"Sometimes I think I am Judy Moody," says Megan McDonald, author of the Judy Moody series, the Stink series, and THE SISTERS CLUB. "I'm certainly moody, like she is. Judy has a strong voice and always speaks up for herself. I like that."
For Megan McDonald, being able to speak up for herself wasn't always easy. She grew up as the youngest of five sisters in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Her father, an ironworker, was known to his coworkers as "Little Johnny the Storyteller." Every evening at dinner the McDonalds would gather to talk and tell stories, but Megan McDonald was barely able to get a word in edgewise. "I'm told I began to stutter," she says, leading her mother to give her a notebook so she could start "writing things down."
Critically acclaimed, the Judy Moody books have won numerous awards, ranging from a PUBLISHERS WEEKLY Best Book of the Year to an International Reading Association Children's Choice. "Judy has taken on a life of her own," the author notes, with nearly 3 million Judy Moody books in print. Interestingly, the feisty third-grader is highly popular with boys and girls, making for a strong base of fans who are among Megan McDonald's strongest incentives to keep writing, along with "too many ideas and a little chocolate." And now -- by popular demand -- Judy Moody's little brother, Stink, gets his chance to star in his own adventures! Beginning with STINK: THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING KID, three more stories, and his own encyclopedia, STINK-O-PEDIA, Stink's special style comes through loud and strong -- enhanced by a series of comic strips, drawn by Stink himself, which are sprinkled throughout the first book. About the need for a book all about Stink, Megan McDonald says, "Once, while I was visiting a class full of Judy Moody readers, the kids, many with spiked hair à la Judy's little brother, chanted, 'Stink! Stink! Stink! Stink! Stink!' as I entered the room. In that moment, I knew that Stink had to have a book all his own."
More recently, Megan McDonald has recalled some of her own childhood with the warmth, humor -- and squabbles -- of three spunky sisters in THE SISTERS CLUB.
Megan McDonald and her husband live in Sebastopol, California, with two dogs, two adopted horses, and fifteen wild turkeys that like to hang out on their back porch.
A festive, colorful read with some magic courtesy of Jack Frost. ❄
J and I enjoyed reading this together as we look forward to Christmas. When we finished this morning I totally forgot to compare favorite chapters.
My favorite was "A Parrot in a Palm Tree." The kids at Virginia Dare School give a festive and colorful program to celebrate the season. While Judy's class celebrates Hawaiian style, Stink has a surprise for everyone when it is his turn to play a mouse in "The Night Before Christmas."
The Judy Moody & Stink series is a wonderful complement to the Judy Moody books. So much color and all the humor in a slightly smaller package. 🌲🎁
I have lived in Virginia my whole life, and I can say that, in all my years, we've only had two white Christmases: 1999 and 2010. There have been some other holiday seasons that were affected by winter weather, though, such as an ice storm on Christmas Eve 1998 that knocked out power all over our area, or a big blizzard that dumped over a foot of snow on our city the day after Christmas. The latter storm formed so suddenly, even the local meteorologists couldn't predict it in time.
Nothing mind bending but a lot of fun and my 6 yr old loved it and requested me to find as many as I could at the library. As long as he's reading and wanting to read, I'm happy.
The third book, and this time it is Christmas! Will it bring snow, or will it be a typical winter for where our duo lives?
I have to say that I feel sorry for Stink, I know the feeling of wanting snow for Christmas. Judy is more like my boyfriend, he doesn't particularly want it. :P So I was on Stink's side this time, though I have to say I also liked Judy and what she did (Hawaiian party plus some songs). But I mostly just wanted the snow to fall. It doesn't happen here that often, OK, if ever, that snow falls on or around Christmas.
We also have Jack Frost, though I just guess it was the mailman. Unless the author suddenly decided to add a magical element to the mix, but that would be a bit weird considering she never did that in any of her other books.
We also have a holiday show, and I have to say that I didn't like what Stink did in that one. I do hope that he did get some sort of punishment, otherwise I can just see that everyone is going to copy him when they are boohooing about their role. I did love Judy's show, especially the parrot part.
I had a snicker at the fact that Judy just made her wishlist on toilet paper. I wonder why her parents didn't tell her to just keep it to x number of presents. And not write down all the stuff in the entire world.
Oh, and I just noticed, but with the events in the book the title suddenly makes much more sense, and I appreciate it more!
All in all, a very Christmassy book, not exactly the right time any more, but who knows, maybe in December I will be re-reading this one right in time for Christmas. And then I will hope even more for a white Christmas.
I already said what I wanted to say about the illustrations in the other book's reviews. I love them, but I am sad that they aren't full colour because ereaders. :P
All Stink wants for Christmas is snow. Unfortunately, Stink lives in Virginia, and while there is sometimes snow at Christmas, the odds are against it. Judy knows this, and Judy is a little worried on Stink's behalf. As we go though the last few days before Christmas, we meet a mailman named Jack Frost (?!), make it through the school Holiday Festival, and get right up to Christmas Eve, when Judy decides to make Stink's wish come true.
A cute story about creating magic for the ones we love. I'm not surprised the girls both love this. We've had a lot of snowflakes up on our walls and windows over the years.
A sweet little Christmas tale of Judy Moody and her brother Stink. Christmas is coming and Judy is busy practicing for her Hawaiian Christmas concert and writing her present list but all Stink wants is NOT to be the mouse in the play AND for it to snow on Christmas Day. Will they both get what they want? According to their new mailman who gave them some mystery snow mittens in a parcel the weather forecast is looking decidedly snowy and festive! A cute story with adorable illustrations throughout. Perfect for reading aloud.
So far we haven't had much luck finding read aloud books where the sibling relationship strikes a more reasonable tone, but finally this one shows two siblings who don't always agree, who tease each other, but have a much firmer underlying sense of care and compassion for one another.
I really like the Stink and Megan books, even though I'm in my 60's, and my kids are now adults. Since I'm working on a couple of kid's books myself, I'm reading widely in an attempt to learn as much as I can about the genre, and these strike me as very well-done.
The stories are good, funny, engaging.
The illustrations are just perfect---like a textbook illustration of how it should be done.
So, honestly, I'm reading the books not as a kid or parent (since my kids are adults now), but as a self-educating writer, but I'll tell you the truth---I'm enjoying them!
This book was about Stink wanting snow for Christmas but it hadn't snowed there in more than 100 years. The setting was Virginia. This book was funny. The best part was when Stink got his Christmas wish. The wish was snow. Here are three interesting words I found in this book: dendrite, yule, and stellar. I would tell my friends to read this book.
Growing up, I absolutely loved the Judy Moody books. It's fun to go back and re-read them as an adult as well as read some of the spin-off series like this one for the first time.
In this holiday-themed book, Stink wishes for snow while Judy is caught up celebrating in Hawaiian style. A cute read filled with clever songs, silly antics, and of course a bunch of puns. Nice short chapters written in an engaging narrative. On top of that, I loved seeing Judy and Stink's adventures come alive in full color with the fun illustrations. It's been great seeing how the original series grows and develops.
A nice read to get in the holiday spirit and a good start to the series focused on the Moody siblings.
Tis the Christmas season, and all Stink wants is for it to snow. According to the new mailman Jack Frost, it snowed over 13 and a half inches in one day back 1980. This bit of information gives Stink some hope and he keeps his fingers crossed for a white Christmas. Judy does something to surprise Stink while he sleeps on Christmas Eve, but the biggest surprise is when they wake on Christmas Day.
Judy and Stink are celebrating the holiday season! Judy and Stink both participate in their school's Christmas performance though Stink isn't all that excited about his part in his class' contribution to the performance. Also, Stink is hoping for snow on Christmas and Judy's pretty pessimistic about that happening. The book is short and relatively entertaining though not one of the best in the series.
First, I should warn you that if Christmas is in the book I will love it. I love the magic of Christmas. This book was wonderful. Here are the things I didn’t like it: the by’s name is Stink. :( They lost the impact of the kind gesture of Judy Moody, Judy moody kindly stays up and cuts up snow flakes for her brother. I love that it snowed, but I felt the story could have ended with joy in my heart the moment the sister cut the snowflakes.

Christmas fun for Judy Moody and her brother Stink. In Virginia it does not usually snow but Stink really wants a white Christmas. After the Hawaiian themed Christmas school play and loads of holiday activities, the Letter carrier (Jack Frost) delivers some wonderful surprises. My favorite part of this book was when the Moody family hung paper snowflakes on the ceiling for Stink to find. Enjoy.
This is a delightful story with brother-sister banter over Stink's one wish for Christmas - Snow. A new mailman shows up with a perfect name, Jack Frost. The elementary school puts on a varied Christmas program for the parents. Will Stink get his wish?
This is a fun read and the illustrations are absolutely beautiful and festive. The cover is rich and layered with sparkle.
Delightful new series for Juna with nice, caring characters, and family, all with a delicious sense of humor as Stink’s pet mouse and friends try to find out what Stink’s secret about the Holiday concert is and destroy all the scenery and then try to make it right. Fun and well written too.
This was a really good book! I reread it for some nostalgia, and so I could get some extra pages read. Its about the school talent show, nd how Stink meets Jack Frost. Really brought me back to when I was younger.

basically my favorite christmas book growing up, and since christmas never really feels like christmas, it was nice to find escapism in these cute drawings and witty banter. judy & stink i love u forever💖💖💖
I like that when Stink wanted it to snow and they were trying to stay up on Christmas Eve when I think he was dreaming about snow and Judy put up fake snow to make him happy. But then there really was actually snow - real snow- in the morning.
It was great and it was about how Judy and Kimo/stink went outside with they’re hats and coats and scarfs on then enjoyed the white Christmas Eve Christmas is the best 🎅🏾 🎄 ⛄️ ❄️ ❄️ ❄️ ☃️🌨️
This book sadly completely missed the true meaning of Christmas while offering up a lot of poor substitutes. A worldly "holiday" show at the kids' school, and the only reference to our Savior in a hymn that the dad quickly dismisses.
