“I don’t know. I mean—I’m straight. You were right. But—yeah, maybe there was a bit of a vibe. Is that weird?”
"I’m pretty irresistible, really.” Ryan leaned back in his chair and smiled smugly. “I have this effect on a lot of people.”
I snorted. “Yeah, okay.”
“I’m serious, man. It’s a burden. I mean—I don’t want to disappoint you all, but there’s only so much Ryan to go around.” His eyes were dancing, and if we’d been somewhere private, if I’d been a couple feet closer to him, I think I might have tried to kiss him.

The next part was a bit tricky, but I felt like I had to say it. “Justin—that was the lesson that I wanted to take from Justin’s life. You know, like as a memorial. He didn’t get to live as long as he should have.” I was pretty sure I could get through the next part without choking up, so I kept going. “But I’m still here. So I feel like I need to live enough for both of us, you know?”

“And you can have lots more practice, after I tell everyone at work! So, what terminology are you going with? Full-on gay, or are we saying you’re bisexual? Bi-curious? Oooh, maybe just ‘queer’—that’s what all the cool kids are being these days.”

“How’re the Olympics going?”
“The twentieth floor has a commanding lead—we’re thinking we should be checking for steroids.”
“That’s some interesting team building you’re doing, there. Hey, do you and Ryan want to come over for dinner, sometime? Like, is it that much of a thing? Is he going to come out with us on Saturday? Or are you going to betray your friends and go out with your new man, alone?”
“Danny, I wish there were more words that I could use to tell you to fuck off.”
“Well, it doesn’t really matter what words you use—it’s not like I’m listening to you, anyhow.”
“Nice. See ya, Danny.”

Another good short story in the Dark Horse series. I enjoyed the banter and bicker between the guys. And while Into the Light was a fun and sexy read, I felt it was also thoughtful. Seeing Chris dealing with his curiosity and genuine interest for guys, and one guy in particular, the short story ended up being really worthwhile. Bottom line, I'd love to read more about Chris and Ryan and the gay thing.

As a nice bonus, Into the Light is a FREEBIE.

Recommended read.

P.S.
You should read the entire series. Jeff…you'll always be my favorite of the trio. <333

“I was naked, and incredibly turned on, with a man. It didn’t feel as strange as I’d anticipated, to be honest.”

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ Well, I wanted Ryan to be happy just wasn't quite expecting it like this. 😂 When I said I wanted Ryan to find a special someone, Chris really was not the one I had in mind?!! Not even a thought!!!??? 🙅🏻‍♀️ 🤦🏻‍♀️ But, I guess that's what it felt like for Chris when he stepped Into the Light, and thought that maybe he was lucking out with women was failing because there was a part of him that was missing, or heck, even not connecting in the way that he wanted or expected from in a relationship. And Ryan was probably the best guy for the job, who would offer him a no strings attached kinda gig, or heck, even one where he tells Chris that it's okay for him to hand the reins to him to take care of him. 🥺

“Maybe I needed to broaden my horizons.”

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ It's definitely an interesting take - not that I would know, but it was that newfound look at what he wishes to find with someone that made Chris comfortable enough to -- not exactly experiment, but take a risk with entertaining the idea that he could have a special connection with someone like his best friends had. 😔 Maybe my idea of what a friend is, is different, but I could have lived without the comments or jabs and jokes from Dan and Evan; yeah, he's their bud, but there's only so much ribbing I can take, until my own heart can't tell the difference between sincerity and jocularity. 😕

“He makes it seem like everything’s okay. If I want to try, that’s fine...”

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ I do respect Ryan for being so careful and mindful of Chris throughout; it may have come of as hesitant or even self-doubting, but he didn't want Chris to make a decision on impulse, simply out of curiosity that would 'turn your whole world upside down'. 🥲 It was not exactly a spicy scene, but it did awaken something feral and hopeful in Chris, so job well done, I guess. Plus, it was a quid pro quo kind of arrangement, so who knows? Maybe there's happiness in the stars for them, after all. 💟

This short novella is Ryan and Chris' story......Chris is straight...or so he THINKS;))))

"I don’t know. I mean—I’m straight. You were right. But—yeah, maybe there was a bit of a vibe. Is that weird?” “I’m pretty irresistible, really.” Ryan leaned back in his chair and smiled smugly. “I have this effect on a lot of people.” I snorted. “Yeah, okay.”

Ryan is Dan's friend and at one point his almost lover and Chris is Dans's best friend and he works for Evan. Evan also hates Ryan but not going into that because you need to read the books to find out why;)

Ryan is so patient with Chris trying to ease him into this new "mini-midlife crisis." It's so cute because Chris is usually so confident but not so much now.....he's extremely confused and unsure about what he is doing. This book had me smiling the entire time I was reading!!!

"Not totally sure, no. But—I’d be up for dinner, at least. If you want.” And then the nerves came back. “Or some other meal. Or some other time. Or, not at all, you know, if you’re busy. I mean, you just got back to town, and I’m sure you’ve got stuff to do with the band, and everything.” I finally managed to stop. “Or if I need to wash my hair? Was that going to be next?” Ryan sounded amused,"

Of course everyone finds out about Chris' new identity crisis and Evan, being his sarcastic self as normal, decides to give him some advice........

"Evan shook his head, his face serious. “No, man, if you’re going to be gay, you need to learn the rules. You have to tell all your friends everything about your sex life. In graphic detail. That’s the way it goes. The whole ‘don’t kiss and tell’ thing—that’s just for with chicks. With guys, you don’t have to pretend to be a gentleman.” He waited for a reaction, but I didn’t know what to say, so he continued. “Also, you’ll need to start wearing your pants a bit tighter—men are visual, and we want to see the goods. And if you could figure out some way to develop a slight lisp, that’d be best, I think.”

“You are the worst gay-guide I’ve ever had.”

Evan is still my favorite:)))))))

This is a short book only 75 pages, it wasn't my favorite novella in this series but it was good:))))

Pick up this series and READ people you will not be disappointed!!!!!!!!

3 stars!

Into the Light is focusing on Chris and while I liked him in the first book of the series, I haven’t been a big fan of him moving out to the farm. I have the feeling that Jeff, Evan and Dan’s relationship is too complex to lose a lot of time with other characters. I however liked Into the Light just fine. It hasn’t been a secret that Chris has been thinking about his sexuality and the possibility of being interested in men and he is finally ready to figure things out.

I really liked Ryan as a character in the previous installment. Compared to Chris, he has clearly been a secondary character and has not been floating in the direction of becoming a fourth main character. That might have made things easier for me to enjoy his appearances. The dynamics between him and Chris have been very interesting and I could imagine their story in a full-length novel, maybe some kind of spin-off.

Now that we learned more about Chris, I really hope that he is going to be a little less present in the third full installment of the Dark Horse series.

Woohoo, this was Chris' turn to fall head over heels, and it just so happened to be with a man!! Not previously having had any experience with men didn't stop him from knowing that something was just not working with women, so why shouldn't he give men a try!! And the man he chose was Ryan, who had had a little fling with Dan when Dan had first moved to California, I loved Ryan and I love Chris, so this was a perfect pairing as far as I'm concerned. 4 stars

I love everything Kate Sherwood writes. Chris has always been a great character, so to have a bit of his story was great. Also good to see Ryan again. But Evan had the best line "Carrying a chair? Is that a euphemism ? What does that mean?" just love it!

I loved this one! A bit longer than some of the other extras so we got to see a bit of a relationship actually develop between Chris and Ryan. I looove that Chris ended up with a guy too, and I love even more that its Ryan. Ryan is so sweet, and back in book one when I still hated Evan and didnt care that much about Jeff, I was really disappointed that Dan and Ryan didnt work out. So happy that Ryan gets his own HEA! Not in this short tho. Thats later.

I always had the feeling that Chris wasn't quite a straight as he thought he was, I also couldn't quite shake the feeling he might want or have wanted more from Dan.
( and in an ideal world, I would have loved a series about Dan, Justin and Chris, alas, it didn't work out that way)
Ryan is back in the picture, but Evan can keep his panties on, he's now looking at Chris, and Chris is looking back.
It's a cute, short free addition to this series and I'm actually really glad that Chris gets someone to call his own.

I love Chris in the other stories and it was fun to see him take center stage (and to get some of his asides about Dan, Evan and Jeff.) It was also nice to see Ryan back and to find a little more complexity under his laid-back appearance. I look forward to more of this relationship in a longer work in the future, and I'm grateful to Kate Sherwood for all the free tastes of this series that she has given us in recent months.

I enjoyed Chris exploring things with another guy. I want to know more about where they decided to take it, though. This story takes place before the third book in the series, but it barely got a mention in book 3, so I'm just not sure where Chris and Ryan take things. The ending was HFN, but it left things open for an HEA that I would most definitely be interested in reading about.

Ahh, the novella I've been waiting for. 'Into the Light' is the story of Chris and Ryan. Or perhaps more appropriately, it's the story of Chris's awakening. Having two best friends be gay, first Justin, and then Dan, Chris is completely okay with the whole "gay thing" as he calls it when teasing Dan. Here though, I got the opportunity to see inside his head, and since Chris is one of my favorite characters, I really loved that. I got to understand his thought processes, and what makes him tick. The things that annoy him and confuse him. But I also got to see that Chris really is the amazing man I'd thought he was.

If you remember, Ryan is the guy whom Dan had just started tentatively seeing before Evan got all jealous, and then Ryan's band got picked up by a record label and went out on tour. The fact that Evan's company owns the record label had no bearing on this, of course. Anyway, Ryan and the band are back in town for a few months of writing new music that they can sit down and record. Ryan is such an easy, laid-back guy to hang around with, and Chris is completely honest about being clueless as to what he's doing, or if he even wants anything to happen. Chris just knows that he's not found the right woman yet, and he really wants the kind of love and commitment that Justin and Dan had, and that Dan is building with Evan and Jeff. Who knows? Maybe he'll find it with a man.

Kate Sherwood took this, Chris's awakening, into a whole new arena than what I was expecting. I love it when an author does that. I'm not going to say much about it, because it would be a spoiler, and I really don't want to ruin anyone else's enjoyment of this story. Just know that in order for Chris and Ryan to find what they'd both been looking for, they both had to do some changing in terms of their expectations. It was insanely exciting watching it happen.

Again, thank you, Kate, I'm still loving these men!

I loved this!! It's a little bit set apart from the original books because it doesn't focus on Dan, Evan, and Jeff, but on Chris instead - but I loved Chris and his humour throughout the first few installments and I very much enjoyed his narration here.

This story is also a bit different because it's actually written in past tense (unlike all the other stories in this series I've read so far) and in first-person perspective. Which really suits Chris's story.

There are a few hints in the previous installments (especially in Head Shy) that Chris isn't as strictly straight as he has been described so far - and in this little add-on he explores this possibility. Not for the sake of experimentation but for the sake of maybe finding something he's been looking for for a long time - just in a different place than he'd looked at before. And this honest, genuine, and pretty fearless sentiment of his is what makes this story so damn great. Man, I really love Chris.
The fact that this exploration involves Ryan (whom I really liked when Dan got to meet him in Dark Horse) - well, that's just the icing on the cake.

A really fantastic part of this series!!! Optional to read, yes, but oh so lovely and satisfying.

Another awesome short story in the Dark Horse series!

This was one was about Chris and Ryan, two characters I love and am so happy to see them get a little more attention. Chris's two best friends are gay (Justin and Dan), and while he likes to be with women he is starting to feel like there is a connection he is missing in his relationships. And in the last book Out of the Darkness (Dark Horse, #2) by Kate Sherwood we witness an interesting and enlightening talk between Evan and Chris about this topic and Chris's openness and curiosity about a relationship with a man.

And I really enjoyed getting to know Ryan better, how he thinks, and why Dan was so attracted to him early in the series. I could read a entire book about these two and not just these short novellas. I hope the author gives us her fans that opportunity one day!

Loved this!!!

Chris is been a great a character all along the whole series, very funny and laid back, the best straight friend of Justin and Dan. Did I say straight? Well in this short history we'll see if Chris has a mere curiosity or wants to change sides. I always thought that this was going to happen, but maybe with another character.

Very enjoyable short, hot, reading , and at difference of the other books this is written in first person.

I've been struggling with this series for awhile now, but I've kept it on my open series list to try and finish. But I was last in this series in Jan 2024 and I think this is my clue to hang it up. It honestly took me a good portion of this small novella to try and remember the characters.

I think I was hoping that Chris's story was going to change my mind on this author, but nope. I don't think this author is for me.

While I liked this addition to the series and appreciated the free download, I'm not sure how it fit into the rest of the series. I say that because I am reviewing this after I've already completed the series and I was a little confused why we didn't hear from Ryan again. At any rate, I still enjoyed the story as more of a standalone between one of my favorite characters, Chris, and a character that previously didn't really make much of an impact to me, Ryan. Early in the series, Ryan was more of a red-shirt character where I didn't really care what happened to him in the long run. I'm glad he was there for Dan when Dan needed comfort, but him moving to pursue his rock star dreams was pretty convenient to the story. So while I think it's interesting that Chris is finally pursuing some of his latent gay curiosity, I'm not sure how this can work out since Ryan is still a rock star. But I enjoyed the story even if it's only an HFN with no closure even after the final book of the series.

Another wonderful story from the Dark Horse world. I really liked Ryan in the previous installments. I really like him in this one as well. It was a very interesting story about Chris exploring new worlds. I laughed over Evan and Dan's reactions. I live in a small town, so the fact that the gossip had taken less than 12 hours to get to the barn was hilarious and true to life. Fabulous! I could read about these guys forever. Thanks Kate for continuing to give us such great stories!

It was good to welcome Chris to the fold, I hope we get to see more of him and Ryan. Short story, but so very well written. This author writes some of the best sex scenes in this genre. Wowee!

One niggle for ALL of this author's writing: The overabundance of "Yeah, okay" tags. Every other reply from a character is that phrase. Couldn't somebody do a search and replace, after the manuscript is finished?

This was Chris’s story “experimenting” with Ryan. I loved that Chris is exploring his options but this feels all too contrived for me – like what the fuck suddenly happened? I suspected the gaydar during the first book was a bit conspicuous but I never thought the author would go with this direction. Bold move though. Ooh and the editing were not so good in this shortie – Taylor / Tyler? Got me confused just a tiny bit.

Awww. I loved this one! I adore Chris and I loved Ryan's quiet confidence. There was something I liked in him immediately when we met him in Dark Horse, and I was kinda sad when he and Dan didn't work out. I'm glad that he found Chris. I could honestly read an entire series of these two. Maybe with a little luck, we'll get one. I can dream anyway. ;)
