iBooks was promoting this one as a fun new YA book so I picked it up. Couldn't even finish it, it was that bad. The girls "chirped" all the time, the guys smirked and threw punches, and there were typos all over the place. Not to mention, the author set the book in California but is clearly British herself, and didn't bother to change any of the lingo or spelling (Tell me, what California 17-year-old wears jumpers and trousers?). There was no character development and the whole thing just...sucked. Don't read it. It was like reading poorly edited fanfiction.
I haven't actually finished this book, but right now, I'm about to give up on it. Considering it's a Wattpad story, I'm not really surprised. Don't get me wrong,; for a story originally posted on a site like WattPad, this is good, and I'm not surprised at the number of readers that it has on that site. HOWEVER, I was hoping for something a little bit better than what I got.
Allow me to explain. I didn't find this story on WattPad; my mom told me about how a 17 year old had gotten a 3-book deal with Random House after the publishing company found her story online. Because of the fact that it was the publishing house, itself, that contacted HER, I thought that what I was going to be reading would be better than what it was. I'm an avid Twilight fanfic reader, so I know the story of ELL James/50 Shades of Grey/Master of the Universe. IMHO, The Kissing Book is only slightly above FSOG in the quality of writing. Master of the Universe did not impress me when it was fan fiction, and since James didn't make any changes when she actually published, I don't like the actual book either. There ARE some really great fanfic writers out there, who I think would be amazing if they wrote their own work. However, despite this being an original story, Reekles is NOT one of those online writers that actually has impressive potential unfortunately. Her story is way too cliched. Yes, most YA fiction books that aren't paranormal romances usually do have a major cliche in the plot/storyline; however, the cliche doesn't take up the entire story in YA books that are actually decent and bearable. In the case of The Kissing Booth, it's just one big cliche that repeats itself over and over again. I mean, all that happens is the following:
Lee and Elle hang out Guys flirt with Elle without her realizing it Noah gets possessive and beats someone up; Elle gets mad Noah and Elle fight Noah and Elle make up and then make out
That process continually repeats itself over and over again. There's no change that occurs. The constant whiplash of the two romantic leads was irritating, and for Elle making a huge deal about how she had never kissed a guy before, she sure jumped ship quickly when she slept with Noah after only making out with him once. I mean, really? And then, the next morning, she completely regrets it. Just, ugh...
First of all, let me say this: I get it. I understand why Elle fell for Noah. The hot bad boy who turned into a romantic guy. Who wouldn’t want that?! I’m so happy I read this book. Even though, from my point of view, the movie was better this time, let’s not forget that the idea came from the book. And yes, the movie was 80% different. A lot of aspects were changed. But still, the most important things were kept. And that’s why I cried like a baby when I saw the movie. And yeah, maybe I shed a tear while reading the last pages of the book, but it wasn’t the same. The movie gave me chills. Elle was such a naive girl and Noah was so misunderstood. But they were so perfect for each other! At least in the book they were. On screen, Noah was way too tall! And Elle could have been prettier. Still, the concept, the story: 5 stars! 😍 My playlist for the book: Benjamin Ingrosso - Dance you off Benjamin Ingrosso - Fall in love Benjamin Ingrosso - Do you think about me Ed Sheeran - Perfect Halsey - Alone Shawn Mendes - Youth Favourite quote: “So this is what love does to people. It really does turn people into saps.”
P. S. Can you imagine that this obssesion with the movie and the book started because I saw the movie trailer 3 days ago on Facebook?! 😮
For brevity's sake, I will limit my review to one main reason it was terrible: it was written by a 17 year old girl. The writing was ok (I'm being generous, because she is after all 17.) The main problem is a 17 year old girl can't write realistic fiction realistically. The author writes about exactly the kind of world that a 17 year old THINKS they live in: no rules, no accountability, no consequences. A world where you get want you want, just by wanting it.
The world according to Kissing Booth: (warning, the examples are spoilers-ish:) 1. Noah gets into fights all the time with no consequences. Tell me a high school in the country that does not suspend for fighting. Really. 2. Turns out Noah (who is captain of the football team) suddenly gets accepted to Harvard! Even though he never seems to study or worry about grades. 3. Parents allow all sorts of things: underage drinking ("Just don't do it again!") and hotel rooms after prom when your daughter just turned 16! 4. Elle goes from never kissing a boy to sex with her best friend's brother in no time flat, all with little emotional fall out! Sure. 5. Noah, although violent, super controlling, and emotionally manipulative changes! (I blame Beauty and the Beast for this one. Just be really really nice, and he will come around girls! Love conquers all, especially the love of teenagers!)
Obviously, I am not a fan. I would even go as far as to say, I think it's a little irresponsible.
I read this for the first time and was very surprised that it is much better than the movie! Is it still an amazing book? No, but I can say it is better than the movie adaptation! The movie added so many elements that weren’t present in the book, for example: the friendship rules. These rules are in the movie between Elle and Lee, but in the book there is no rules at all. I really disliked the rules in the movie as I found them to be problematic, but the fact they weren’t in the book made me so happy!
I did a full spoiler filled reading vlog on my YouTube channel, you can check that video out here to hear more of my thoughts: https://youtu.be/nPucsXH4LXk
The utter insipidity, the fundamental mediocrity of this, coupled with the fact that not only Random bought it, but Netflix made a film of it, and that millions of teens fell for it, gives me a major fright. I mean. Major.
Thank God I regularly see several teenage readers here on GR who show a markedly higher level of erudition.

pre review
everyone is obssesed with this and watching the movie. diana is speshul because she is reading the book.
“Just think. All this, just from the kissing booth.”
First things first . . . . .
I would give that cat every single one of my dollars.
Now let’s get on with the show.
When nearly every minute of your life serves as a reminder that . . . .
Sometimes you need a little story like The Kissing Booth to help you feel like a kid again. Imagine my surprise when I discovered this was written by a kid. A 17 year old to be exact and she actually wrote it unlike just slapping her name on it like the trainwreck which was Girl Online. Hell my nearly 17 year old kid still can’t figure out the difference between there, their and they’re so this little gal gets serious kudos.
The story here is simple – girl and boy (Elle and Lee) have been best friends literally since their birth (on the same day, in the same hospital). They’ve maintained their friendship throughout the years by always following a simple set of rules – the most important being that Elle’s crush on Lee’s brother Noah would remain unrequited for eternity. But when the school carnival rolls around and Elle and Lee find themselves running the most popular booth of all, things start going a little sideways . . . . .
Which leads to Elle and Noah following the sage advice of one R. Kelly . . . .
Ha! But seriously, they decide to keep it on the down low.
What can go wrong, right?
If you grew up on John Hughes movies and are not a member of Generation Butthurt, you might find this enjoyable as well. Or you can make me morph into Mallory Archer and want to scream at you . . . .
Because you refuse to stop being obstinate long enough to attempt to understand the points Beth Reekles was trying to get across. Since I don’t words so good, I got what she was putting down just fine and appreciated her efforts of including a character with some anger management issues as well trying as to educate via humor about sexism. I thought this was adorable . . . .
“A friend is someone who knows all about you and still loves you.”
----Elbert Hubbard
Beth Reekles, a bestselling English author, has penned a sweet and pretty entertaining teenage contemporary fiction called, The Kissing Booth that revolves around a female high school teenager, who with her bestie, plans to run a kissing booth for their school's summer spring carnival, sadly, the girl, who has never been kissed or ever dated anyone, falls a victim to her bestie's older brother's Casanova charms and hence in secret, they begin their summer fling, but what happens when her only best friend for life finds out that she is dating his older brother? A cheesy and cliched rom-com drama is what this book has to offer, one time read, but I guess, the story could have been much better. And certainly, please not a movie on this book! It's a total pain.
Synopsis:
Meet Rochelle Evans: pretty, popular--and never been kissed. Meet Noah Flynn: badass, volatile--and a total player. And also Elle's best friend's older brother...
When Elle decides to run a kissing booth for the school's Spring Carnival, she locks lips with Noah and her life is turned upside down. Her head says to keep away, but her heart wants to draw closer--this romance seems far from fairy tale and headed for heartbreak.
But will Elle get her happily ever after?
Elle, a high school junior, is back from the summer haze that turned her into a beautiful young woman. And little did she knew that she caught the eye of every guy in her school. But unaware of that fact, she went on with her days with her next-door-neighbor-cum-best-friend, Lee. Lee is a childish kind of guy, who protected Elle like his own sister, practically, they acted like twin siblings as they were born on the same day and at the exact same time. So together, they plan a Kissing Booth for charity on their school's spring carnival. But to Elle's surprise, who has never been kissed before, found herself kissing the guy whom she had a crush on like forever, and that is, Lee's older brother, Noah. Now Elle and Lee made a bunch of childish friendship rules when they were kids, so dating or kissing or sleeping with Noah would be big no-no for Elle and Lee's friendship. Anyhow, Noah and Elle begin to see each other secretly, but hell breaks loose, when Lee finds out about their relationship. What will happen then?
The author's writing style is okay, not that great. The plot lacks emotions, hence the readers will fail to connect with the characters and their emotions. The dialogues are crappy and way too cheesy, no one, especially, no teenager now talk or communicate in this fashion ever. (For realistic dialogues, refer to the book, 13 Reasons Why). As a whole, the story is "too been there, done that" kind, it's a very common story, when a girl is falling for her best friend's brother. But what the book lacked strongly was the true essence of friendship and its bond between Elle and Lee, instead of shedding too much light on the immature teenagish love story between Elle and Noah.
The characters are not at all close to reality, they lack honesty in their demeanor. I felt like reading about a bunch of fashion models who happen to be fictional. So many elements and layers lacked in this book, especially the cast of parental characters, who are supposed to play a strong role in the life of these teenagers, and the transition from having a mother to having no mother in the life of Elle is pathetically depicted in the book. Like I said, the characters lacked to show any kind of emotion, only teenagers action high on their hormones.
But hey, if you want to re-live your teenage summer days blazing in the afterglow of the summer sun and a hot crush's kiss on your lips, then do grab a copy of this book now, as the author has vividly painted the summer days and how teenagers waste it high on alcohol, parties, kisses and one-night stands.
PS: The movie is as pathetic as the book, so don't waste your time in watching it on Netflix. There are better shows and movies streaming currently on Netflix, avoid The Kissing Booth at any cost!
Verdict: There are other better contemporary fiction available in the bookstore, that need your attention, but just not this one!
I had such such high hopes for this, I saw the movie on Netflix, and thought to myself oh maybe this will be a guilty pleasure like The Duff, I literally LOVED that and thought maybe it would be the same for this. Sadly I was wrong, and I'm feeling pretty disappointed to say the least.
Girl is best friend with boy. Boys older brother is a dick. Girl likes the older brother. Older brother is possessive and like to fight. Girl and boy date in secret. Shit hits the fan. It recovers. Oh no... another plot twist. Wait! It's okay again, we can ride off on a bike in the happy sunset (not actually true but you get the meaning.)
1. I don't like the fact that Noah is described to love Violence and that Elle kind of likes it as he wouldn't be him without it. 2. The writing is not the best... I know it was by a young author at the time, but you can tell. 3. No character was likeable. Don't do this, don't do that... HOW dare you do this. On and on. 4. Repetitive. 5. It could of ended at 80%
For the first time in my life I can honestly say the film was better than the book, and I've never felt so let down.
I can't even do an overall because I just want to spit fire at it and be done, hopefully to anyone else who reads this they may like it more than I did.
---------- Pre thoughts So yeah... Netflix has made me intrigued. Maybe one for audiobook? I've got a feeling it's going to be a guilty pleasure like The DUFF: Designated Ugly Fat Friend :) :) :)
I'd recommend this book to younger teens. It's the kind of story I would have lapped up when I was thirteen and fourteen, very fluffy and girly.
I certainly got exasperated at points. I couldn't understand why she (or anyone!) wanted to be with Noah: he was definitely a bully. Threatening and physically hurting other guys just for talking to her? I beg your pardon? He controlled her love life and she never even knew, then when she did find she seemed not to care.
Read this book for nostalgic feelings of being a teeny-bopper who thinks being 16-18 is the best thing ever. Nevertheless, I look forward to reading what Beth Reekles' comes up with in the future.
The kind of story I would have LOVED when I was a young teen.
PS. Drink a cheap and nasty alcopop with this, like a VK or something. Or even some Lambrini. Re-live your under-age-drinking years.
I received a copy of this for free via NetGalley for review purposes.
Not sure how I feel about this. It was...not a healthy relationship most of the time and where were the parents when they didn't come home at night?
I only read this because I wanted to watch the movie and I have this weird, "must read the book before you can watch the movie" kind of thing going on. I'm hoping the movie will be better and more of a true love story.

(Disclaimer: I am not a part of the target audience for this book, being decades past my teen-age years. I am just someone who reads books from all genres.)
I will start off by saying kudos to 17-year old Beth Reekles for being able to write a novel, and for being able to reach such a large number of readers on Wattpad.
With that being said, what follows is a short review, because frankly, I feel like I've devoted too much time to this book already just by reading it and actually being able to finish it.
Reading this was quite painful for the following reasons: - I didn't like Elle/Shelley AT ALL! I was honestly hoping that Noah would get it together and realize that other girls are way better for him...ANY OTHER GIRL! One who would actually care when he storms out and leaves his house for a few days!!!!! - The story dragged because of the reason above. I was seriously hoping for another POV just to escape the "Oh mah gash! I'm pretty? Boys like me? Girls are jealous because I can talk to Noah." nonsense. Seriously, I would've been happy to read what the school janitor thinks of all these. - Noah was smirking soooo much I was afraid his face would stay like that forever.
The only reason I finished it is because I kept hoping and hoping it would get better. And yes....the last chapter made me happy....mwahaha! Hello, Harvard!!!;)
First of all: ich lieeeeebeeee den Netflix-Film!
Going to start this review by saying that I did not know of this book's existence until the film on Netflix came out and I became obsessed with the storyline. I have been a Wattpad member since 2012 and never heard of it, and I'm kinda upset I hadn't because it was actually a really interesting book. Though, I enjoyed the film more... I think because the storyline in the movie was more emotional considering it was VERY different than the book.
Though, it did have its similarities. I found that a few lines between the two were shared, which made me super excited. But, there were some scenes in the book I would've preferred that it had been in the film, but then there were scenes that were right off the page onto the screen.
I think both materials are great on their own. The film has the same characters, same plot line, but a different line-up of events. The book, well, same thing, just some different events, again.
I read this novel in one night, and I can honestly say I barely remember most of it once I finished it. Like I remember a few scenes like party scenes and some scenes I remember that were in the movie too, but not much stuck from the book onto my mind. That's mainly why I scored this book a 3. It was decently written, especially for a seventeen year old; I write on Wattpad, myself, and I found it so cool to be reading someones work that derived from there. But, like I said, it wasn't as memorable as I wanted it to be.
THOUGHTS ON CHARACTERS BELOW UNDER SPOILER TAB.
All in all, I personally give this book 3 stars because though it was great and had an intriguing storyline, though I prefer the movie's portrayal because I found even though it was a film, it had more explanation to things than the book -- which is like NEVER the case.
The movie is very different, but I think I liked the execution of the movie better. This book was a great read for someone who is OBSESSED with the movie as I am, but I don't think it'll really fill your high hopes for the great movie to read the book. I would recommend this book, however, to someone who wants a bad boy romance. But, then again, I'd probably recommend the movie before the book, in this same case scenario.
Yada yada. Another story I've read from Wattpad. Review later. Will try to be nice with this one. Edit 1: Just because a story is very popular in Wattpad, doesn't mean it's good.
_______________________ Well yay, that sucked! Let me go look in the mirror to make sure I didn't pull all my hair out........... I'm exaggerating, of course. It wasn't really bad, I just didn't really like it.
It was more or less flat and not too creative. everything was fine up until the actual kissing booth scene and then everything went steadily downhill from there as I lost my patience little by little.
So just a quick overview so you know what I'm talking about: Rochelle is the main character. Her best friend is a boy named Lee Flynn. His older brother, Noah, is the school bad boy/hottie/player/football player/you've definitely seen him in another book. Noah is tall, has beautiful dark hair, a sexy smirk, and electric blue eyes. Hmmmmm where oh where have I heard that before?? Anyway, Lee and Rochelle, as school council members, need to run a booth for the carnival/festival thing and decide to do a kissing booth. Noah gets in line and the girl at the booth freaked out and made Rochelle take her place, so Rochelle had to kiss Noah. BOOM! Her long-ago crush on him resurfaces in full force.
And here begins a romance. Noah and Rochelle begin seeing each other in secret because she doesn't want to ruin her relationship with Lee. One week after her FIRST kiss, which was at the kissing booth with Noah, she gives her virginity to Noah....
That's not even the main thing I had the issue with. Noah is so controlling! He's very protective of Rochelle and yells at and fights boys who flirt with her, ask her out, harass her...etc. Some of those cases... fine But others? And whenever Rochelle yells at him about it, he argues back that guys are jerks and don't have good intentions (save for him, of course). You don't even want to know how many times this scene played out. They had this Same. Exact. Argument. Sooooo many times I almost thought my kindle spazzed and rewinded! And that made the book seem so ridiculously long! I just couldn't wait for it to be over!!
That being said, I loved Rochelle's relationship with Lee, and Lee's relationship with Rachel (no not Rochelle. Rachel, his girlfriend. A totally different person). Rochelle and Noah's relationship was meh. No chemistry and after two months they were already throwing around I love you's.
I was looking for a cute chick lit that would make me swoon. Sadly, such was not the case here.
Can't say I enjoyed this at all. The thing I can't get over is the age (16) of the main character. She was at parties until 2 in the morning, drinking, jumping up on tables and dancing in front of intoxicated boys, and having sex. On top of that, her father apparently had no problem with all that she was doing, and even merrily sent her out with alcohol when she is underaged ( at least in U.S. standards). Maybe I am being a prude with this, but I am 17 myself reading this and she felt far too young.
Another was the love interest, Noah. He's this super bad boy who gets into fights, has anger issues, and has a reputation as a man-whore. Yet, he's got perfect grades, was accepted into Harvard, and is "secretly sweet and cute." Yeah, okay. Not to mention that his actions made me swear this would turn into an abusive relationship. He gets furious if another guy so much as touches Elle, tells her she has to change her clothes if he finds it too revealing, and pretty much grabs, pulls, and drags her every chance he got. I pretty much ended up hating Noah because of this, but was so relieved when in the end he seemed to stop all of that and became more sweet and gentle.
But my favorite thing about the entire book though? LEE! I swear, that boy is hilarious! And he is by far the best guyfriend in existence. The scenes with him were probably my favorite, and I was soo hoping by some twist Elle would end up with him, even if it was the cliche of best friends falling for each other. If it weren't for Lee, I might've hated this book, and he alone added one star to my rating.
I read this a few months ago, when it was already completed. Therefore, I didn't have to endure the suffering of waiting for the author to update. Wattpad has offered me a lot of stories to read; in fact, some of those I've read have been published. I'm surprised to find The Kissing Booth on Goodreads (I'm not sure why), but it's here and I'm giving it 5 bright stars.
Emotional fangirl: I don't know how I stumbled upon Wattpad, but I sure am glad I did. The Kissing Booth was one of the first few stories I've read. It has got me through a lot of emotions that I fell in love with it. Elle and Noah (Flynn)'s story just draws you to it - to read more, to want more, to fall in love, to get hurt, to ask for more, and leaves you wondering. Even if I'm not a fan of such "endings" because I have a penchant for assurance, I don't care this time. I love it. I love it!
Technical reviewer: One reason why I pursued reading the stories posted by "Reekles" is because she edits her work. She edits it well. This isn't just about getting to post a story and having many people view/read it. The formatting is very clean - with correct punctuation marks, margins, capitalization, quotations, and other stuff. The grammar was checked, too. It was as if you were reading an e-book bought from Amazon or Barnes and Noble. Reekles took the job seriously and it paid off big time!
Not a lot of writers on Wattpad are like her. There are some who also practice the potence of proofreading, but it just so happens that Reekles knows how to get to the hearts of young teens and hopeless romantics looking for a great read.
With the undying emergence of young adult fiction, I think we can expect a lot more from this writer, right here.
If you ship Elle and Lee or just want more of them together but still thinks Elle and Noah is the one true pairing, I recommend you read The Beach House, a novella by Reekles... ONLY if you have read The Kissing Booth, otherwise, it will not spare you some details.
Reading all the other reviews for this book I am quite shocked as to wonder why people have rated it so poorly. The Kissing Booth was an easy read novel which I easily finished in a day.
It is about a 16 year old girl named Rochelle, she also goes by the name Elle or Shelly. Rochelle & her best friend Lee have to come up with an idea for their booth for the carnival at school. After a lot of thinking they finally come up with the idea of creating a Kissing Booth. Lee has an older brother named Noah, who is the typical hot jock / bad boy. Since Lee & Rochelle have been family friends since they were young Rochelle has grown close to Noah since shes sees him all the time. But when it comes to boys Noah is VERY over protective of Rochelle/Elle.
Elle finally convinces Noah to swing by the kissing booth at the carnival but when her friend tricks her into taking her shift she ends up kissing Noah... No, sorry not kiss but make out!! Feelings start to stir as Elle starts to wonder what the kiss meant or if it had meant anything at all.
*****Spoilers***** Elle ends up taking a ride with Noah that afternoon since Lee is too busy with his new girlfriend. When they get to Noah's house one thing leads to another & Elle & him are making out in the kitchen which leads to the bedroom. Before things can get out of hand Elle stops Noah, because she knows he is known for being a player. Elle & Noah decide to continue the 'relationship' (if you can call it that) without letting Lee , her best friend, know.
Its a great summer romance novel if you are into teen romance. Its an easy read & had a good story line to it! Reading this book was a great way to pass the time...
After reading fantasy I usually try to switch it up a bit and read something cute and fluffy and this was definitely NOT it. I´m not gonna tell you what the book is about, read the synopsis, but what I can tell you is that it absolutely SUCKED. Not only is it about the most toxic codependent friendship Ive ever read, which was in no way cute or sweet. It was also full of annoying dialogue, I´ve actually pulled a muscle from all the eye-rolling I did. Not to mention the "romantic" moments weren´t really romantic. Everything bad Noah did was forgotten if he just kissed her or looked hot. That´s not how real life works and I feel bad for any teenage girl who reads this and thinks that this was in any way healthy.
The best part is I would never read it if it wasn´t for netflix. They made a movie based on this book and if you´ve read the book you don´t need to watch it. It´s word for word the same, it SUCKS. Rant over.
I was instantly struck by how young sixteen-year-old Elle was during her drunken state at the party, she was so intoxicated that she almost skinny dipped in front of everyone. I checked to see where the writer was born and discovered that Reekles was British, so that explained everything!
I felt the novel had British written characters living in America. That probably explains why I connected with them so easily as I could recognise their actions through my own school experiences.
I really liked Elle’s friendship with Lee, having grown up doing everything together it has lead to Ella never having a boyfriend and has never been kissed. This explains why her first kiss was so impactful to her.
Lee’s older brother Noah is the guy that stops Ella making a fool of herself at the party, deemed the school badass I honestly think that he has Ella’s best interests at heart. The problem is by being so overprotective of her, he’s actions can seem a little controlling.
During the carnival Ella and Lee help run the Kissing Booth, when she kisses Noah it triggers a world wind romance between the pair. I always felt this was inevitable as she had previously had a crush on him, whilst Noah has always been protective of her...
It was a fast easy read, I mainly read this as was curious to watch the Netflix adaptation afterwards. It certainly evokes the feel of a teenager falling in love for the first time, I really enjoyed it.
