About the author

Chantal Mouffe is a Belgian political theorist. She holds a professorship at the University of Westminster in the United Kingdom. She is best known as co-author of Hegemony and Socialist Strategy with Ernesto Laclau. Their thoughts are usually described as post-Marxism as they were both politically active in the social and student movements of the 1960s including working class and new social movements (notably second-wave feminism in Mouffe's case). They rejected Marxist economic determinism and the notion of class struggle being the single crucial antagonism in society. Instead they urged for radical democracy of agonistic pluralism where all antagonisms could be expressed. In their opinion, ‘...there is no possibility of society without antagonism’; indeed, without the forces that articulate a vision of society, it could not exist.

کتاب موف، شروع کوبنده‌ای دارد؛ دفاع تمام قد از امر سیاسی و نزاع سیاسی (نظریه‌ی کارل اشمیت)، در برابر جهان خطرناک: یعنی دنیای صلح و آرامش، دنیای بدون آنتاگونیست.

منتها کتاب به تناقض‌های نظری جدی‌ای می‌خورد و قادر نیست پاسخی برای آن‌ها دست و پا کند. مثلا این‌که از عوارض این یکی شدن دو قطب چپ و راست، برآمدنِ راست پوپولیست افراطی و تروریسم بنیادگرایی است. اما چرا باید به این‌ها گفت عوارض؟ طبق فرضیات موف، تروریسم هم نوعی آنتاگونیسم است، پس دیگر غصه‌مان چیست؟ جهان هنوز تخالف‌ورزی‌هایش را دارد!

موف می‌گوید البته باید مانع ورود هرکسی که بنیاد دموکراسی را هدف قرار گرفته به نزاع رادیکال دموکراسی شد؛ ولی سایرین تشریف بیاورند، قدم‌شان روی چشم. پس هرچند موف می‌گوید دموکراسی لیبرال غربی لزوما بهترین چیز نیست، اما به یک ارزش ذاتی در دموکراسی باور دارد، تا به معضل پست‌مدرن‌ها دچار نشود.

نهایتا موف ایده‌ی جهانی‌سازی (حتی در فرم چپی‌اش تحت عنوان انبوه خلق نزد هارت و نگری) را رد می‌کند و می‌گوید اجازه بدهید جهان چند قطبی بماند. نظر موف درباره‌ی دو قطبی پوتین-غرب چه خواهد بود؟ از آن‌جا که کتاب راه‌حلی ارائه نمی‌دهد برای این منازعه‌ی بالا گرفته و یکی-در-یکی-ادغام-نشده، لذا طبعا پاسخی نداریم و نظریه‌مان بلاتکلیف است.

پس این کتاب به چه دردی می‌خورد؟ که ای جرج بوش، مخالفانت را نه «اخلاقی»، که «سیاسی» قضاوت کن. که ای اروپا، انگ نئوفاشیسم روی احزاب نزن. به جایش بیایید علت ظهور آن‌ها را بررسی کنید، که عبارت است از: از بین رفتن مرز سنتی چپ و راست.

This book is excellent--Mouffe makes a clear and cogent argument against the neoliberal "consensus" politics of the last several decades and how the lack of political fights (agonism) in politics has created a void filled by far right groups. When "both sides" are in consensus on so much, people will create parties to break things. I think she's basically right, but I think she misses some nuances in US politics (namely, that "one side") has been courting the right wing for some time without bringing up their issues into the public forum.

Hoe Mouffe al zeer vroeg, nog voor de opkomst van de vierde golf van naoorlogse uiterst rechts, een dergelijke opleving wist te duiden en dat theoretisch, met Schmitt op rechts en Marx op links, weet te conceptualiseren vind ik prachtig vormgegeven. Wat ik minder beaam is hoe makkelijk zij zich van het liberalisme af lijkt te maken.

I read this on the plane home primarily with the idea that it might be a good text to use in an undergrad class. If you've read Mouffe's work with Laclau or any of her other books, you certainly won't find anything new here: adversary over enemy, agonism over antagonism, democratic conflict over lazy Habermasian consensual discussion, and so on. She takes on the cosmopolites here and makes good arguments. This part of the book suffers because she chooses rather weak opponents. Someone like Pheng Cheah would have been more formidable. What is really interesting is her assertion that Hardt and Negri's "Empire" is also part of larger liberal, cosmopolitan visions of a post-political world. That should raise some eyebrows.

Pedagogically, Mouffe would be useful because she so clearly stakes out her arguments and oppositions. It is hard to imagine that an undergrad incapable of reconstructing her arguments and her political investments.

If you're already familiar with the political thinking of Chantal Mouffe, this slim volume won't be too exciting for you. The first part is sort of a best of: Conflict as a basis for the sphere of the political (based on Carl Schmitt) and democracy as a framework for the necessary fight for hegemony based on the mutual acceptance of the legitimacy of the opponent's position. I quite like this approach as a systematic definition of democracy that is not just a sum of different parameters. It's helpful for historical approaches to democracy that don't try to replicate contemporary ideals (an approach which usually ends up in ridiculous debates other the question whether a system was 1/2, 3/4 or 17/23 democratic).

In the second part Chantal Mouffe debates contemporary models for democracy, rejecting cosmopolic, consensual and neoliberal models that in her opinion try to eliminate the political (aka the necessary conflict) which cannot work and has the risk to create deeper antagonisms along moral and other absolut lines - also not new, but some of her predictions were quite accurate.
So, if you just want a quick introduction into the thinking of the most prominent left political scientist of today: go for it. If you want deeper insights into her thinking: I fear there is no way around the thicker books...

Ben het op een aantal fundamentele punten met haar oneens, en ook stevig, maar ik kan met recht zeggen dat dit sinds Nietzsche de auteur is die het meeste impact op mij heeft gehad. Eindelijk een democraat die serieus te nemen is, die zich scherp afzet tegen de dominante tendens van 'Third Way' politics, of 'het consensus georiënteerde model', zoals ze het noemt. Ze keert zich met recht tegen het idee dat de democratie draait om het samenbrengen van verschillende perspectieven om zo tot oplossingen van ingewikkelde problemen te komen, en stelt daarvoor in de plaats een model waarin democratie dient om de antagonismen in de maatschappij een plek te geven om hun kracht kwijt te kunnen. Dit is het idee wat mij in eerste instantie aantrok aan dit boek omdat ik denk dat het zich enorm leent voor een kritiek op democratie vanuit een radicaal perspectief.

Uiteindelijk betekent dit wel dat ik op bepaalde punten echt met haar clash, en dat was te verwachten. Zo heeft ze een bijtende kritiek op Hardt en Negri's versie van wat ze 'de kosmopolitische wereldorde' noemt, en stelt ze op dat vlak gelijk aan de Third-Way politics types, daar kan ik wel in mee. Die kosmopolitische wereldorde stelt een soort globale democratie voor, en dat maakt ze wel even goed met de grondt gelijk. Ze brandt hun idee dat nationale soevereiniteiten problematisch zijn wel keihard af, en ik zou het niet meer oneens met haar kunnen zijn. Dat is altijd wel lekker in zo'n boek

Ik vind dit oprecht zo goed dat ik van plan ben op termijn alles van Mouffe te lezen, echt top.

Eu gosto muito da escrita de Mouffe, mas achei o final do livro menos trabalhado. Relembro que essa leitura foi a primeira que fiz para minha primeira pesquisa à convite de uma amiga em 2019 e retomá-la foi maravilhosa.

Os conceitos-chaves são teorizados de maneira muito elucidativa e as críticas são (quase) sempre muito pertinentes. Em alguns momentos senti falta de uma fundamentação dos comparativos que ela faz, mas o livro não deixa de ser incrível e essencial.

Estudar movimentos contínuos é sempre muito difícil, e o que ela teoriza consegue se manter intacto quase 20 anos depois.

Belgijska filozofka wypowiada wojnę postpolityczności. Po oręż sięga do źródeł, czyli do Carla Schmitta. Myśliciela, który zdefiniował XX wieczne nauki polityczne. Znanego krytyka liberalizmu. Przypomnijmy - stworzył on pojęcie polityczności i przekonywał do rozumienia polityki w wymiarze antagonicznym. Jeśli określeniami, którymi opisujemy moralność są dobro i zło, a ekonomię - opłacalność i nieopłacalność, to polityczność definiuje wg niego podział na przyjaciela i wroga. Ten śmiały pogląd wiązał się z poważnymi następstwami. Schmitt połączył go z odrzuceniem demokracji parlamentarnej jako ustroju, a także krytyką racjonalistycznego konsensusu. Pochwalał za to zwycięstwo nad przeciwnikiem w sensie hegemonicznym. To ostatnie zaprowadziło niemieckiego myśliciela w mroczne zakamarki poparcia dla nazistowskiej dyktatury w latach 30 XX wieku. Epizod, który położył się cieniem na jego nazwisku. Doniosłość wspomnianej definicji polityczności zapewniła mu jednak nieśmiertelność i stałe miejsce w kanonie nauk politycznych.

Mouffe sięga po Schmitta, rozprawiając się ze współczesną liberalną demokracją, gdzie antagonizm został zastąpiony przez postpolityczne poszukiwanie konsensusu. W swej pracy filozofka udowadnia, że bolączki współczesnego liberalnego systemu biorą się z tego właśnie zagubienia zasad definiujących polityczność. Jest to wg niej przyczyną spadku społecznego zaangażowania w politykę, oraz wzrostu prawicowych populizmów. Jako remedium, postuluje model agoniczny, który miałby stanowić ujarzmioną wersję schmittowskiego podziału na przyjaciela i wroga, pozwalając na wpisanie sporu w demokratyczne ramy.

Schmittowska walka polityczna odbywa się na śmierć i życie i definiuje ją ostateczność. Dla celów tego wywodu porównajmy ją do wyzbytej zasad ulicznej walki. Postpolityczny spór to zaś obserwowany z boku, monotonny i nużący widza pojedynek, według ściśle ustalonych zasad. Coś bliższego starcia szachowego. Zaproponowany przez Mouffe model agoniczny będzie więc w tej paraboli czymś w rodzaju walki w klatce. Krwawej, z większością chwytów dozwolonych, a jednak w obecności sędziego, który rozstrzyga o zwycięstwie którejś ze stron i powstrzymuje zachowania ostateczne.

Nośna to praca i ciekawie umotywowana. Dobrze czyta się ją z perspektywy niemal dwudziestu lat po powstaniu. Można śmiało zaryzykować stwierdzenie, że wiele z prognoz Chantal Mouffe okazało się dojmująco trafnych. Wartościowa analiza tematu, który jest chyba najbardziej ważki w dzisiejszym dyskursie politologicznym - o fundamentalnych sprzecznościach leżących u podstaw systemu demokracji liberalnej i sposobach na ich przezwyciężenie. Jako taką rozprawę serdecznie polecam.

Sehr unterhaltsam! Ein letztes intellektuelles Zucken und Aufbäumen dessen, was Giddens zurecht Fundamentalismus nennt.
Dass man es nicht falsch versteht: Ich empfinde Mouffe-Lektüre als Genuss, die durch klare und zugleich fundierte Analyse brilliert. Sie nimmt einen als Leser:in ernst und scheut auch nicht davor zurück „Schmuddelautoren“ wie Carl Schmitt zustimmend zu zitieren. Auch nimmt sie die Argumentation der Gegenseite ernst und stellt den Anspruch deren Theorien und Argumentationen, auch wenn sie ihnen nicht zustimmt, akkurat und bestmöglich darzustellen. Man würde sagen: Sie hat ihren Schmitt/Giddens gelesen. Als Philosophiestudent:in und politisch Interessierte:r kann man gewinnbringend Chantal Mouffe lesen. Jedenfalls wenn es um die Form geht.
Inhaltlich verstellt ihr ihre eigene Position im politischen Feld den kritischen Blick auf ihre eigene Rolle als Akteurin. Sie behauptet, dass Giddens/Becks „dialogischer“ Ansatz, entgegen ihres „agonistischen Ansatzes“ die Frage der Machtstruktur und hegemonialen Ordnung nicht beantworten kann, da diesem das radikale Element fehle. Dabei verkennt sie aber, dass ihre eigene Position selbst wieder nur eine (und das sagt sie selber) „neue hegemoniale Ordnung“ anstrebt. Das ist die alte, sozialistische Kampfparole des (antagonistischen) Klassenkampfes. Man könnte sagen: Das Personal wird ausgetauscht, die Struktur/die Ordnung selbst bleibt gleich. Die Pyramide wird lediglich umgedreht, and der Pyramide ändert sich nichts. Damit entlarvt sie sich selbst als konservativer als der von ihr kritisierte Ansatz von Giddens/Beck. Denn letzterer zielt tatsächlich auf eine Veränderung der Formstruktur ab, unter dem sich ein starkes „Wir“ in kooperativer Form konstituiert. Wenn man es zuspitzen möchte könnte man sagen: Giddens und Becks Ansatz zielt auf die Einführung einer Losdemokratie, in der die Machtfrage sowohl geklärt, als auch situativ und lokaltemporal neu verhandelt wird. Mouffe selbst beharrt auf einer grundsätzlichen Fortführung des zeitgenössischen aristokratischen Herr/Knecht Herrschaftssystems, in dem sie nur fragt WER herrscht (die Neoliberalen oder die Linken) aber die Herrschaft selbst nicht problematisieren möchte. Genau das ist es aber, worauf das vermeintlich „Postpolitische“ Konzept des Dialoges abzielt.

Darum das Fazit: Lesenswert, inhaltlich mittelmäßig weil unreflektiert, aber formtechnisch/argumentativ sehr stark. Muss jeder selbst wissen ob einem dieses Buch noch etwas sagt.

Głowna myśl jest taka, że rozmywanie granicy pomiędzy lewicą a prawicą nie służy demokracji i daje przestrzeń dla populistów. Duopol władzy, która jest np. głównie prawicowa przy słabej opozycji w postaci kolejnej prawicy, to przepis na to by do głosu doszli anty-establishmentowi protofaszyści. No właśnie tak się dzieje w Europie. Pierwsza była Austria, gdzie w 2000 miało dojść do zawiązania się rządu partii prawicowej z partią populistyczną. UE zareagowała sankcjami, napiętymi stosunkami dyplomatycznymi, wszystkie austriackie media wzięły jeden front: znaczyły pisać i mówić o tym, że najwidoczniej proces denazyfikacji Austrii nie powiódł się w pełni. W efekcie ten rząd szybko ustąpił. Mouffe pisze też o tym, że problemem lewicy jest brak lewicowego populizmu. Jej zdaniem świat powinien unikać gospodarczych hegemonii iść w kierunku pluralizmu. Takiej Europy, tyle że na skalę świata, gdzie będzie wiele ośrodków decyzyjnych (zamiast jednego głównego) i wiele ośrodków kulturowych), by unikać tego, co próbujemy robić teraz, czyli westernizowania krajów islamskich.

Waarom het het politieke narratief is verwaterd en het politieke domein is verworden tot een extreme antagonistische vechtkooi. Tijd voor een mondiale ontwikkeling van het politieke.

“Wat er aan de hand is, is dat het politieke tegenwoordig wordt uitgespeeld in het morele register. Met andere woorden, het bestaat nog altijd in een wij/zij-tegenstelling, maar dit wij/zij wordt nu niet meer gedefinieerd op basis van politieke categorieen, maar gevat in morele termen. In plaats van een strijd tussen 'rechts en links' staan wij nu voor een strijd tussen 'goed en kwaad'.”

[…] wanneer er geen kanalen beschikbaar zijn via welke conflicten een 'agonistische' vorm zouden kunnen aannemen, deze conflicten de neiging hebben zich op antagonische wize te manifesteren. Read this for my premaster thesis. Chantal Mouffe presents interestings concepts on (what the author calls a 'third way of thinking about)the fchallenges facing democratic politics today. She focusses on the importance of a partisan 'agonistic' perspective in contrast to both the current neoliberal hegemony ánd antagonistic outburst she sees in Western politics. I read this book with the conccept 'plurality' in mind, as Mouffe presents this as both a fact and ideal of current (western) civilization. She brings an original angle on this concept to bear I will be able to use for my research.
Short, slightly perfuntory and provocative. Would recommend if you would like to reflect on the current political situation from a different starting the position than neo liberalism (which we often occupy without realizing).

Livro incrível, sobretudo no que tange à abordagem sobre a política interna. Suas noções de antagonismo/"agonismo", o uso do conceito de "amigo/inimigo" de Schmitt como paradigma teórico e as críticas ao modelo liberal de democracia são bem fundamentadas e nos fazem refletir sobre a sociedade em que vivemos.

Apesar de ter sido escrito em 2005, é um livro que diz muito sobre a realidade atual do Brasil, inclusive a ascensão do que se convencionou chamar de "extrema-direita", nomenclatura que a autora critica incisivamente.

Para quem gosta de estudar política, é um prato cheio!

I read this for my university course on protest politics, specifically post-political theory. As one of the key theoreticians of the course it was important for me to be very familiar with Chantal Mouffe’s work. This book made that very easy since Mouffe uses clear language which in turn makes it easy to grasp her arguments. I also thought the structure of the book was good, starting with the fundamentals and definitions and then branching out into applications and real-life examples.

Mouffe e sua obra são um avanço que alivia o resto do mundo quando comparadas com outras reflexões ocidentais sobre a democracia. Aqui, encarna um realismo político para a defesa dos seus ideais que evoca a clássica acidez de Carl Schmitt. Bra redogörelse av det postpolitiska tillståndet. Och en utmärkt definition av det politiska, gruppers oförsonliga konflikter och nödvändiga antagonismer. Intressanta lösningar på liberalismens problem. En aning hög grad av akademisk mumbojumbo men fortfarande inte obfiskuratism. En måste läsa för alla radikaler eller intresserade av politik genrellt.

Chantal Mouffe presenterer et interessant teoretisk rammeverk for å forstå utviklingen i vesten siden 1990-tallet. Jeg finner spesielt hennes kritikk av det liberale demokratiets hegemoni som særdeles interessant. Mouffes argumenter om at politikken nå utspilles i moralens register, finner jeg både treffende og overbevisende. Boken anbefales både i et statsvitenskapelig og retorisk perspektiv!

This book is very dated but not on a bad way. It just reminds me of the need to fight against American neoliberal hegemony in the post 9/11 era. That being said, I think the critique and the vision of an alternative (a multi polar world of vernacular political systems, is still completely relevant and fresh.

still figuring out what do i think about Mouffe and her believe of parliamentary politics. coalition concept and agonism seem fine and relatively nice, but it lacks utopian imaginary. but maybe it is a way for going for utopia, as many contemprary utopians think? nonetheless, very fruitful for left discussion
