Darwin LeOra Teilhet and Hildegarde Teilhet were American authors who worked separately as well as together. After producing several detective novels in the first part of their career they moved on to spy fiction.

Novels were published by Darwin Tielhet, Darwin L. Teilhet, Darwin and Hildegarde Teilhet or his pseudonyms, Cyrus Fisher (juvenile fiction), William H. Fielding and Theo Durant.

I picked this up at some book sale decades ago because I live at St. Louis -- on th Mississippi. Having finally read it, I found it a great adventure.

It took me a while to get into the story because the main character, Horace Owens, thinks too much of himself in the beginning, but this is a coming-of-age story, and after many struggles, he matures.

I read this book because I am interested in steamboats and history. The novel is set in 1832 and seems to be well researched. It includes an interesting portrayal of Abraham Lincoln at the age of twenty-three, who plays a small but important role in the novel.
