Worth the Wait

If everybody's doing it, shouldn't you?

Sometimes the pressure to give in can be overwhelming. For a young high school football star, he can think of nothing else. Sex is foremost in his mind, not just because he wants to do it but because he isn't. He doesn't want to give in, but he doesn't want to risk losing his boyfriend by saying no. He wants to do it, he does. But he's afraid. If they love each other, isn't that enough?

Just because everyone else thinks it's time doesn't mean he has to give in. Or does it? Sometimes respecting someone's decision -- even one you don't like -- says more about the love you share than words ever could.

This is an interesting little young adult story. It’s all told from the first person perspective of he unnamed narrator, a young man with his first boyfriend. As the blurb says, everyone’s doing it, his boyfriend, a year older wants to do it, HE wants to do it. So why does he back out every time they get close?

I think for those of us who can throw our minds way back to those days of our own youth, it truly captures that moment when you are making that decision. Maybe for some it’s easy, and when our narrator asks his best friend and even his sister for advice, they all seem to be of the “what’s the big deal” school of thought. But he just can’t. He’s got all that seventeen year old angst going on. Will his boyfriend find a guy who will do it. Maybe he just needs his boyfriend to “make” him do it and then he’ll be over it. Oh thankfully I’m not seventeen any more.

Even though it’s all told from the narrator’s perspective, you get to know how his boyfriend feels through his eyes. He gets angry sometimes, he feels like the young man is a tease at times, or he has his own insecurities about why he’s saying no. But in the end, he refuses to allow his our narrator to be pushed when he’s not ready.

So I think it’s a great piece for young people who are trying to make that big decision. The author I think got inside the head of a hesitant young man, and manages to do that well in her young adult stories. I know that for some teens, it’s no big deal, but for those who do hesitate, I think it’s nice to know you’re not alone, and that even if your boyfriend (or girlfriend) doesn’t like it, if they really care they’ll wait. A message I think we all like the young people in our lives to take to heart. This story may not be for everyone, and seventeen year old angst can be a bit frustrating, but that is real life at times.

This is a very short story, but it was still sweet. The entirety of the story, the narrator is wondering if he is ready to sleep with his boyfriend, and he wavers between wanting to and being ready for it. I thought for sure that the boyfriend would cheat on him or something before the end, but I was wrong. The ending it sweet, and it just shows that true love does wait. It was very light, and if you're looking for a fast, sweet read, this is the one for you.

A good less than 20 page read. At the start it can be a bit of a confusing read since no characters are names and it's being narrated by one of the MC's. Nonetheless it was a good read and really expressed the way some kids feel on the subject of sex.

It was more like 2.5* The whole story is exactly as the blurb says - nothing less, but nothing more as well.
