First off lets get the technicalities out of the way. I won this book through Goodreads Read it First. All opinions are my own and I was not compensated in any way for them.

That being said here is my review:

When I saw this book on my Goodreads recommendations list and that it had a giveaway I immediately entered. It is no secret that I love Zombies, and this one looked unique in that the Zombies still had a bit of consciousness left to them.

The book heavily focuses on a female named Amanda and her relationship with Geoff. Amanda is for all intents and purposes a selfish witch. Bored with her relationship to Geoff,She has an affair behind his back, dumps him and then claims she's moving away to go to College. I loathed the character and was just biding my time til she ate it. Even when the Author presents more of her back story, it did nothing to win me over.

The other main character of the book Geoff frustrated me til no end. I couldn't figure out why he'd go to such great lengths to rescue a woman who couldn't even bother to answer his texts, or phone calls for weeks on end. When stuff really starts to fall apart and she finally decides to contact him, rather then telling her off, he rides off like a knight in shining armor to save her. While the character was certainly well written, like Amanda I wanted him to die, rather then root for the character til the end.

My favorite Character had to be Cassandra, I felt so much sympathy for her sad existence. A Mistress to a snake of a man named Joe, She lived it seemed only to please him. When Joe reanimates and attacks her, rather then continuing feeding he lets her "live" so that she can be his bullet sponge and keep him company while he tries to make it back to his wife. By the end I was rooting for her and pretty much only her.

The other couple characters along the way helped move the story along nicely and had enough back story that they didn't feel like plot filler. The Zombies were certainly my favorite part. Sure they were for all intents and purposes Dead but some conscious thought remained and that was fascinating to read. So many books focus on the Humans perspective, I found seeing both just a nice change of pace.

Overall I do recommend, if you like Zombies to read this book. I feel Peter Giglio will be an Author to watch out for in the future. He blended the creepiness of Stephen King and the Undead Lore of George Romero together perfectly. I Truly hope the Author decides to revisit the world. It would be interesting to see how things changed 6months, or a year down the road. I'm going to give this book 4 Stars.

The Blast, a worldwide snowstorm that blanketed the whole planet and brought with it a terminal virus. It came without warning in October and left just as suddenly, but before it left, infected humans started to change and eat the flesh of the living.

The story takes place after the blast and follows six main characters in the zombie infected world, as they try to find balance in their lives. The characters include Geoff, a sad man trying to find what he wants in life and is in love with Amanda, a woman who doesn’t really know what she wants either and is about to be in a fight for her life. The next couple is Ginny a young mother who is trying to save her family and her husband Shane who seems to know more about the zombie virus then anyone, but has his own agenda. The last couple is Cassandra who is a romance novelist having an affair with a married man named Joe who loves his car more than his wife or mistress.

Balance follows the stories of these six people and during the course of the book you see them all go through changes, some of them even become zombies and part of the story is told from the zombie’s point of view. This is what I think makes Balance one of the best zombie stories I’ve ever read.

My only complaints about Balance was that there was one time where the story changed from being in the present to the past which confused me and I was curious as to how much Shane knew about what was going on. Besides that Peter Giglio does what he seems to do best, he creates characters that you can’t help to fall in love with wheather they are good or bad. My favorite character in Balance is Cassandra who doesn’t let a little thing like being a zombie stop her from helping two people in love.

I don’t know of any zombie stories that look at the zombie’s point of view which to me made Balance an original take on the zombie genre. I also liked that the fact that the main hero in Balance was a zombie. Balance is a fun bloody zombie tale that I think you will enjoy even if you don’t like zombie stories.

You get to see what happens to the mind of people when they are faced with a devastated world. And to up the ante, the zombies in this story aren't your garden variety. There is something inside of the walking dead, something from their former lives that thuds deep within their psyche. For some, an overwhelming desire to continue life, with only the need for human flesh being any kind of change. For others, true love still lingers.

But, as they continue on, they slowly lose the humanity.

No matter how strong their will for a normal life is, the insuppressible urge to feed on the living dominates.

The world is no longer the same.

For civilization, for those who survive, and for the dead.

But above all, everything finds balance in this world of the dead.
