The book was published in 1959, it is old and moldy. I sneezed every time I opened the damn thing and felt itchy after a few pages. It certainly has a lot of character that matches its intended message.
After the Forgotten war in Korea many prisoners of war were repatriated and psychologically analyzed. During their imprisoned tenure, these soldiers incurred in activities that rejected their own beliefs and on top of embracing the enemy rhetoric, these soldiers propagated pro communist propaganda via radio and even on the letters to their families.
Its was during this war that America faced off against communist enemy in North Korea and China. Korea handling of the prisoners was straightforward humiliate and kill. It was during the Chinese intervention that a change in tactics was observed, prisoners were greeted with a handshake and a cigarette. It was at this moment that the rules of the game changed because the American men were not expecting this change.
Throughout this book, the anti communist agenda really jumps out of the pages. Which is understandable due to the timing of the publishing and the support from the armed forces toward the publishing of this material. Soldiers broke rank and betrayed their country men. Several court martial orders were issued and imprisonment as a result of the behavior of the soldiers. In similar fashion to Viktor Frankl’s A man search for meaning, soldiers were the source of punishment and harsh treatment.
The army in particular is admitting not having trained its soldiers enough on the psychological aspects of being imprisoned by a communist enemy. Special considerations of indulging in philosophical and political discussions with their captors which was a big element of the indoctrination process. “Talking is always the first step toward collaborating.”
An adapted code of conduct was issued as a result of the interviews with the released American captives. Article 5 of the code states that a prisoner when questioned is bound to give only his name, rank, service number, and date of birth. Leadership and structure under duress was one of the main reasons that soldiers broke rank and collaborated. The Army now realizes that a man's prior knowledge of a situation in which he could be placed may eventually be absolutely necessary for his survival; and the Army's training program now provides men with this information.
I can picture how these events led to the sleeper agent terminology and Manchurian candidate movie. Some soldiers were given missions after their release that would incur in waiting seven years to carry the instructions out.
I ordered this book while reading the book Games People Play by Eric Berne.
I love propaganda. I ordered a book from the perspective of the Chinese about the Korean War.
