A perfect blend of mystery-thriller and BL romance. Bun and Tan are complex characters that love each other, but also take the time to grow while they are separated. I’m glad Por is finally gone so that these two can spend their lives together. And I’m excited that Bun’s family is so supportive of them. I’m do happy to have finally read this.

Skimmed this. It was choppy and left you to fill gaps. Again the show is better. Skip this and watch it. You'll thank me.

Such a disappointment.

The first volume was soooo good! I literally went to the bookstore the day I finished it to pick up volume 2.

It's just a mess of an ending. The wrap up was just anticlimactic and all over the place. The romance was forced and weird. I'm so sad with how bad this was. The only reason I'm not giving it one star is because the art is beautiful.

Well that was wildly underwhelming.

I went back and reread the first volume since it'd been long enough that I hadn't remembered all the details. I'm glad I did that, partly because I really did enjoy the first volume again - perhaps even more - the second time through. And then I sat down with the conclusion, excited to see the rest of the mystery unraveling, only to discover...kind of the stupidest, most anticlimactic solutions to literally everything.

So, in book 1, Bun is a brilliant, closeted coroner who has an unyielding sense of justice and a stubborn reliance on taking care of himself, no matter the circumstance. Despite his intensely independent nature, he starts to get hooked on his interactions with Tan, the obvious suspect in a growing number of crimes, but a man who's beautiful and generous and head over heels for him, even in their short acquaintance.

It's a love at first sight, then bonded through dire circumstances, kind of situation. And it works. Their chemistry feels realistic, and while they're struggling to truly trust each other, they both very badly want to.

Then Bun finds out that Tan is his missing best friend's half-brother...and that friend is both the co-head of a prominent crime family and the murderer who'd staged Jane's suicide and the one who'd instructed Tan to intimidate him, through any means necessary, into ruling the death as a suicide.

Except Pued is angry and upset when he finds out that Tan killed Bun - at Pued's brother Por's instructions. And there's this hint that chronic cheating womanizer Pued might've been in love with Bun all along...although with him insisting that Tan sexually assault Bun as blackmail to keep him quiet, I don't see how genuine any of that "love" could've been.

Anyway, that's all to say that the first volume ended with a ton of very huge revelations. None of which! Mattered! At all!

Very quickly, we slam through a series of events that include Bun's older brother showing up in town and going to Tan as Bun's apparent friend who might know where he is...which is weird, considering the police would've been considering Tan a suspect in Bun's disappearance, since Bun had been talking about Tan's girlfriend's death being a murder.

But then Tan and Bun find Pued dead, Por freaks out and kidnaps Tan's sick mother as leverage, Tan shoots him in semi self-defense and somehow comes out unscathed, Bun's brother pulls some strings with a police inspector who'd never been mentioned before but who's able to immediately uncover the corrupt officer who'd been working with the crime brothers...and that inspector is also someone who'd never been mentioned before...

Then they track down some mystery woman who'd been messaging Pued the day before his death...and instead of it having any connection to, for instance, the mysterious Nat whose name and number had cropped up several times, it turns out to be Jane's older sister, who'd also had a relationship with Pued and confessed to covering up the fake suicide for him and then poisoning him later on.

Which, 6+ months later, turns into her being the one who'd killed her own sister, for handwavey business-related reasons, which the police figure out when they get access to some security footage you would've thought they wouldn't have waited six months to try to locate?

And! Bun trots off to do some study abroad program in the US, for some reason, even though he already has what sound like some pretty substantial medical degrees...and while he's there he reconnects with his ex-boyfriend, who seems completely astonished by Bun's accusations that he's been trying to ruin his life by telling his girlfriends about him being gay, but then turns out to, in fact, still be obsessed with their breakup from like, decades earlier.

In short, there is nothing unexpected about these mysteries at all, and most of the reveals happen super fast with huge chunks of time in between where nothing really happens.

It's not that I hated it - it's just disappointing because I'd really expected some genuine thoughtful twists and turns to be happening here, and there was absolutely none of that.

The relationship between Bun and Tan is nice - even though we don't actually find out what happens with Tan's trial for killing his oldest half-brother and, y'know, helping to enforce their criminal organization for years. You'd think he'd serve a bit of time or at least be under some sort of probation, but there's no mention of any of that, other than him having to sell off some property so he can start up a new cram school business in Bangkok, where he moves to be with Bun and Bun's family. (After his own mother dies, and before Bun runs off to America for a few months.)

Another weird red herring: that teenager that Bun had bandaged up and formed a bond with, who turned up as a student in the Bangkok medical school where Bun and his brother were teaching, with a mysterious new lover whom he described as rather possessive and threatening. I'd thought maybe that would turn out to be something, too, but nope. Just more random threads floating around.

While Bun and Tan could've used a bit more development in their relationship, I did like that they spent some time apart, while they were sorting out their very messy lives...and then reunited once Bun realized how unreasonable it was to ask Tan to fix the entirety of his life before they could begin dating. It was much too big of an ask, wanting Tan to become this ideal guy all on his own, and Tan was right that it wouldn't have worked. So, instead, they're going to support each other as they try to become their best selves.

The proposal in New York was cute, and I liked that Bun had some solid support from his family, after all those years of feeling isolated. So there was some good stuff mixed in, just presented in a pretty messy format in this volume.

And then?? We get an intimate, romantic scene, with Bun opening the curtains after to see a guy plummeting to his death outside, presumably another murder.

What is this, a tv show?? Why is it closing out on another murder mystery cliffhanger when they didn't even SOLVE the first one properly or within any sort of reasonable timeframe?

A wildly weird note to end this series on. I just wish the second volume had held up to the promise of the first one. (The art seemed like it went down in quality, too...a lot of the panels were weirdly proportioned, with oversized bobbleheads that kept throwing me off.)

Vol 1 of Manner of Death introduced the original murder of a woman who “supposedly” hung herself, but Bunnakit is pressured to rule the death a suicide. This murder brings the pair together.

This story was filled with so many twists and turns it was a little hard to keep up sometimes, but it was well worth the effort. In this volume, we get to meet Bun’s overachieving brother Boon who has come to look for him after Bun goes missing, and who ends up helping the pair solve the murders (as now someone else has been killed as well) and catch the bad guys. While we get a resolution to most of the original mystery, there are a few strings left hanging at the end, and sadly this is the final book. However, we do get a resolution to Tan and Bun’s relationship.

If you enjoy a mystery with plenty of twists and turns, and a little bit of spice, Manner of Death Vol 1 and 2 are for you!

Manner of Death volumes 1 and 2 are a bit different from most of the manga I have read as they are set in Thailand instead of Japan and are actually called manhwa instead of manga, though they read the same. This is actually an adaption by Yukari Umemoto of an original story and Thai TV series by Sammon.

Follow Bum and Tan as they try to uncover a murder case where the spiderweb gets complicated with threats, lies, and deceit!

Gosh, the plot twists! Those revelations! I was so invested in the story, not to mention the romance and the tension between Bun and Tan. The pacing was done pretty well since it was divided into two hefty volumes.

The story wasn’t too predictable (for me, at least), the narrative doesn’t get overshadowed by the romance, and you get closure with everything. Great balance, overall. I wasn’t expecting to find such a lovely romance here. Tan, you sweetie!

If you enjoy shows like Castle and other related police TV shows… this is a story that might catch your attention. As I was reading, I couldn’t help but think that this would’ve also been great as a TV show, and according to the back of the manga… it exists!

Who is this manga for
This two-shot is perfect for fans of a dark romance that’s perfectly balanced with a side of action and plot twists. And sweet romance, of course. It also has a live-action adaptation, so you could watch it and read the manga, as well!

im so confused about the end. did bun witness a murder?

the meeting on the observation deck in new york was way cuter and less chaotic than the way they got engaged in the show. cause that was WILD. (if youve watched the show tan made it seem like they were in danger again and they were running from guys in masks who had guns, but it was really their friends. CRAZY)

i feel like since its a manga, it was kind of hard for me to tell the time line.
but you can kinda see more so in the book how crazy they are about each other. (and lowkey a little crazy) cause the show you cant really see into their thoughts.

but i still feel like i liked the show more hate to say it (except the end was wild)

I was expecting a good wrap up to the story. I felt like some of the plot lines were kind of rushed and settled as a second thought. I did love the character interactions above everything else. I love the story as a whole and I know they shaved it down to fit in 2 manga vols so they definitely cut some crucial stuff. So it’s enjoyable and at times humorous, but lacking in places. I would recommend if you are a fan of the series since we don’t have an official translation of the novel yet to my knowledge.

[rating = D+]

Though the first volume was promising and had a sorta Hannibal meets Bones meets Criminal Minds type of vibe to it. But the plot just got away from the writers (probably because they were rushing to get this out, maybe?) and turned into something rather obvious and dull. Always disappointed when a manga with LGBTQ+ representation falls flat, and it could have been very interesting if guided properly.

While I liked the first volume of this manga, sadly the second volume doesn’t stick the landing. The resolution is convoluted and then the story keeps going past the point where the mystery is solved. Normally I wouldn’t mind that, but something about this felt like filler that I just wasn’t interested in reading. I feel like it could have been polished to fit better with the overall narrative. And the final scene between the two leads, ending with him witnessing a suicide felt contrived and cliche and not in a good way. It’s probably a matter of translation or something just not sticking, but I can’t recommend this volume and it killed the series enough that I want to downgrade my rating of the first one. Just not my thing. I will not be reviewing it on my blog.

I'm really glad I binged Volumes 1 and 2 back to back, because it was great to follow all the little details from one volume to another. There was actually a lot more of the after-crime story than I'd expected, which was great, though it did feel like it went on for a long time. I can't say I really liked either Bun or Tan, though. Both were manipulative and red-flags in different ways, but they suited each other and the story, so that was fine.

Honestly, this series was a letdown. I wasn't expecting much to begin with, since it's only 2 volumes, but I expected the murders not to be obvious, the methods to be unexpected, for the question of murder or suicide to be less in your face, and for the romance to be less fake.

I plan on watching the drama adaptation of this series, and I'm really hoping it's better than the source material. I think it could be adapted well into a drama, but I'm keeping my expectations in the middle ground.

I really enjoyed the first volume and gave it 5 starts, but this volume was a bit disappointing. I felt like the solution came too quickly and too easily, the author could have drawn it out a bit more to make the final conflict more dramatic and impactful. It felt a little bit lazy and rushed. I enjoy the series as a whole, but wish the author had taken more time with the ending.

Again a part of this was rather decent and even interesting and then it just flops and drops the ball like vol. 1. Not to mention parts of the second half of this story seemed to be plot twists out of convenience rather than plot.
And let's not talk about the ignored red flags from vol. 1... and yes I understand this is still ment to be a somewhat dark romance....

Very good. Had some slow spots but it was interesting. I love Bun and Tan's relationship and how it progresses. The mystery is good but it was a little predictable. I'm interested in seeing where this goes next.

I’m surprised that they were able to finish this in two volumes. I was expecting 3 or 4 volumes. I enjoyed it nonetheless. I loved the illustrations and how the truth was brought to light. The ending left it open ended.

Now if I can only find The Red Thread and SOTUS manga.

Unbelievably not as good as the first, which was weird because I was was under the impression that we would get more spice. We did, just not in the way I was expecting. It was still very good, and I hope there is a sequel.

As much as I’m still like eh, I do like where Tan & Bun were at the end of the novel. Wrapping up the murder case still felt rushed & like they just wanted to skip over it but still a fun time

Don't know why people are criticizing the mangas because they cover the entire novel. I read both, and they're the same.

The second one isn’t good as the first. All the story was starting to feel less interesting and I couldn’t focus. I like the main couple, but even their story was boring at some point…

Everything was wrapped up this volume - even the small detail of who was the relationship destroyer....which I had honestly forgotten about from the first volume. Overall, enjoyed it.
