2.5 ““The only thing I know for sure is you are trouble, and I wouldn’t want you any other way” stars
Please, Soren prayed, I need more than a body. I need Dany Petyr; I need him like the air I breathe. I haven’t felt this alive in years, and now that we’ve found each other, please don’t take him away from me.
Honestly I do not know what to say about this book, it was a fine read but nothing that blew me away and it really didn’t live up to what I wanted it to be. This book got me interested because it’s marketed as people on different sides of the law (which it’s not by the way, one of the main character is from a crime family but he lives a totally regular life and hates his family, so it doesn’t count, having a shitting family doesn’t make you automatically be on the wrong side of the law. The book was really fun and easy to read, I enjoyed reading it, I just had some issues with it. Mostly, I just didn’t feel like the main characters loved each other, which is kind of important in a “romance” book
Brief summary: Dany is 26, he’s a cook and he’s trying to start a new life and run away from his family. Soren is 30 and a cop in the town where Dany ends up living. Dany and Soren met 3 years ago, had sex a couple of times and then Soren got shot by Dany’s cousin and Dany ran away while Soren was in the hospital.
For what I enjoyed, there was too much of the crime plot but it was really enteresting and engaging. I also really enjoyed both characters. Mostly Soren, Soren is such a solid guy and I really liked him. I can’t really pin-point what I enjoyed about this book but I had a really good time reading it and I wanted to keep reading it, so thats a win in my book.
First, this book was talking to me as if I was supposed to know a lot of backstory about the characters… but how would I? It was really confusing sometimes. I know i’m meant to have read other books before this for maximum understanding (books I haven’t read, of course) but at one point, the book kept me guessing for chapters if these guys had sex with other people when they were separated because it never told me if they did or not, it just assumed that I knew if they did or not, and somehow, i’m sure that wasn’t mentioned in the books in the other series.
Second, there was some hate sex in this which was really hot and I enjoyed it very much.
Third, I really liked how much pining Soren did over Dany, I love a good pining, so much.
Fourth, the investigation to romance ratio wasn’t to my liking. There wasn’t enough romance for me. It was 65% crime and 35% romance, these guys barely interacted, it just didn’t work gor me. The plot was good but lacked lots of romance, I think these guys were in the same room like 6 times in the entire book.
Fifth, one of the biggest thing I don’t like with second chance is when you can’t feel their connection from before and how they fit together and I felt that way here. These people had sex three time and the book tried to convince me that they were in love, and never forgot the other in 3 years. Which just didn’t work for me. I didn’t see how they were meant to be, at all.
Sixth, I liked how Soren was fearful that dany would leave him again, what I didn’t like was how I didn’t feel like Dany never groweled enough to make me forget that he left Soren alone in an hospital bed after the guy got shot. I needed him to say sorry and make me believe that he wouldn’t do it again, but he never did.
Seventh, the guys were always fucking instead of communicating and some of the sex scenes weren’t even that good, it’s such a shame.
Eight, look, I enjoy insta love most of the time but the characters need to actually interact with each other for it to work. These people had sex three times almost three years ago and apparently were in love with each other then. Now 3 years later, they had sex 3 times and had like 5 conversations and they’re in love, still. How? What are you in love with? The other’s dick? Can’t be their personality, you guys barely talked the entire book.
This was a really fun book, I just didn’t feel any spark between the two main characters, and I badly wanted more romance.
I received a copy of this book, and this is my honest review.
I finished this days ago and still remember the storyline but I had to look up couple’s names and that kind of sums up my feelings on this book but I’ll explain so if nothing else I help someone later who wants to read this. One of my 2022 reading goals was to read the books I own that are wasting away in my kindle and I have largely failed. 😂🤷🏻♀️ I have also been trying to figure out if I’d like romance crime books and since I got this book for free recently I went for it.
I actually liked this a lot in the beginning BUT and it’s a huge deal, I felt like I was missing something. This is a brand new series and nothing in the blurb says there’s anything I needed to read before. It’s apparently a spin off that can be read as a stand-alone but lots of things were alluded to especially when describing Dany’s family and I felt lost. Dany and Soren also knew each other 3 years ago, had some kind of 3 day sex fest and then something happened to Soren and Dany left to protect him from his family. This event is never explained properly and when Dany finally confides in someone about their past, details were left out that I needed, wanted to know. These two were having a lot of hate sex in this book but I never got a full picture on why they hated each other. I was missing so many details that this didn’t read as a second chance romance especially since they had only been together 3 times 3 years ago and yet I’m to believe these two had some sort of intense love connection? It didn’t make sense and while the hate sex was good, the lack of lube just sounded painful.
About 50% through, I stopped reading this to look up this author and there’s a reading order on her website for her books. I wish something would have been said about that on the blurb or in the beginning of the book. I’m one of those weirdos that starts at the cover and skims through what is there before the book starts and nothing was mentioned. Apparently, this is a spin off of an 8 book series. That series revolves around taking down the criminals in Dany’s family among other things and in book 8 Dany and Soren are featured and what I felt lost about the entire time happens and then this is their story. Since I own this I considered putting it down and reading that book but because it’s book 8 I am sure I’d be confused if this book was anything to go by. I’m also not sure why this series is called “West Coast Forensics” (WCF) because even though it takes place on the West Coast (Piedras, Washington), the WCF are a group of men that had to be brought in to help the Piedras Police Department. Soren wasn’t part of WCF and Dany is just a chef therefore I found it odd the start of this series would be about 2 guys not even a part of that unit. It looks like subsequent books are about the WCF men and I’m interested except I’d need to read that 8 book series and am I that interested? 🤷🏻♀️
Despite all the issues, I liked the cases and wanted to know the outcomes. I also liked the setting, characters and overall vibe of the book enough to look into some of this author’s other books if not that 8 book series. I think I’d definitely like romance crime dramas as long as I was completely invested in the couple. I liked this couple enough but was rolling my eyes hardcore during some of the scenes near the end and I was never convinced they were true soulmates. It’s taken me days to figure out what to rate this but I’d give the crime part 4 stars, the couple 2 stars so I’m going to give 3 and be done with it.
The description is a bit off when it says, "Two men from opposite sides of the law". Soren is a deputy on the Piedras Island Sheriff Dept., but it would have you believe that Dany is a criminal of some type. He isn't. He's an outstanding chef that just happened to have the bad luck to be born into a major crime family and has had to work his entire life to show that he's not like them nor does he want to be like them. This is also book 1 in the West Coast Forensics series that overlaps the Veiled Intention series and the Shielded Hearts series with all the characters from the two other series either showing up in this one or being mentioned. I find this confusing as some of the books are listed in all three series...UHHHH! I love all 3 series so I'm just going to quit fighting it and whatever Elle Keaton writes I'll read. I really liked Soren and Dany's story and that these two actually tried to work out their problems even though they found themselves right in the middle of a couple of murder and several arson cases that may have been tied to the same suspect. There is more than one "bad guy" that they have to watch out for...and Dany has to learn that he is not responsible for anything that his family has ever done, and he is worth Soren's love.
First of all, I don’t think this works as a standalone spinoff. There’s way to much missing context and it meant there were parts of this book I couldn’t understand at all (like why the main characters weren’t already together, which is kind of a major thing to be kept in the dark about!)
Second, the main characters barely spend any time together in this book. I felt absolutely no emotional connection between these characters.
Finally, the mystery wasn’t very well done. I found some parts really confusing. There are no hints to who the actual bad guys are and there are some ridiculous red herrings.
This was enjoyable...enough. But was it memorable enough? Probably not. At times I was completely engaged and eager for answers but then other times I was a bit confused and miffed. I think part of my struggle was the fact that I didn't have all the backstory or history of the side characters. I love spin-offs but think it's important to have a stand-alone stand...alone. And I don't think I can say that this was enough on its own. Will I continue with this series? I don't think so.....
so i started book 1 bc i have an arc of book 2, and "i might understand more of the characters." but there are more books before "book 1" which meant i was lost. which was, not a great start at all.
i felt like i wasted my time tbh. this was, boring? it was lacking in everything.
romance? Soren and Dany lacked the chemistry. idk if i'm supposed to feel their "love" in the past, or the current, bc i absolutely feel nothing at all between them. it was so.. weird that they keep saying they are madly in love with each other, but had sex thrice?? in the past and now. and their communications suck so badly, they hardly do talk with each other. they had no moments, excluding sex.
crime? uh.. trouble here trouble there, policing here and there. but. did the cops get anything? nada. it was Dany, a chef, that did the suspecting and police work. and that Lulu incident just cracks me up at how they suspected it was her lol. (funfact it wasn't Soren or Birdy that did this suspect job!) honestly, just give them a traveling job instead of police work.
this kept coming out, "chatty" Dany.... where......
and also, there's so much of descriptions that are.... not needed, at. all. and inner monologues?
Cutting it short because I’m bored. So far, everything feels a bit too messy 🤷♀️
The premise isn’t bad: Dany’s family seems to be a mafia like crime organisation, and he hides (?) from them on the very island one of his uncles has committed a crime on. No idea why, I think he wants to make amends? 🤷♀️
There’s a fire, and ofc the new cop in town who’s investigating is Dany’s ex, Soren. They apparently were together for a short time years ago, but Dany disappeared (for Soren’s good ofc) and left Soren heartbroken.
So yes, the premise is good, but I just can’t make myself care. There are too many side characters with side plots, a few interspersed time jumps and no hint as to why Dany thought it a good idea to move to the island and work as a chef for one of his uncle’s victims.
On top of that, the narration makes it hard to follow the characters, as the voices seem to be a bit random (for example, the former victim I mentioned before did like an insecure, soft spoken girl 🤷♀️)
At least I didn’t waste an audio credit on it, seeing as it was part of a free holiday audio bundle on BookFunnel.
I'm a fan of romantic suspense and this book kept me interested and involved from beginning to end. An opposites attract, cop and guy from a crime family second chance romance, there's plenty of steamy sex to go with the action. It's a spinoff from another series, but I didn't feel lost even though I have not yet read the previous series.
Cheesy & melodramatic. Beware you’re being dumped in to the middle of an ongoing story so it helps if you’ve read the series this is branched off of. I did read it but could barely remember these two or what previously happened (and I was too lazy to go back and look it up) so I was confused for the first portion of the book. Not a good start to this new series
I almost skipped this one cause my main goal is Shay and Ryder's book. Chickend out though cause I was afraid of missing out on something. Even if it's not a favourite I liked it well enough and rating it 2.5 ⭐⭐⭐ rounding up.
I loved the instant heat between Danny and Soren, and their past history. It was fun having the angst of their relationship in the past, so the drama came from the actual story, instead of their relationship.
This was an adventurous and engaging story that I think is probably best when paired with the series it stems from. So many characters and stories were involved, that I think it made it more exciting.
Not quite as good as Mat Dempsey and Niall Hamarsson's books but I still enjoyed listening to this first installment of the West Coat Forensics Series. The investigations/mystery was interesting and the second chance romance felt convincing to me.
I'm looking forward to reading the next book of this series.
An action-packed crime mystery, and the beginning of the West Coast Forensics Series. It’s full of twists and turns along the way.
Soren and Dany have a second chance at love, but it won’t be easy. Soren is a cop and Dany is a member of a crime family he wants nothing to do with. But when crimes and suspicious characters start and these two are thrown together it’s hard to deny their feelings, but they also have to figure out what’s happening if they are going to have the chance to be together.
I enjoyed them trying to fight their feelings while knowing they can’t deny them, and when Soren decides he’s all in…well, sexy AF. And Dany finding peace with being himself…lovely.
Quite uneventful on both the romance and the plot side. It felt more like a novella to finish off the Unshielded Hearts series. I loved both related series so far, but this new spin-off doesn’t start well for me.
It’s definitive. Elle Keaton knows how to write a suspenseful and gripping murder/mystery while entwining a heartfelt romance.
Ms. Keaton returns us to Piedras, the setting for her Veiled Intentions (Hamarsson And Dempsey) series, with Real Trouble, the first in her spinoff West Coast Forensics series. Real Trouble is captivating from its opening, with a mysterious murder, to its heart pounding climax. Amongst the death and destruction is a second chance romance, which blooms from a devastating past. Not to worry, we encounter some familiar Piedras residents but Real Trouble can completely stand on its own.
Danylo (Dany) Peters/Petyr chose Piedras as the place to pull his life together. After the brutality Franjo Petyr wrought upon the island, Dany figures it will be the last place the Petyr crime family will look for him. Unlike the rest of his family, Dany was forced into a life of crime, one that he has to live with and follows him like a plague. With Franjo’s demise at the hands of the Piedras sheriff, Dany hopes to put the past behind him. But will the family let him go?
Soren Jorgensen is the new deputy in town. He, too, is trying to put distance between himself and his tiresome and depressing past and start a new life. Piedras may not be a gay mecca, but it sure has a disproportionate number of gay men. Growing up in a household of stoic Norwegian immigrants, he was good at keeping his emotions locked away. But dammit, the enticing Danylo broke his heart, and the man can cut through his defenses like a knife through butter.
Sheriff Dempsey and Niall Hamarsson (Veiled Intentions series) are away on their Thailand honeymoon for two weeks. So, Deputy Birdy Flynn and Soren are flying solo as murder and a rash of fires breakout. However, when things go tits-up, they enlist the help of Niall’s colleagues at West Coast Forensics. Together Birdy, Soren and West Coast Forensics diligently sift through the clues and evidence, in a race to end the rash of crime, knowing full well they will have to answer to Sherriff Dempsey.
To muddy the waters, is Soren compromised as Dany becomes a suspect? Soren believes in Dany’s innocence, but things smell a lot like the Petyr family is involved. Birdy is on high alert and while she cannot remove Soren from the case, she proceeds cautiously checking in with Soren frequently.
Meanwhile, the past rears its head with old hurts and betrayal, intermixed with soul crushing desire and an undeniable connection that remains between Dany and Soren. They have a history but against the odds they are blazing a new path out of the ashes precipitated by the Petyr family. Both the connection and the sexual chemistry are intense and if they can get out of their own way, they will achieve ultimate happiness and a long future. Just a forewarning, near the end you will need a box of tissues by your side, until you get to the epic epilogue.
Real Trouble is a fast paced and intense ride. The murder/mystery and romance merge seamlessly, creating non-stop action while invoking heartfelt emotions. As with all Elle’s novels you will encounter an abundance of secondary characters who play a major part in helping the story unfold. If you have read Elle’s Accidental Roots series and/or Veiled Intention series, you will recognize many, but as I said before, Real Trouble stands on its own and you will either visit old friends or make new ones, as Dany and Soren reach there happily-ever-after.
Good start to a new series. I loved Soren in Accidental roots series and was looking forward to his and Dany's story. I probably should have done a quick reread of Accidental Roots #8 but would have liked to remember more.
I loved Dany from the start of this one, and really connected with him wanting to start a new life away from the mess that is his family unit. He'd done the work and schooling to start his new life as a chef and it was great seeing him get a chance.
Soren annoyed me at the beginning. His mood swings in relation to Dany were annoying. One second he was accusing him of still being like his family next he was saying that he knew Dany and he wasn't like that. I understood he was hurt by Dany's previous actions but I wanted better from him. Once he got his head out of his butt he settled down and things progressed.
I liked that his behavior was called out by his fellow officer. She also conducted an interview so everything was above board.
The mystery side of the story was ok, but not one that was memorable to me.
I am interested in the side characters and if the series will continue at this location or head back to head offices. I will read the next one and look forward to seeing where the series lead.
***Thank you GRR for the ARC Provided. This is my voluntary and honest Review***
3.5 stars rounded up to 4 because I liked the characters
Dany and Soren have a complicated history. Semi bad guy Dany is hiding on Piedros island, trying to let go of his past. Soren is a bitter man, new to Piedros, trying to let go of his past too.
My major complaint is that while they were good characters by themselves when they get together (for mostly hate sex it seems at times) I just didn’t learn enough about them.
Several little mysteries meandered around the story. A lot happens on this little island paradise. Not sure I’d want to live there.
The author has populated Piedros with hot hunky men to provide fodder for future stories which is ok because I did like this new direction with the West Coast Forensics.
I was eagerly waiting for Soren's story ever since this gentle-giant moved to Piedras islands. We first met Soren and Dany in When It Rains (Accidental Roots Book #8). While Real Trouble can be read as a standalone, there are few references from the Accidental Roots series novels and also a special cameo by a certain FBI agent, so to fully experience Soren and Dany's story, I'd recommend you read the Accidental Roots Book #8.
Real Trouble follows Dany Petyr and Soren Jorgenson as the two try to settle in a new life on a new island, unaware of the other's presence. Dany is in hiding and is trying to make a new life with a new name and on a new island, a place where none of his family members will look for him, or so he believes.
Soren Jorgenson left Skagit to find a new beginning after the only man he'd loved ran. Soren's not the same man he was when he worked in Skagit PD. He is hurting, he is angry, and he's bitter. A chance encounter sets Soren in the one man's path he never expected.
A series of incidents looking eerily familiar with the other incidents involving the Petyr family begins to occur on Piedras and Dany is, unknowingly, in the middle of it all. Soren, being a new deputy, is facing his biggest challenge: to prove either Dany is the culprit or he's innocent. Dany and Soren's chemistry is off the charts *swoon*. Even after years apart, the two are drawn to each other like a moth to a flame.
Elle Keaton has exceptional writing skills and has very beautifully woven story with enough romance, suspense, and drama. The beginning was intriguing and it kept me guessing what was happening (which is a good thing). The suspense built up from the very first chapter and kept me on the edge of my seat until the last.
While this is the first book in the West Coast Foresnsics, the characters will be familiar to those who have read the Accidental Roots series and the Veiled Intention series. The plot was pretty intriguing and kept the romance and suspense on an equal pedestal. The sexual chemistry between Soren and Dany was, as I said, Off. The. Charts! I loved meeting new characters and revisiting the old ones. Cody, Kim, Birdy, Shay, Devon, Dr. Soper, and many others kept the series on a familiar territory which was a plus point in my opinion.
While both, Danylo and Soren, have a history, every encounter with them feels new and familiar at the same time. Both men have been burned and have been yearning for each other and to see them fighting for their HEA was...emotional. The last few chapters of Real Trouble got me in trouble with my emotions (be prepared to cry, people!) BUT it was so worth it for the epilogue.
Real Trouble is not a slow-burn romance. The book has everything you can expect from an Elle Keaton book. It has drama, suspense, romance, murder, arson, and a very happy, HEA.
If you like strong cops with a sense of justice, broken soul with a sense of righteousness, lots of sexy times, murder mystery, and a likeness towards old ladies with a snarky attitude, then you'll love Real Trouble book 1 in the West Coast Forensics.
5/5 would recommend you read Soren and Dany's fight to their HEA. Trust me, you won't regret picking up this book.
I received an ARC from Gay Romance Reviews for my honest review. This review is my opinion of the book and isn't meant to offend anyone.
"I don't even like romantic suspense," I said. "It's the only romance sub-genre I dislike." And then I read books like Real Trouble and dangit, I guess I do like suspense romances.
I fell immediately in love with Dany. He says he's not a nice guy, but he really is - he's just got a super awful family. And when he thinks being with him is too dangerous for his lover Soren (after Soren gets shot by Danny's cousin), he runs. So of course Soren is pissed to get out of the hospital after having been SHOT to find his boyfriend disappeared on him. These events all happen before the book starts, and I was a little frustrated feeling like I'd missed something. I'm not sure if they show up as side characters in the Veiled Intentions series or something to set that up, or if it's just background that never showed up in the books.
Continuing to make me rethink my reading preferences, this second chance romance (not usually my preferred trope) is SO GOOD and SO ANGSTY. They both liked/loved each other, but split because Dany was trying to save Soren from himself (himself being Dany here), and Soren is rightfully pissed about that. There's so much hurting over past mistakes, wariness to trust again despite yearning with everything in them to be with the other, and trying so hard not to repeat past mistakes - I just couldn't get enough. Also, the sex scenes are explosively hot. *fans self*
This is the first book in the West Coast Forensics series, and while it can be read as a stand alone, there seem to be a LOT of mentions of characters and events that happened in what I assume is the companion series, Veiled Intentions. Elle Keaton also has a novella called Get Real (which can be found on the Free Books section of her website) that is about Kim and Win that takes place before the events of Real Trouble. I haven't read the Veiled Intentions series or Get Real (yet), but I almost want to stop and go back and read those before I pick up book two in this series (Real Danger). According to Elle Keaton's website, there's another series that comes before the Veiled Intentions series, the Shielded Hearts series. I don't know if this is also required reading before the Veiled Intentions series. So while it seems like there's a LOT of background characters and stories and whatnot from previous series, there is enough context in this book that you can get everything you need about the main romance plotline between Soren and Dany without having read any others. (I just want to go back and read them because they mention something in an offhand manner and I'm like "WAIT, WHAT? I need to read THAT book, gimme.")
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are unbiased and my own.
I found Real Trouble to be a bit of a rare joy as it effortlessly checked many important boxes of an enjoyable read for me: a writing style I found economical, yet affecting; a plot with a compressed timeline whose pacing never stumbles; and a story that capably conveys highly-charged, fraught passion well enough to make insta-love passably plausible to a critic of the trope. The book also pulls off that atypical writing feat of writing a standalone story from another series (technically two) that manages to: a) incorporate established backstories and characters without making me feel like I’m missing vital information or being frustrated by info dumps that bog down the pace; and b) actually compel me to read the other series purely for my own enjoyment rather than as necessary research to fill out the characters and/or make their development make sense.
Rating: 4/5 🌟 Spice: 2.5/5 🌶️ Characters: Danylo and Soren
A fun start to a series. I'll definitely be continuing. I'm on a big romantic suspense kick lately and eating up everything I can find. Bonus that this has a hero that doesn't think he's good enough for the other one (because of his family and history) and a cop that has never been able to move on from him. The steam is incredible as well. The story is much more plot and relationship driven but when the steam is there it really hits. I will probably come back and reread this again to see if my rating goes up. I struggled a little with the beginning of it and felt a little lost. I'm not sure if that was me or the fact that this is a spinoff series, and I haven't read the other one. I have a feeling it might have been me; that's the reason for thinking I might reread this. I also have a feeling I'm going to really enjoy this series and usually that means my rating of book one goes up if I go back to it, depending on how much the characters tie in throughout the series. We'll see.
This is the first book in the West Coast Forensics series , I am completely hooked . Meeting Soren Jorgensen and Danilo Peters made my day . Moving to a new town Soren 30 years old and a policeman was getting used to his superiors and the locals . Soren always had thoughts of Danylo Peters , their connection together was flaming hot , to remember their time together was perhaps dangerous but mostly it was a beautiful reminder of lust and perhaps more? Soren new that Danilo was inside his heart . Danylo Peters is a guy who needs to seperate from his family , they may have committed crimes but that doesn’t mean that Danylo has or wants to . As Danylo moves away from his family to a new town he cannot believe that Soren is there as well! Danylo and Soren have a past together a past that if it was able to grow it could have been something. The crime plot was extremely interesting adding such interesting characters. I absolutely loved this book , this series will be wonderful.
God, I really, really disliked Danny and had no patience to his angst :/
The lack of backstory was also a serious issue here as we don't get to see the connection between Soren and Danny growing and that conspired against enjoying their relationship; the insta-lust and unprofessional conduct at that first interview would have been more bearable ~sigh~
This book is obviously heavily set over a different series, referring to past events that weren’t mentioned here. Can it be read as a standalone? I don't think so, even when it is a completely different series; it feels like you are missing half of the story.
And Michael Dean's narration... I don't really liked it.
This is an exciting read with an intriguing mystery, and full of twists and turns. It brings together two men who by all outward appearances, should not belong with each other. Soren and Dany have a past and it re-ignites on Piedras Island. I enjoyed a little push and pull between them, and I really liked how firm Soren was in his decision once he realised he wasn’t letting Dany get away again. A great second chance romance with good character depth, some deliciously angry chemistry, and perfect pacing. The story flows nicely and kept me hooked right until the dramatic ending.
Great start to a new series. I loved Soren and Dany: I am very partial to second-chance stories, and if you mix that in with a pinch of mystery and action, the result is explosive. Loved doesn’t-make-things-by-half Soren, he’s persistent and doesn’t stop at anything to get what he wants. Love Danylo as well: he’s this prickly, closed-off guy with a heart of gold, trying to atone for his family’s sins. The writing is engaging and the plot interesting, and these two aspects kept me hooked from start to end!
