Takanaga Hinako (高永ひなこ) is a Japanese author of Boys' Love manga.
She has also provided illustrations for several BL light novels by other authors, including The Guilty by Katsura Izumi. Her first manga story, 合格祈願 (Goukaku kigan, Prayers for a passing grade?), was published by Hanamaru Comics in 1997; it was later reworked as the first chapter of Challengers. Most of her works have been translated into foreign languages. She was a guest at YaoiCon 2007, invited by Juné, the US publishers of her popular series Little Butterfly.
When not making Boys' Love manga, she spends her time collecting Wallace & Gromit merchandise and playing Final Fantasy. Takanaga doesn’t like beer and people who are ignorant.

She comments that her biggest influence on her art and writing-style was KOUGA Yun, a famous shoujo manga artist whose works she read as a teenager.

Finished this series (it may continue, the author said in the afterword). I loved the ride--it was suspenseful and... sweet baby flamingos! the SHEER ANGST! Angst on a pike!

I have a feeling Morinaga will always feel insecure and always be looking for reassurance.... Feel sorta sorry for the sap, loving a person with such low emotional IQ, especially when his is overflowing!

The art is wonderfully expressive (but the men are bizarrely skinny and a bit too female-looking), and this lady sure knows how to do page layout and manga story delivery!

Review for volumes 1-12

Takanaga Hinako has always been a hit or miss author for me; she's got a few really nice works but others are either too heavy on the comedy or graphic side. The Tyrant Falls in Love lands somewhere in between which makes it a really difficult one for me to rate. I love the characters, it's got just the right amount of humour and a nice enough story. But at the same time, there are a lot of problematic themes and a lot of the story is just contrived and dragged for the sake of adding more sexual scenes.

It's been a long time since I last read it and I remember struggling with it back then already. No matter how you twist and turn it, the story starts off with one of the main characters raping the other. Never mind that he says sorry and the other eventually accepts the apology, I just found it difficult to go along with the story knowing how it started. That being said, I do actually really like the characters, not just the main ones but also all the side cast - my favourite is probably Isogai, the seemingly only straight male character in the whole series who's just hilarious.

The story in itself is also not bad, it does raise some interesting subjects. The main issue, apart from the fact that it starts off with rape, is that I feel the story should have been wrapped up several volumes ago already. There have been several points in the story of character development where one could have drawn the line, but not only are new chapters released at a very slow pace, it mostly just feels like it is drawn out for the sake of drawing more smut. The character development keeps spiralling backwards just for the main characters to be confronted with the exact same issues. It's great that they always talk things out, but they always find themselves back at the same problem.

I really like Takanaga's art, though, but that too isn't enough to keep me reading. For a series of which I had conflicted feelings from the start, I just don't see myself waiting around for yet another volume and hoping it's the last. I've read up to 12 volumes and feel that it is time to drop this one.

“The course of true love never did run smooth.” - A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Tatsumi’s temper and Morinaga’s determination to push at his boundaries have caused a lot of friction throughout their on-again, off-again relationship. They’re part of makes this series such an exciting read; erotica with an edge of tension is a surefire tactic in the hands of an able writer.

Tatsumi still doesn’t evince any attraction to other men and remains adamant in his homophobia. For a long time, that really bothered me; it made Morinaga’s attraction to him an utter mystery. But this series makes a real case for the saying “the heart has its reasons that reason knows not of”. There is no sense to love and/or attraction; it simply is.

However, Morinaga’s determination to jump him at almost any opportunity, no matter how inappropriate (outdoors, indoors on school grounds during working hours), is put on hold here. Their first sexual interaction was just a hair short of rape; in the real world Tatsumi would have had him arrested. But this is how their relationship started and Tatsumi was left sufficiently confused by it to allow Morinaga to ease almost imperceptibly into their life.

Now Morinaga’s willingness to back off gives Tatsumi room to address his own feelings and desire for Morinaga. That doesn’t allay his temper (which is so much a part of him that you can’t really imagine him without it) or his impatience with Morinaga’s sentimentality. But it does allow for Tatsumi to admit what he feels…even if it’s in a very roundabout fashion.

The story pulls in others, each with their own opinions, observations and advice. It keeps the tale from becoming too insular and allows different viewpoints about their relationship. There’s also another sex scene but it rises organically out of Tatsumi’s growing puzzlement and frustration at Morinaga’s distance. For those who like erotica with their romance and romance with their erotica, this series finally manages to pull off both.

I've read this 3 years ago but I thought it was part of Vol. 7 I guess. And FINALLY! Vol. 9 is translated. So I "had" to re-read this manga =)

Morinaga will go to another city to study and Sempai is hurt. Of course he wants Morinaga to improve his studies, but at the same time, he is sad they will separate. Stupid Sempai starts to overreact because he doesn't know what to do with his feelings, and poor Morinaga feels rejected. Morinaga wants to give him some space and not bother him too much, but Sempai thinks Morinaga is upset and makes the first move! Yatta!

Finally Sempai gives something back. A sweet kiss <3 And then, also collaborates in the love-making! Yatta! All with blushing faces, so sweet <3

This volume had a nice ending. Souichi’s taken grand leaps in accepting Morinaga and himself. It was nice to see. And Morinaga finally starts to think more about Souichi’s feelings and what he’s gone through. It’s usually a crisis that helps shift things around when they’re this convoluted, and the two certainly went through a little crisis. Oh, confusing old love. It’s complicated sometimes; but it was nice to see these two work it out. The artwork’s good, the plot is intriguing, the drama is angsty. I’m still reading.
