In the midst of the chaos, Theo faces his own personal turmoil. When Lloyd confronts Theo about his feelings, Theo isn’t sure whether his heart still belongs to Carlos or if he truly cares for Lloyd. If he wants to save the world, Theo will have to overcome his troubled heart and harness the power within.

Since biographies aren’t my thing, I’ll put it simply: I write. Sometimes it’s amazing. Sometimes it’s horrible. But it’s always mine.

I have three series: The Theo Bourne Series, my award winning Meteora Trilogy, and my bestselling The Last Canticle. I also have a stand alone novel and run a semi-successful fantasy writing blog. I’m currently in between projects and struggling to balance writing, a cat, and my own narcotic thoughts.

WARNING FIRST (because I know it annoys some readers): Theo is attracted to another man, Lloyd (while still in a relationship with Carlos) and there are kisses between Theo and Lloyd. FYI, Lloyd is the guy Theo saved in the previous book.

.....

This opinion will describe some of the plots; mainly for my own sake because I have bad memory when it comes to details.

The details I put under spoiler cut -- so it doesn't seem like I'm rambling: .

Evelyn Shepherd's The Hunting Moon is one of my favorites in 2011. So I'm deliriously happy to be able to read about Theo Bourne and Carlos Ramirez again. I am in love with Theo and all his baggages as well as Carlos with his adoration to Theo (and being possessive).

That is why, this book is playing on my nerves due to the dancing attraction between Theo and Lloyd. Theo admits that Carlos is "his lifeline, who keeps him tethered to the world, preventing him from plummeting into darkness"; unfortunately Theo is not sure that Carlos is the only one. Lloyd is clearly in love with Theo -- and oh, gosh there are kisses, which making me nervous as hell since I'm not too much of cheating plot -- but I can't hate Lyold. The whole book I'm pretty much 'biting my nails' because I'm worried that Theo will cross that line.

The plot of Carlos being influenced by Eztli reminds me a bit of one mainstream urban fantasy novella -- and Theo (just like the heroine on that one) does not back down in saving Carlos. Theo has his issues for sure, but I'm happy that when it comes to Carlos, Theo does admit that "he can't picture his life without Carlos" that "he can't barely breathe when he tries to". So when he makes that decision regarding Lloyd, it's heartbreaking, but it's the right thing. Now I hope that Lloyd can somehow finds his own happiness.

Oh, there are quite a bit number of sex scenes in this one -- but I'm not even skimming them. I read them with passion and concentration because they feel necessary. I guess, it's a sign on how much I'm engaged with these characters.

Relationship aside, the action thrills me to the core. Eztli is so evil and the image of people burned by her fire is vivid and chilling. The whole book is fast-paced and when it comes to the climax when Theo faces Eztli, is definitely an amazing fight.

I hope this is not the end of the series --- thought I won't mind a spin-off featuring Llyod.

3.5 stars. Good paranormal m/m romance in which Detective Theo Bourne and his partner (in every sense of the word) Carlos Ramirez have to face both a mysterious mystical monster and Theo's attraction to someone else.

I was a but disappointed with this book in the beginning. I hate books where cheating occurs or is a possibility and this book kind of fell into that category. I kind of wish the author had made Lloyd feel like a kid brother or something instead of another possible love interest for Theo. That or have had Lloyd more prominent in book 1 so that it doesn't feel like Theo's cheating on Carlos.

The kissing scenes between Lloyd and Theo and the thoughts Theo were having when in bed with Carlos in the first half of the book just put me off for the rest of the book and it kind of made me annoyed at myself because I wanted to finish the book to see what happened with the vampire situation and at the same time I just wanted to give it up because I just didn't want to read about Theo kissing anyone other than Carlos or his inner struggle regarding the developing love triangle.

The issue of double standard was not lost on me in this book either. I didn't like how Theo was against cheating because of his ex but yet he was doing it to Carlos when he made out with Lloyd in the bathroom. I'm not even going to go into how Theo acted in book 1 when dealing with Carlos and Abe.

The book did end on a good note and the storyline was interesting so I was able to just enjoy it even though the the love triangle was driving me a bit crazy.

Just know these stars are for the story, Carlos, Lloyd and the rest of the cast/characters. I'm pissed at Theo for the way he treated Carlos and Lloyd. I felt so bad for Lloyd. I really like his character. Theo gets -5 stars, a swift kick in the ass and a bitch slap in the face. I don't care how heroic and awesome his phantom abilities are...he clowned and antagonized Carlos one too many times for me. I'll probably end up loving Theo again after I marinate so more on the battle and aftermath. I just need some time, lol!

A "Live Your Life, Buy The Book" Review

Event Horizon, Evelyn Shepherd’s second Theo Bourne novel, starts with Theo still living in Carlos’ home as his apartment is being renovated after the destruction done by Jason Devereaux. They’re happy and seem to be in the process of stabilizing their relationship. They would be better at it if Theo wasn’t still attached to Lloyd. He goes out to a concert with Lloyd even though he’s conflicted about his feelings for the werewolf. Carlos is understandably jealous. Theo most definitely is hiding something from him despite the fact it’s not a sexual relationship he has with Lloyd. Lloyd wants it to be sexual. Lloyd wants it to be everything and is not hiding his pursuit of Theo. Consequently, Theo is both stringing Lloyd along and betraying Carlos by having non-sexual intimacies with another. At a concert Theo attends with Lloyd all hell breaks loose. The band, Event Horizon, starts to sing and Theo experiences feelings of dysphoria and confusion. He and Lloyd escape to the bathroom where they proceed to kiss. Then they notice the place has caught fire. Theo returns to the concert to find the lead singer of the band singing as the room, and the people in it, burn around her. The sounds coming from her as she sings are terrifyingly beautiful. He does his best to save as many people as possible as well as stop the singing and hopefully apprehend the singer. He is unable to apprehend her but does stop her and manages to save some people. Authorities are called and eventually Carlos shows up on the scene. Theo and Carlos are assigned the case as it’s a mass homicide where many people were burned to death. Unfortunately, no one can really answer why they just stood there amidst the burning, nor can they say from where the fire started.

Theo and Carlos are forced to see the Mistress Isolde, leader of the vampires in Columbus. To see her Theo has to fight a duel with one of her minions. Isolde tells them who the singer really is, an ancient named Eztli. She is so powerful even the vamps don’t want to deal with her. Theo must use the sword with which he dueled to kill her. They leave Isolde and go to Lloyd’s band’s concert. Lloyd sings a song of his love for Theo on stage. Theo runs out and tells Lloyd a relationship can never happen between them. Theo and Carlos go home for the night. Theo awakes from a nightmare and calls Lloyd to make sure he’s okay. While talking to Lloyd he hears another attack by Eztli. Theo and Carlos show up in time to find a raging fire, many victims, and injured or dead first responders. Eztli is attempting to raise the Aztec god of death. She needs enough sacrifices to make it work and burning people alive at a public venue is the method she chose. For a moment Carlos seems transfixed by everything around him. Eventually, Theo is again able to chase off Eztli despite her rapidly increasing powers. Of course, he forgot the sword with which he is supposed to kill her. Lloyd is a witness to this event also. Theo wants to keep him safe but realizes he can’t without driving away Carlos. Carlos is justifiably pissed off. After the disaster they have a huge fight.

Things crystallize for Theo. He realizes his feelings for Lloyd are nothing compared to those for Carlos. He has to make amends but something is not right with Carlos. Not right at all. Carlos and Theo are called to another meeting with Isolde. She informs them coyotes are an animal Eztli can control. It would have been good to know that sooner. They think they have found her next attack site and are planning to apprehend her there when Carlos’ behavior goes seriously off the rails. Theo realizes just how wrong he’s been and knows exactly what he’s about to let loose.

I had serious issues with Theo’s infidelity. I don’t like characters that cheat, so I feel I was a bit predisposed to disliking the situation. No, he didn’t have sex with Lloyd, but he fell in love with him. If that’s not considered cheating I don’t know what is. I also felt the situation didn’t fit the character of Theo we met in the first book. Theo viciously guarded his heart from others. Carlos had to launch a full assault of Theo’s heart to get inside. This man, who kept himself remote from all others suddenly finds himself in love with two men? No. I feel the self-sabotage was a good excuse, I just don’t buy, at all, the means with which he attempted to sabotage himself. I felt that was bad character development in an otherwise well developed character. Theo had realistic personality traits and foibles in the first book. I didn’t seem them continue.

I did like the overall plot and the intertwined storylines. I like that two fronts of attack on Carlos and Theo’s relationship is something carried over from the first book, one of them professional and one of them personal, both of them deadly. The increase in the world building was subtle and good. It left me wanting to know more about Theo’s universe.

To See Review at Booked Up

First let me start off saying if you haven’t read The Hunting Moon, it’s a must read before you read Event Horizon, as it is the first in The Theo Bourne series by Evelyn Shepherd.

Theo is still struggling with his powers as a Phantom which is rare in humans, it gives them the power of psycho-kinesis and the ability to create doppelgangers. Again Evelyn Shepherd delivers; you never get bored with this one. There always seems to be something happening that keeps you reading, unable to put it down. Theo seems to be struggling with his emotions between Carlos and Lloyd. He cares for them both, but can only choose one. I literally wanted to pull my hair out because of it; I love Theo and Carlos, and hate seeing complications between them. And the sex between them … SO HOT!! And can I just say ... Carlos has the best way to teach Spanish!! *fans self*

So while dealing with these inner turmoils, Theo has to figure out who this Lady Vampire is who seems hell bent on burning everything in her path while she will stop at nothing to bring back the God of Death. As Theo works to find a way to bring her down, things begin to get out of control between Carlos and him, leaving Theo to wonder if he’ll be able to move on without Carlos. It is like a constant battle, pushing, shoving, and pulling, back and forth. Carlos keeps fighting to keep Theo right there with him. I love Carlos! He has to keep a close watch on his own inner coyote; which in itself is never ending, he is always there working hard on his relationship with Theo. As they get closer to finding the Lady Vampire, Carlos begins to worry he just might not have all the control he needs to help Theo, he feels his control is slipping at an almost dangerous rate! So it’s up to Theo to reach him …

I'm beginning to think I’m stuck in a rut reading books that deal with love triangles and cheating. LOL. I can’t seem to break away from them … even when I normally hate them. Yet for the life of me, I simple couldn’t put this story down! We get to see Theo question himself, and grow from his experiences as well as Carlos battling against himself when all he wants to do is protect Theo. Theo and Carlos are beautiful together, even if they are both stubborn fools most of the time. hehehe

I give this 4 stars. I really enjoyed this book! And can’t wait for the next installment in the Theo Bourne Series!

I am still not sure how to rate this one... I have previously enjoyed The Hunting Moon because of the action plot, but mostly due to the evolving relationship between Theo and Carlos. Therefore, I did have quite high expectations for the sequel and, to be honest, I was disappointed.

Ami has offered a comprehensive review before me so I will keep things brief. The first half of the book gave the impression of being dominated by Theo wavering between Carlos (with whom he already had a serious relationship) and Lloyd. Even the action seemed overshadowed by Theo's growing need for Lloyd, while his language and acts suggested something much deeper than physical attraction. It bothered me and I suffered for Carlos, felt sorry for Lloyd and immensely irritated towards Theo.

The second half redeemed the novel a bit for me, yet at the end I firmly believed that Carlos deserved someone better than the current Theo, or at least someone who can completely reciprocate his love regardless of the presence or absence of temptation.
