recaps than this book provided... there's very little color in what was surely a very colorful career. The author did mention an post season all star game that took place in my home town, though, so that was exciting.
I suspect the problem was the author was trying to shed the best possible light on Alex... in that he kinda failed. There were far too many random gaps in the story that were glossed over.
On the plus side, it's definitely well researched, and provided an excellent and through career retrospective, just not much color.
