Not So Vanilla Pete

Rate this book
Thinking before speaking isn’t my strong point. I’m a victim of circumstance. In this case, the circumstance is I’m about to come face-to-face with my mortal enemy at my class reunion. I can’t let Blair Tate Williamson one up me again. Not this time.

This time, I’m ready for her.

What I’m not ready for is how astronomically bad I am at making decisions on the fly. Not only did I blurt out to the world that I have a fiancé, but I dragged my childhood friend, Pete, into my delusion.

It’s only one night, though. How much damage can it cause?

A lot, apparently, because now I not only have to make everyone believe Pete and I are an actual couple, but I have to fight to keep my emotions at bay and not fall for him.

Can I pull off this charade or will going through with it ruin everything?

Pete & Penny have been friends for years. But when Penny is invited to a school reunion she agrees to go but needs to find someone to pretend to be her fake fiancé so she can prove to her bitchy friend that she is happy & settled in her life. Cue Pete, who Penny gets in touch with again to ask to be her pretend husband-to-be, but in the years he’s been out of her life he’s now changed into a rather sexy guy. Pete, on the other hand, has always loved Penny and it doesn’t take a lot of persuading for him to agree to her scheme.

Typical book where ‘geeky nerd’ suddenly becomes ‘sex god’ overnight. Girl doesn’t think of him at all in years then all of a sudden he’s ALL she can think of.
I just didn’t really like it. Too much felt ‘off’ with me about the entire story.
I mean, what started off as a story about a fake engagement and a school reunion ended up into a kind of farce about two old friends who can’t be together but can’t live without each other either. I thought their relationship was kind of toxic. Pete for me was obsessed with Penelope and it didn’t come across as very healthy at times.

But there were so many irritations/annoyances in this book that I don’t know where to start…

Why on EARTH do these book characters feel that they simply MUST go to a school reunion?! Almost like they feel that they’d get struck by lightning if they didn’t! You can say the word ‘no’, you know??
But good grief, a fake engagement, really? Not just that but a pretend proposal, ring, dates, photos…. I mean, come on. Who would go to those lengths just to make out your life is as good as everyone else’s? It was ridiculous. I found myself reading this with more & more disbelief as it went on. Is it real? Is it pretend?
I must admit that reading the words ‘fake engaged’ over & over did start to get a bit boring after a while. And if Penny ‘chewed the inside of her lip/cheek’ one more time I thought I’d scream!

One minute Penny doesn’t know what she wants, the next she’s turning up at Pete’s place with no underwear on! I mean, the sexual build-up got a bit ridiculous and rather dragged on. I also found Pete a very hot/cold sort of character. I didn’t always like the way he spoke or acted towards Penny. He’s in love with her but the beautiful words he says to her are… “Do you want me to f**k you?” Wow, such a charmer. I wasn’t sure whether I liked the way he spoke about her like he owned her either. And what hotel would let a man know what room a woman is staying in? That’s all kinds of wrong.

And why do some books have to be quite so vulgar & smutty?? Not just with sex scenes but with language. For me it doesn’t add anything to the story whatsoever.

Btw, what is wrong with vanilla ice-cream?? This book made it sound like it was the worst flavour in the universe!

Started off Great

I found this story from a kindle vella group and was hooked from the beginning. I came back wanting to read more not caring how many tokens it would cost but the story took a turn. Penelope became selfish and whinny. A flip flopper who got on my nerves. I found myself skipping over part…I hate a weak female in in books. I was rooting for Pete and Penelope in the beginning but towards the end I was hoping Pete would find someone else deserving of his love. The ending felt rush. I would recommend this book if you love a romantic comedy.

This is a cute and spicy second chance romcom. Penelope and Peter have been friends forever, and when they are high school reunion, invite comes in, Penelope panics and asks Pete to be her date however, she may have lied about him being her fiancé. Pete, who’s had a crush on this girl forever, says yes, and from there everything spirals. The strife is understandable and I think the author handled it pretty well. This does have an HEA and the story to get there definitely has some bumps and twists, but it’s a cute story.
