Book info: I am the author of the Iron Seas steampunk romance series. I've written a guide to the world (including a map) on my website.

I also write a paranormal romance series, the Guardians. That series guide is also on my website, including a "The Story So Far" feature, which allows you to catch up on all of the books that previously released in the series if you start after the first installment.

Goodreads info: I am slowly, slowly adding to my shelves and reviews. It's unlikely that I will join many book discussions (especially of my own work) simply because I don't want to stifle reader conversation.

Bio: Meljean was raised in the middle of the woods, and hid under her blankets at night with fairy tales, comic books, and romances. She left the forest and went on a misguided tour through the world of accounting before focusing on her first loves, reading and writing–and she realized that monsters, superheroes, and happily-ever-afters are easily found between the covers, as well as under them, so she set out to make her own.

Meljean lives in Portland, Oregon with her husband and daughter.

I am so excited about my very recent discovery of the Iron Seas series written by Meljean Brook. There are sooooo many stories in this collection and I can't wait to gobble them all up! Steampunk just does it for me in terms of female empowerment. While the time period generally reflects oppression of women, these steampunk gals play the part and allow themselves to remain visually underestimated with their corsets and such, but then they pull an arsenal out from their skirts (or just an opium gun...because that's all these badasses need) or they use their intellect to subtly take charge.
"With a short bow, the man immediately complied. God, that had been beautifully done. Rhys would have ordered the butler to find his balls. But with a few simple questions, Mina let the man find them on his own and steered him into recognizing her authority."
I just love it! Check out these images I found...

Now the men aren't too bad themselves. Generally all manners and gorgeous, with a fine intellect of their own. I love the male characters in these books! All I can say is thank God Ms. Brook wrote this series for adults, wink wink.

Mina Wentworth and the Invisible City is a novella (#1.5) that chronologically follows the characters from the first book The Iron Duke. To say I was ecstatic to see these characters again is an understatement. This novella focuses on an interesting and suspenseful mystery that Mina is investigating with the support of her new husband Rhys (aka The Iron Duke). There is a secondary mystery of sorts going on that includes Anne the tinker, and I was just as happy to see her character again! It's not all mystery though. Readers get some insight into the couple's marriage dynamic, and how Anne fits into their life. Probably my favorite character in this short-story was Constable Newberry, who assists Mina in her investigative work. He just cracked me up with all his awkward embarrassment. This was such an enjoyable story. If you are a fan of the series, this novella is not to be missed. Enjoy!

My favorite quote:
"Charities are worthwhile." "I have no argument with that, sir. I do have an argument with anyone who has never labored a day in his life telling someone who has worked her fingers to the bone that if she just worked harder she wouldn't need charity."

This was really great for a novella follow-up to the first book in this series! In fact, I liked this book even more, but you would have to read The Iron Duke in order to really understand this one. This had a good combination of romance/mystery/suspense/steampunk.

However, I think I am going to skip book #2 because those characters didn't interest me in the first book, and read book #3 next instead. Steampunk Iceland just sounds cool!

A charming addition to the Iron Seas series- I just adore this couple, and reading about how they are learning to deal with marriage and its attendant stresses was lovely.
Good story, too, with the added element of the consequences of industrialisation for the masses of factory workers in Victorian (steam punk) England. Lots of ethical questions for us even today.

But God, I just love this couple- the way they just have to shag each other all the time, just to reassure themselves that they are alive and there for each other, when their lives are so full of danger. It's great fun and very sexy!

This epilogue novella with its own plot is an excellent addition to The Iron Duke, and I think it is one of those epilogues that doesn’t have bunch of cheesy stuffs. Rhys and Mina’s relationship is more romantic in this novella, and btw, something hasn’t changed like umm...Rhys still frequently uses that word :/

This is a short story about Mina and Rhys' marriage and how they both need to do their jobs even with the dangers. I loved how they are still hot for each other but to me - what was it 6 or 7 encounters in detail - it was a little much, and I like sex scenes! One of my favorite series.

4.5 stars - I loved Meljean Brook's THE IRON DUKE for her amazing steampunk alternate London, but while I really liked the leads, Inspector Mina Wentworth and Rhys, their story in the THE IRON DUKE - unlike almost everything else of Brook's - wasn't terribly romantic. Well this short set 8 month into their happily ever IS romantic and in some ways sweet - the pair truly care for each other, but both have good reason to fear for losing the one they love since Mina's job is dangerous and Rhys' life is as well. So I loved seeing the pair together here with just a bit of a murder mystery interspersed between the numerous bouts of life affirming 'shagging'.

The story here does a pretty good job of laying out the basics of the Iron Seas world, so those who somehow have missed Brook's fascinating series can still enjoy the story. And for fans, in addition to more of Mina and Rhys, there is also a little teasing bit of Scarsdale - looks like he's in for it now - and also the last fifteen percent of the kindle edition is a preview for the upcoming RIVETED - I can hardly wait (I am such a Brook fan girl:)

(Although this the first time for "Mina Wentworth and the Invisible City" as an ebook, this short story was apparently included in the mass market paperback release of the THE IRON DUKE, but it is all new to those of us who read the original trade paperback release.)

This short 100 page story is a nice look into Rhys and Mina's HEA. I was a fan of the first book and really liked both Mina and Rhys although it wasn't the most romantic book it was very well written, entertaining and the world building was fascinating.

This book takes place 8 months after the end of the Iron Duke and gives a look at the relationship between Rhys and Mina. It has the romance and lovely moments that the Iron Duke didn't have. You can see right away that Rhys and Mina love each other although they are both still working through some of their fears. Rhys is afraid something will happen to Mina since her job is so dangerous and Mina is a little afraid now that the challenge of getting her is past Rhys won't want her as much.

The two work through their fears while Mina investigates a murder. It's a great combination of some sweet, romantic moments between the two along with some intense sex with an intriguing mystery.

I'd recommend reading the Iron Duke before reading this one although the book does a good job of discussing the basics of the world. If you're a fan of the Iron Duke and Mina then this is definitely worth reading!

Historia corta tras la historia de The Iron Duke.
Me gustó bastante. Aunque se entiende todo, creo que sería más apreciada si se lee el primer libro primero.
Digamos que este trata de cómo se adapta el duque de hierro a que su esposa siga trabajando de policía en este universo alternativo de regencia steampunk.

This e-novella is $2.99 and is from one of my all time favorite authors, Meljean Brook. Mina Wentworth and the Invisible City (Iron Seas #1.5) was originally in the back of mass-market version of The Iron Duke, which I had no idea about. The Iron Duke blew my ever loving mind out of the water (you can read my review here) and based on reading The Iron Duke, no other book I’ve read can come close to The Iron Duke in regards to Steampunk. Every other Steampunk type book I’ve read since The Iron Duke fails in comparison when it comes to Meljean’s writing, and her Steampunk world is exactly what a Steampunk novel should be.

Mina Wentworth and the Invisible City begins eight months after, or around the end of The Iron Duke. Detective Inspector Mina is now married to Rhys Traehaearn, aka the Iron Duke who ended up saving England from the nasty Horde that basically made slaves of the people of England and most of Europe for centuries. Mina and Rhys had a very eccentric courtship, even if you can call it that. Both Mina and Rhys are still trying to become accustomed to being married, although they are so head over heels in love with one another. Rhys fears for Mina’s safety because she still works as a detective for the London police. Sometimes Mina gets into scrapes and is hurt by the criminals, and when Rhys finds out he doesn’t scream or yell or goes crazy, but shows through his undying passion for Mina how much she means to him. Mina loves being married to Rhys, especially the marriage bed, and other places outside the bedroom where Rhys can love her. These two are very feisty for one another! Hurrah for feisty married couples. But Mina worries that Rhys may one day fall out of love with her. Rhys worries he may lose Mina and worried that she doesn’t know the deep, all consuming love he has for her although he tries to show her everyday with his actions (usually though his lovemaking), or something simple as a look.

When a man who runs in Rhys’s circle ends up murdered, it’s up to Mina to solve the crime. Rhys wants to help her and soon they’re working together to find the villain who may have an ulterior motive against both Rhys and Mina, where he wants them both dead.

Mina Wentworth and the Invisible City is one of the best novellas I read this year mostly in part because I love Mina and Rhys together. They remind me of Roarke and Eve from JD Robb’s In Death series. These two connect so well together and the balance of action, as well as the love scenes are great. I also adore Rhys’s friend Scarsdale who is now one of my favorite characters of Meljean’s (perhaps more so than Michael from Meljean’s Guardian series. Shhhh don’t tell her). Scarsdale is adorable, witty and one you want to hug close and not let go. Something big happens with him here and his pain is so palatable because he must sacrifice himself to pay a role in public. Scarsdale is gay and can’t be his true self or love who he wants because he’s heir to a vast fortune and must have a sterling reputation because of his family’s name. Things are left unresolved with Scarsdale, but I’m so thrilled that Meljean has plans to write his own story, which means Scarsdale gets his own HEA, and it looks like it will be a M/M romance. I did my own Snoopy Dance when I heard this, and whether Meljean self publishes or Berkley decides to publish Scarsdale’s story, I will but it as soon as it's available. Scarsdale owns my heart and I’m a total fan girl over him.

If you are a big fan of Meljean’s and love her Iron Seas series, you must get Mina Wentworth and the Invisible City for your collection. Mina is an unbelievably strong heroine and Rhys a hero in every sense of the word. This is one novella you may end up re-reading again and again because it’s so good.

(3.75/5.0) B-
I liked this epilogue/novella about Rhys and Mina. I particularly enjoyed the fact that as they adjust to marriage and work through fears, they have taken the time to form their own little family with Anne the Tinker. Still, Scarsdale is the most memorable character in this short story with his unbearable situation. It is heartbreaking, and I'm hoping that Brook finds a great resolution for him. I also wonder if the storyline used as part of the mystery in this short about children working as laborers and automatons taking over factories will be fully realized in a future story.

There's a particular kind of book that works well on a plane. It has to be absorbing, so that you're not distracted by the people crawling over your lap to get to the bathroom or accidentally elbowing you in the chest because, let's face it, no one can actually stay within the two cubic feet of space they give you. It also has to be the kind of book that you can pick up and set down, because occasionally you might want to crawl over the lap of the person next to you to get to the bathroom, or perhaps put it in the seat pocket so you can dig in to your rubbery airplane chicken or, if you're on a domestic flight, enjoy your tiny glass of carbonated beverage. And ideally it will be something that you have a certain level of familiarity with. Something that you can be confident you'll like (no one wants to be stuck in a tiny airplane seat with a book that's not working for you) and that will keep your interest without making too many demands.

This book is very nearly my ideal plane book. It's short, but not too short. I finished it on my flight but wasn't left with a bunch of time to fill. It's adventurous and action-packed and romantic, which made it really compelling reading. It was also easy enough for me to set it down on those occasions I needed to rearrange my belongings and/or person in the smallest corner of space possible for an adult human woman to fit in. And I've read the whole Iron Seas series with gusto, so this was familiar and didn't require a whole lot of additional effort to understand the worldbuilding or character relationships.

Thank you, thank you, Meljean Brook for getting me through my flight today. There were moments that I even enjoyed it.

If you enjoyed Mina and Rhys in The Iron Duke, you will really enjoy them here. It's been eight months since they married and we get to see how married life is treating them. Of course, there is a case for Mina to solve as well.

I just got such a kick out of Rhys and Mina in this novella. Rhys is having a hard time dealing with the possibility of Mina getting hurt on the job and it doesn't help that the newssheets exaggerate everything. Since Rhys has never really loved anyone before, he has such a need to possess Mina. This leads to lots of "shagging" which Mina doesn't complain about at all.

The case is interesting especially reading about all the gadgets and body modifications. I enjoyed the ongoing friendship/work relationship Mina has with Newberry and it was good to get updated on him and his wife.

We also get to see more of Anne The Tinker and what's going on with her. It was great seeing them work out the kinks and solidify as a family. Scarsdale plays an important role and it's interesting to see where his life is headed...or if it will head that way. Hopefully, he will have a book soon.

Getting this sneak-peak into Mina and Rhys' married life was absolutely a treat. Although they are crazy about each other and the spark is definitely alive, they cannot figure out how to be with each other. For Rhys, being a part of the family and loving Mina come with the fear of losing her. Mina continues working on the streets and her scuffles with criminals often leave her injured. I love that Rhys, worried to death as he is, still leaves her to do what she loves and does not interfere. He purposely puts himself out of the way and gives her space to do her job; his restraint speaks more of his regard for her than any number of protective tantrums.

I am completely crazy about the Mina/Rhys ship and omg! Meljean Brook, you've just won my heart over...

Terrific follow-up novella to The Iron Duke! Action, mystery, romance, shagging...imaginative and engaging..this short story has everything that Iron Seas fans love! I definitely recommend it to those who loved The Iron Duke and who may have felt disappointed by Heart of Steel! Secondary characters - Scarsdale, Newberry, and tinker child Anne - were an added treat. The Riveted excerpt look very good, too!

It's a cute extra and it gives more insight into Rhys' mind and his feelings for Mina, but other than that, I felt it was completely unnecessary. Again, works well as an extra and as a gift to the fans, but not as a $2.99 novella. Also, the "I must shag you to make sure you're alive" was romantic the first time, extremely annoying the other two or three times.

Probably the most memorable part/character was Scarsdale, but his parts were fillers.

Capturing a glimpse into Mina and Rhys’s married life, 8 months after events ended in The Iron Duke, this turned out to be a rather sweet read. Aside from a murder case Mina’s in the process of solving that is.

I totally loved this instalment! The novella is set 8 months later with both Mina and Rhys are settling down and adjusting to married life. A problematic case crops up when a murder of a factory owner happens and Mina with the help of Rhys have to discover who is behind it. This was such a fantastic story, and I loved the development of the romance with Rhys and Mina who are so deeply in love but worried for each other especially about Mina's job and the danger it can present. But Rhys is willing to give her the space and the support to Mina which I loved. This is in a lot of ways reminds me of the In Death novels which has a similar dynamic but the steampunk/fantasy setting makes this stand out in a delightful way. I adored The Iron Duke, and this is a great followup. I really hope we get to see more of Rhys and Mina in future books or novellas, but if there is isn't any more - this is a wonderful extra to the main book and for a novella it was very fulfilling!

Was this great or what?! (oh yea, some of you probably haven't read it yet!)

Mina Wentworth and the Invisible City (Iron Seas #1.5) is a great continuation of the couple from the first book(Iron Duke): Mina Wentworth and the Iron Duke himself!

ABOUT the PLOT/STORY: 5/5 stars
It takes place 8 months after Iron Duke finished and catch up with our main characters. A big element of the story is the crechés, where the orphaned children of London live. A crime is being investigated by Mina and relationships are highlighted by difficult situations. All in all a fun, inventive & interesting!

CHARACTERS: 4/5 stars
They are great and hold up to the standards of the first book.
*It gets 4 and not 5, because I am sick and tired of the alpha male stereotype, which Rhys (the Duke) often is.

Last Comment?
If you read and liked the Iron Duke, I strongly recommend reading this:
It gave me such closure for the future of our leads and it was really fun to read!

This novella is set in the Iron Duke world of Ms Brook's. In this, its been 8 months since Mina and the Duke married. They are still adjusting to each other, and the tension caused by their respective jobs. The "mystery" portion of this story is provided partially by Anne, their adopted 11 year old daughter and partially by the murder of a "bounder" (which in this series doesn't have exactly the same meaning as it does in our world. In the Iron Duke world, it refers to those who "bounded out of England/Europe" to save themselves from the Mongol invasion. But bounders are still looked down on by those who remained in England.)

It is nice to catch up with these 2 and see how they are doing. We also did a minor catch up with Mina's constable and his wife (who had appeared in another short story set in this world.)

This is a very nice continuation of the first Iron Duke book, with a self-contained mystery plot included in the further examination of what it is like when Rhys and Mina are married. It also puts a spotlight on Rhys' friend, Scarsdale - he really needs his own novella or novel.

And I loved that Mina decided to take that young girl who helped her in the Iron Duke under her wing and basically become her family. This is very much a Mina story. Rhys is there, but only as support or foil or sexual object ^^.

Oh and there's the first official ball of Rhys and Mina ^^.

I had to have more, it was imperative. And this was every bit as much enjoyable, ass-kicking fun as the first.

In addition to that, we get the continued development of life with Rhys and Mina. They're now married and poor Rhys is a basketcase, trying to come to terms with the danger that Mina faces everyday as an inspector. I love the way they work on it together, the way their relationship is evolving. LOVE.

Another interesting case in Meljean Brook's amazing steampunk London world!

For those people who love HEA and then some... Just like Julia Quinn's the Bridgestones extra, or even more so this short story was perfect. I loved that we got to know how Mina and the Iron Duke struggle to adjust to married life and having a family who loves you. I also have to say it was great satisfaction to read more about Newcastle, Anne and of course Scarsdale. I do hope we get to know what happened to Scarsdale and his marriage in the next book.
He deserves happiness, too!!

Rounding up to 4.

I do love this series and it was a treat to get a bit of Mina, Rhys & Scarsdale. Oh Scarsdale. I can't spoil it, but I really want one of my friends to finish this so we can discuss.

A little bit of action, romance still going strong. A very fine way to spend a couple of hours.

Back with Detective Inspector Mina Wentworth and her Iron Duke. It was fun to catch up with this pair in this novella. I came back and read this after I finished all of the novels currently written in the series. There has not been a disappointment yet. Well developed characters, fantastic world building, adventure, and romance. Steampunkish? So fun!

Not sure what invisible city the title is referring to but there's at least as much relationship development in this novella as there was in the entire The Iron Duke as Mina and Rhys slowly learn to actually talk to each other.
