I found this book a little difficult to get in to at first but I was very pleased that I stuck with it. It has very interesting and thought provoking ideas/themes. The ending was fantastic and really enticed me to continue with the series. I can't wait to start the next book!

I did receive an ARC of Jennifer’s Vow in exchange for a review; however, all my thoughts and opinions are my own. Now with that out of the way, let’s get to the good part.

Jennifer’s Vowis the first book in the Gaia’s Daughters series, a speculative science fiction fantasy novel where artificial intelligence becomes a normal(ish) part of living, from controlling the taxi system to being your boss. Here, we follow our main characters Jennifer and Vijay as they find themselves connected by a prophecy that goes as deep as Gaia, the mother of Earth herself. Labeled leaders of the resistance, the pair are tasked with building a group large and powerful enough to lead the world in a human resistance movement against the AI. As you might have guessed, this isn't exactly an easy task, especially considering their different backgrounds; Jennifer is a sex worker, abandoned by the system and orphaned at 14, and Vijay comes from a well-off family and works at the Mercury Theater as a light technician. However, despite their current status, they both are able to come together to lead the resistance.

To be completely honest, I had no clue what I was getting into when I picked this book up since I don’t read much sci-fi, but I have to say that Kevin put his writing skills to work, somehow managing to seamlessly merge both the natural world and technology in the ongoing war of human against AI advancements. Each character has their individual ideals about AIs taking over, fitting their upbringings which we can see being explored between characters, especially Vijay and Ron, his best friend who believes that the addition of AI had been beneficial to the human race.

I really enjoyed reading Ron’s story and how he communicates with the different AI systems (Fatima, his boss, and the Otto bots that work in the cafes). Seeing this world from a different perspective really helps to slow down the pace of the book while also building our curiosity behind the AIs. I really hope to see more of his perspective in the upcoming additions to this series.

***** S P O I L E R S…kind of *****

While there are some things that I loved about this book, there were also some events that stood out to me that I didn’t like, mostly with Jennifer and Vijay’s relationship; it felt too rushed, especially since it was initially introduced as a contract. There were moments in the story where Jennifer was having trouble coming to terms with her past and her relationship with Vajay, and he would somehow make the situation about him, and so does so a few times throughout the novel. I do have to say that his attitude does change for the better towards the end, but it did throw me off while reading.

Overall, it was a good read for getting back into the sci-fi genre, and I am definitely planning on finishing this series!

Very enjoyable and interesting characters

I would recommend this book. I quite enjoyed Jennifer and Vijay’s relationship and following their character’s growth. The plot line is fascinating considering the current issue of AI. I am looking forward to the following books which I have already purchased.

Jennifer’s Vow is the first of what promises to be an enigmatic and enthralling series by Kevin Coleman. The book takes place in the future where Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be found as commonly as humans, as the book starts with both Gaia and a master AI awakening as the balance between AI and humans is thrown off kilter.

Jennifer Dupont has lived a hard life, having lost her parents, and being thrown into the system before becoming a sex worker for survival. Vijay is a technician at the Mercury Theatre and is inexperienced with women until an AI named Gabriel throws Jennifer and Vijay together.

Suddenly, Vijay finds himself encouraged to become a leader in the upcoming revolution with Jennifer by his side as his mentor in leading and his life partner. Jennifer begins to dive deeper into her journey, as she is visited by a spirit panther, and she must figure out her purpose and what it means to love someone.

While it took me a while to get into the book waiting for the characters and storylines to be blended, once they came together, I could not turn the book's pages fast enough. The love story between Jennifer and Vijay starts slowly as Jennifer is still overcoming her past, but it grows into a genuine friendship, partnership, and relationship. What I enjoyed also was watching the two grow to love each other deeply as they overcome the obstacles set in their path.

Jennifer’s journey, appealed to me and my own beliefs, as she investigates this spirit panther and what the message for her is. The journey itself moves along well throughout the book and I can’t wait to see where this leads Jennifer in the rest of the series. Her character development is woven well into the book without analyzing or feeling like her past is being judged, which I also enjoyed.

The revolution Vijay is leading raises many questions about AI, as this topic is becoming very relevant in today’s world. I found it interesting and I thoroughly enjoyed watching Vijay rise and build his team as his friend Ron was going through his own journey with AI. I look forward to seeing how both Vijay and Ron’s relationship with AI will impact their friendship in the series.

I have already obtained my copy of Jennifer’s Blessing, the next in the Gaia’s Daughters series, as the cliffhanger we are left with at the end of Jennifer’s Vow wouldn’t allow for any other option. I would recommend this book and would enjoy any discussion of the book with fellow readers.
