I received this book and the companion book The Confederacy: Diaries, Memoirs and Letters of the Civil War. The way I read the two books was to read a chapter from one and then a chapter from the other. I have never done this with books before, but this two lent themselves to such a reading... It was fascinating... you read a perspective from one side and were maybe sympathetic to them when I would read a chapter regarding the other side... and suddenly you were more sympathetic with them. I have been a student of the Civil War for over 40 years and read hundreds of books regarding the war... but have never gained the "personal perspective" you get from the individual accounts in their "own words"... my rating has nothing to do with writing style, etc... it is based on the interest each of the segments has, the information gained from such personal insights... and an overall feeling of sadness regarding the entire 4 years that our country fought itself... I would highly recommend the books... and encourage the reader to read them in the manner I did.
