The kidnapping/pirate arc is the most exciting arc we’ve had so far in the series, and I enjoyed every second!
Raj is actually growing, amazingly enough, haha, and I’m actually warming up to him a bit. And Zen…dear Zen, he has a heart of gold and he’s so fierce and protective and I love him so much and Shirayuki is one lucky girl. 🥰 And while I’m glad Zen was honest with his brother, I’m not sure it was wise to hand him that loaded gun, so to speak. I cringe to see how this is going to turn out… 👀
Shirayuki, Obi, Mitsuhide, and Kiki continue to be amazing and even the more minor characters are growing on me the longer the series goes on.
Loved this arc and am looking forward to seeing how it all turns out! ☺️
Violence: hand to hand fighting (nothing over PG); characters are kidnapped and knocked out; character is held at knife point; a character is tortured by being nearly drowned (not shown beyond him being hauled out of the water—PG); a man is stabbed in the chest and presumably killed (nothing over PG); a character is cut on the cheek
Sexual: a woman wears a skimpy outfit
Drug/Alcohol: a sedative is used to knock a character out
Shirayuki's naturally bright-red hair has gotten her into a lot of trouble forcing her to flee to the neighboring kingdom... but fortunately it allowed her to meet the prince of Clarines, Zen! Thus starts a friendship between a most unusual herbalist and a lovestruck prince.
Shirayuki is back in her home country on a diplomatic mission for Zen’s brother. She can’t mess this up! Unfortunately there are greater forces at work trying to trip her and by extension, Zen, up. I really enjoyed this volume. It was way more action oriented then Snow White with the Red Hair usually is and it made for a nice change. I liked how Zen went toe to toe with his big brother to take that action.
This time we see some mega action from two other characters that made for a fun volume. They don’t normally take such an active role so it was an unexpected turn of events. I wasn’t surprised Shirayuki took the tactic she did with her kidnapper, it was only what I expected. Still everything was a lot more twisty than Snow White with the Red Hair usually is, which was nice.
This is a really fun and swashbuckling volume for a series that makes for a sweet and enjoyable romance.
Contains Chapters 22 - 25: This was a really good volume that a lot happened in. We find out who was looking for Shirayuki when they show up and manage to kidnap her leaving Obi knocked out. Then someone else kidnaps her from the kidnappers. Zen and Raj team up and go after her and the volume leaves off in the middle of the rescue mission but after they find Shirayuki. I look forward to reading the next volume.
Sooooo many great things about this volume that I'm not even sure what is my favorite part! Well, I would confess that I LOVED the villainess in this one because she is fierce and can kick butt! Despite the intensity of the situation, I thought her very awesome and couldn't turn the pages fast enough!
I was shocked at how much I really came to like Prince Raj in this one! Shirayuki is an AMAZING influence on him and we see that unfold throughout with each new situation he's in or faced with. I felt like a proud mom by the end because that is some excellent character development! Hoping he'll be sticking around because I've really liked what I've seen in him! Also, I LOVE his aide! He's hilarious and way too on point! LOL!
There were quite a few moments where Zen looked VERY fierce, but can we all take a moment to appreciate that one panel where he was in disguise? Goodness, I would have LOVED Shirayuki to see him in that moment! LOL! Also that ending with him was perfection!! Zen is definitely not the same young man he was in the beginning and LOVED what he told his brother in this one because that man needs to be knocked down a peg or two! YOU GO RESCUE YOUR WOMAN!
Poor Shirayuki though! She's really been through a lot in this volume! I continue to deeply admire her strength though! She does her best to say calm and I think she really excelled because I would have been a hot mess times ten if I had been in her shoes! (Also I REALLY loved how she has been encouraging Prince Raj as one of his citizens and telling him she can't wait to visit again to see how proud the kingdom will be of him. *cries*)
And poor Obi too! My heart really went out to him! He's got this though! <3
Overall, this is hands down my favorite volume yet! When I started this series I never expected it to get so intense! A nice pleasant surprise and now I need to start the next volume ASAP!
Shirayuki and Zen are so adorable, they had some wonderful moments in this volume. I also really enjoyed the pirate arc and the interactions that the characters had. Also the fact that it ended off on a cliffhanger makes me super excited for the next volume. This was such a fun volume, and I’m excited to read the next one. (5 stars ⭐️)
I finished this much earlier this year, so my rating may be just an estimate of this particular volume. I enjoy this series very much, with most volumes falling in the 4 to 5 star bracket.
This volume was full of frill, glamor, and bite. As multiple friendships with Shirayuki blossom, so does her relationship with Zen. It seems that their relationship has set sail (pun intended) as these high stakes only serve to bring them all the closer to each other, coupling with the act that Zen proclaims to his brother, Izana, when defending his actions toward Shirayuki that he intends to someday take her as his wife. Nothing in this volume made my heart race more than the moment they were reunited and the brief moment they spent immediately after (and how Zen reacts to this entire situation, especially as his anger swells toward the guilty party). However, romance aside, Shirayuki’s relationships with those around her also blossom in ways I like to see. She acts like sunshine and fertilizer to those around her, inspiring them to do better and then helping them to grow. But then I also see a very human, normal relationship between her and Obi. He isn’t inspired by her or anything of the like for the most part. He simply treasures her, as one would treasure a woman whom they dearly love or admire. I also like how her and Raj have developed a bond, as well as how Raj has grown so magnificently. His growth excites me and he’s become a character I truly care for and would pay to see more of regularly than we had before. Lastly, the relationship between the Lions and the Claws are interesting and exciting as well, in addition to Tanbarun’s political climate with these groups. I’m interested to see more about Tanbarun’s politics. I’m hope that this journey helps Raj in all sorts of ways. Shows his people he’s better than he was/they thought he was, he learns some lessons and becomes more connected with his people and more driven at the very least, etc.
And Kazuki… I think this trip served to wake him up too. He certainly acted before he really thought things through.
I have a lot more to say, but I can’t think of the words.

A lot of action and emotions in this volume! I honestly love the pirate arc so much!
Plus we get see more of Prince Raj's growth and Obi's changing feelings. And more importantly, Zen becoming absolutely protective over Shirayuki was also a great touch. I love how they're growing closer with each volume!
"Snow White with the Red Hair" is fantasy-type manga that takes place in a faraway kingdom. At the beginning of the tale, Shirayuki wants to become an herbalist, but the prince of Tanbarun is planning to make her his concubine! She makes a run for it and encounters Zen, the second prince of the nearby kingdom of Wisteria. Zen helps her escape from her plight and escorts her to his kingdom, where she becomes a full-fledged court herbalist. The rest of the story follows their adventures together (and apart!) as they develop deeper feelings for one another and work to overcome the gap between their social stations.
What impressed me the most about this story was how balanced the characters were. Often, characters are written with extreme characteristics and stereotypes. While this can be funny and distinctive, it can also get old after a while. It was refreshing to see that Shirayuki wasn’t a helpless princess, nor was she refusing assistance. She certainly did want to do things for herself and on her own, but she wasn’t above accepting help when she needed it. Even Zen, despite his stubbornness and rule-flouting tendencies, didn’t just rush off to do whatever he wanted all the time. Instead, he faithfully played the role of prince and followed his duty rather than his emotions.
Personally, I find it so much easier to connect with a character who knows how to flex and adapt as their situation changes. Plus, it was so exciting to see these characters build their relationship the “right way,” by working through the rules and customs of their world so they could perform the roles they’d been given to the best of their abilities.
Shirayuki is preparing for the ball the kingdom of Tanbarun is hosting when she is kidnapped. Zen hears of the threat before the event and is on his way with his guards to trail her soon after the event. But then Shirayuki and one of the kidnappers is kidnapped by another group. Who wants them so badly and why?
Well, that was a lot of twists and turns for one manga. Shirayuki manages to keep her head and even has compassion for her kidnappers when some are injured. That's why everyone loves her. Zen and the guards are the heroes we expect them to be. And the Prince of Tanbarun shows how far he's come in his character growth by how he responds to events.
Notes on content: Language: About 7 minor swears, 1 strong use of profanity, and 3 moderate swears. Sexual content: None Violence: There's 2 battles, but no one is fatally hurt and only minor wounds sustained. Ethnic diversity: Imaginary kingdom with made up cultures. LGBTQ+ content: None specified Other: Some objectifying of people for their looks.
Akiduki has some exceptionally lovely panels in this volume that have translated well even in black and white. The anime did add a couple of details that gave Shirayuki more agency, but overall this is a manga (and anime) series that does an excellent job of showing a variety of "strong female characters" without relying on all the women being excellent at physically kicking @ss. Shirayuki *is* in danger and a kidnapping victim in this volume, and she reacts realistically to the trauma without ever becoming passive. She's ready to be an ally in her own rescue, and that's really powerful. This is a series you could confidently hand to a tween or teen without worrying that it's going to portray a toxic romance as romantic.
Only notes: in a few places, the anime did it better, and Zen needs to stop kissing anyone when they're asleep, even his love interest who clearly reciprocates his feelings.
4.5 *Review of Volumes 4-6* Ohhhhhh mannnnn. Zen and Shirayuki are wayyyy too adorable. I have an unhealthy obsession with them now. Akiduki sensei please put Obi out of his misery and get him a different love interest. I love Obi to bits but why he gotta be miserably in love with Shirayuki.
We are still on the pirate arc, as I like to call it. And for the most part, I like to focus on how this is when Raj gets his big-time to shine as a person who grew to learn that platonic love and family is important to him as well as the country he is supposed to be leading one day. He has come to a point where the main thing he wants is for people to be proud of him because no one was before.
Kiki is a heavy player in this game; she's the one who gets in and can be there emotionally for Shirayuki while she is being held captive and doesn't think she's ever going to see her family again. She's the backbone of Zen's aides.
I love this! Shirayuki and Zen are adorable, I just can’t. Honestly, people after this poor girl because of her apple red hair is beginning to annoy me. Get over it, people. Let her be. I can kinda understand Kazuki’s reasoning for taking her away, but what a wrong way to go about it. Good on Shirayuki for being a good sport, though. The pirate story line is interesting, but that bitch got on my nerves. I’m starting to like Obi even more now and also I’m starting to like Raj surprisingly, since when we’re first introduced to him, he wasn’t a nice guy. Hopefully, this continues.
Obi is so cute when he calls Shirayuki my lady and Kiki princess Kiki. I started to develop an affection towards Obi and l don’t want to see him heartbroken though. He’s Hak from Yona of the Dawn but a more amusing version!
This pirate arc is surely a lot more interesting than the former ones until now but seeing Shirayuki desperately waiting for Zen to rescue her felt like she’s not a bit being her older self from the story. I know the author wants to make Zen look more like protective and fierce but it still feels a bit off to me though seeing she’s changed.
Overall, the art 5⭐️ characters 4.5 ⭐️ plot 4⭐️ and the author’s sidebars are as interesting as always haha
The once enemy princes come together! (Not just on the cover but also in a mission to rescue Shirayuki and defeat some pirates!) As I said in the last one Shirayuki cannot catch a break-this continues. Not only did she have to leave her training as a court herbalist to go visit the neighboring kingdom with her old...suitor? kidnapper? Well while visiting him she gets kidnapped! TWICE! double kidnapped as she says. And okay I'm finally starting to trust Obi he didn't betray her when I thought he would (there was a moment I figured would have been the time) but he hasn't! So hooray! We can like OBI! On to the next!
short series review: In this complete overhaul of the Snow White fairytale, the "princess" is a herbalist with flaming red hair. One prince is demanding that she become his mistress, the other is the one who falls for the poisoned apple. That's just the start of their story. This series is like the best of all the Disney Princess movies wrapped up into one, with none of the awkward musical numbers... and all of the strong girls who know how to take care of themselves.
