Glitch is the first volume in a story that has finished serialization in Japan at 3 volumes total. I'm bringing up this fact to frame the mixed impressions I've gotten from reading it, because it's one thing if this was going to develop over ten more volumes, and another altogether if this is one third of the whole story.

The art made me do a double-take: it's such a modern digital art style, one I'm more used to seeing in webtoons than published manga. It's delightfully fluent where characters' microexpressions are concerned (especially for comedy), but when it comes to backgrounds and landscape art, it's rough, like concept sketches thrown together as as intermediate stage in a creative process. A very new thing for me to see in printed manga.

The target audience & tone is another question I kept asking myself as I read this. The signs point towards middle school: that's the age of most of the characters, and of the two siblings, it's the younger one that seems more put-together, and the overall feeling I got from encounters with non-human creatures in town was a gentle lessons in tolerance & dialogue. On the other hand, a part of me kept waiting for the story to lean into the horror potential of the premise: a town haunted with paraphernalia that appears to be a mix of supernatual and extraterrestrial, and the way these things manifest are pretty creepy. The glitch-art style massive animals, a shopkeeper with wings for head -- this is some WTNV material right there. But with third of the story done, it hasn't really gone there. It's more of an Enid Blyton gang going about the city interviewing people, to the tune of me having a small meltdown waiting for the horrors to spring on them. Once the other volumes are out, I'll pick them up if only to resolve this dilemma once and for all.

Thank you to #Netgalley and Yen Press for a copy of #GlitchVol1.

Sadly this didn’t quite hit the mark for me. I adored the gorgeous art style and the story and characters seem interesting enough, however it was all far too underdeveloped for me. I wanted more from the story, more from the characters, more depth and substance but sadly didn’t get that. I’m gutted because the idea is fabulous, it’s just the execution that let it down.

I heard about this a while ago, but initially, I wasn't interested. However, at a library recently, I decided to give it a chance.

Glitch is great at establishing a mysterious but comfy atmosphere. As you can see in the cover, the art style is rather minimalist, and I think it's done effectively. It adds to the mood without sacrificing too much detail.

Actually, the story is what lacks detail. There really isn't much that happens, yet at the same time, it feels too fast. Also, the characters don't have much depth to them; there aren't enough moments where any particular character stands out. If the volume included more scenes to highlight the unique qualities of each character, it would solve two problems in one: the characters would be less shallow and the pacing would be less fast.

Nonetheless, I enjoyed the volume. I don't know why I was averse to it in the first place; the premise is creepy and interesting, and the art is nice.

I doubt I'll finish the series, but I'll probably give it another chance. If the second volume impresses me, maybe I'll continue.

Nice, calm, clean story about temporal glitches happening in a suburban neighbourhood. Gets a tiny bit scary at the end, but fine for middle and high school readers.

Definitely a picture heavy book, you gotta look at all the details along with the speech to get the full understanding of the book. Interesting art style and story line.

I mostly have no idea what's going on, which seems to be deliberate. A mother and her two kids move to a new town that has some weird things happening that nobody really talks about, strange "glitches" in the world, visions of half formed animals, strange creatures running around saying "Ah!" and people with wing faces running little corner stores like it's no big thing.

Good stuff.

I received this book from Netgalley/Yen Press in exchange of an honest review.

😍It was quite weird from the start, haha. Minato is at their new class and suddenly an apparition/shadow appears and it is a scary one! From that moment on we get more and more spooky hints and sometimes see things appear in the sky or in the town. There is even someone in town who is from the other side and handles things for the ones that also got to here. I am so curious about the events in the other world and what the shadows/apparitions have to do with it.
😍I loved how Akira (the younger sibling) found a friend group immediately. It always makes me smile seeing new kids connect with others so easily.
😍Oh, Minato! They keep losing their way, getting lost, which just made me laugh because they seem so mature and yet one little distraction and they are lost. Well, I guess even without the distraction they would get lost. It is quite a skill to get that lost in such a little town.
😍Minato being mentioned either by their name or they/them/their. And I am guessing given what mom said in the car: “You don’t have to go to school.” is also about that. I loved that everyone in town did their best to give the right pronouns/call them Minato. I am curious about Minato, but since it is is not relevant to the plot as it is maybe this will be all there is about it.
😍I loved that we got to see a lot of things through Minato, but also through Akira!
😍The art was an interesting/quite pretty style. I loved how the apparitions appeared and how they looked. Plus, the character designs were also good!
😍I loved Minato and Akira form an investigation group with the kids Akira befriended earlier. How they went to see how often things appeared and if it was more than years before. Plus, also try to figure out what is going on. I am not sure if I would have had the courage, especially not seeing that big shadow they encountered. Yes, the shadows don’t seem to do much, but who knows.. Don’t want to get on the wrong side.
😍The new character that was added. Hirata-chan. I was at first worried the story would turn a certain way (more silly) but instead Hirata was a great addition and could bring in some inside info which was handy.
😍The ending took up things a notch and I just love how it went from mysterious to OH FUCKITY. I am very curious about what is next and what is lurking in that place!

All in all, this was a good volume. Mostly mysterious with some spooky apparitions but it definitely set the base for something big and spooky and I need the next volume!

- Thank you to the author and the publisher for providing me a copy through NetGalley. -

I found the concept of this first volume definitely interesting and new.
It's a super duper fast read considering there's very little text. The drawings aren't my favorite style, but the story did get my attention.
I'm not totally sure how to feel about it yet, but considering it's only a first volume, it was ineed a good start to the series.

Thank you to NetGalley, Yen Press, and Shima Shinya for the opportunity to read Glitch in exchange for an honest review.

Harboring a simplistic art style, Glitch follows Minato and Akira, siblings who have moved to a new town. Soon after their move, they both notice strange happenings at school, on the street, and even at home. When Akira sees a strange creature outside her window, her and her friends investigate what this thing may be. After it leaves something behind, they go to a local shop where the owner isn't fully...human. He manages to find the creature who owns the item, and in return for the help, the creature sets up a meeting with the kids. It explains these phenomena as "glitches" but that still doesn't really solve how exactly they are appearing and where they are coming from...

A decent first volume with promise of mysterious deaths and further glitchy beings, this manga series has promise. While it isn't the most engaging, there is some appeal to the mystery behind what the glitches are and how they are appearing. One must continue the series to find out!

From the cover art, this looked like a Love and Rockets entry, (which is why I picked it up,) but it was pretty much the polar opposite of that. This is the first of a series of a sci-fi story about young students in a town that’s being visited by strange shadowy phenomena in the shape of animals. Budding friendships, being the new kid enhance this tame story which will probably appeal to middle grade manga fans.

Paranormal investigations, siblings, amazing cover - Glitch should've been right up my alley. First off, I really like the sketchy art style. It gives the whole manga a very dynamic look and worked well for the most part (except for some really really atrocious hands). The big glitches looked incredibly cool and the shopkeeper's design was just *chef's kiss*. It was a nice approach to have the townsfolk be completely nonchalant about all the paranormal stuff and the literal biblically accurate angel chilling in their town because yeah, this is normal for them, it makes sense. I really like that.

The big downfall of Glitch is 100 % the translation. I think the writing might actually be okay, but the English dialogue sounds incredibly unnatural and stilted. At times, it didn't even feel like human interaction at all. I truly don't know what happened here, but there was a big disconnect between the characters, between facial expressions and dialogue - it was really distracting. The story itself is nothing to write home about - so far, it's your run of the mill "middle/high schoolers investigate the paranormal occurrences in town" plot, but it's fine for what it is. Also, as I said, I love the sketchy art style but some of the hands were just...bad. Not stylized, just plain horrible anatomy.

I feel very "meh" about Glitch. Though the art is often cool, the story's just not very innovative and memorable. I see potential for cool characters (Minato's introduction gave him A LOT of character right off the bat - bad with direction, probably a little scatterbrained but very caring towards their sister - it was really great!), but the stilted translation renders them flat and their interactions weird. If you need a translator, Yen Press, I'm a writer with a BA in Japanese Lingustics and I'm available.

I was provided an ARC of GLITCH in exchange for my honest review.

Overall, GLITCH is a really intriguing read. Two siblings, Minato and Akira move to a new town where strange happenings occur. Creatures glitch in and out of existence, strange lifeforms take up residence in the town, and every now and then pets disappear....

I definitely want to know what happens next. The manga does a great job of setting up the mystery of the town so that you want to know what they are/where they're coming from. This is only the first volume, but we're still getting hints of where the escalation might be going, with the frequency of the "glitches" increasing and the source having been properly identified. At the same time, there is still a sense of unease as we don't really know the how/why.

The art style is also well-done. The artist does a great job of conveying the characters' feelings through their expressions, and the backgrounds are really detailed.

My one potential complaint: the main characters accept the supernatural happenings in town a little too easily. I think most people would kind of question their sanity and ask more questions before accepting the existence of otherworldly beings. I also find it a little hard to believe that no one has investigated these happenings before the kids showed up, especially given that they have been occurring for at least ten years.

That said, I really enjoyed reading GLITCH. I sped through it pretty quickly, and though it requires a certain suspension of disbelief, that's not a dealbreaker for me personally. I would definitely recommend it to others!

First and foremost, I'm absolutely obsessed with Shima Shinya's manga drawing style. It is absolutely incredible, I was mesmerized at every single page and I couldn't get enough. And I will check out her backlist just because I need more of her art - that is how much I loved it.

On the other hand, from a narrative perspective, I found it a bit weaker. It felt as if sometimes there were parts missing from one page to the next or even from one vignette to the next, the transition wasn't as smooth, the dialogues didn't quite feel natural and attuned to what had previously been said. It can definitely be improved and it didn't prevent me from enjoying the manga, but there were a few times where I felt like I was missing pieces or I was feeling a bit disoriented and that annoyed me a bit.
For instance, there's a moment when the characters unanimously start calling a creature "hirata-san" (or something like that) and the name hadn't come up at all previously and I don't know if it means something in Japanese - and in that case, there should have been a translator's note - but it wasn't clear to me at all and I couldn't understand where the heck it came from.

Last, and this is an important thing to note for me, I loved the presence of a nonbinary character - the older sibling - and how their identity was never challenged or questioned or even hinted at as something "not ordinary". They used they/them pronouns, everyone referred to them as they/them and the words used reflected that respect and normalcy. It isn't relevant to the plot at all, which to me made it all the more special.

Thank you Yen Press and NetGalley for providing me with an arc of this manga, in exchange for my honest review.

What a nice and intriguing start to this series.

We follow two sisters, Minato and Akira when they move to their new home. They don’t seem to have a good relationship with their mother but a great one with eachother.

Minato gets lost on her way to her new school and once there she sees this strange big glitching shadow creature in her class, which no one else seems to notice.

When she picks up her little sister Akira after school, they notice a notice board with a lot of flyers of missing cats and they soon learn that while not everyone sees them, a lot of people do see the strange glitchy creatures/shadows and are used to seeing them.

Another strange thing is a person from a shop, who is very nice and helpful but has a face made of wings.

After seeing a strange creature at her window, Akira starts an investigation club with her new friends. Minato joins them in their investigation and they soon realize that the creatures might be coming from a big dark forest. And when they go there, they not only learn a lot but also meet someone unexpected.

This had a scary ending that left me wanting more!

After a few nice colored pages, the images turn black and white, a nice drawing style with great facial expressions!

I flew through this manga, eagerly wanting to learn more and enjoying the spooky vibe as well as the friendship and the investigation.

An intriguing beginning! Minato and Akira Lee have just moved to a new town, and soon discover the strange apparitions that every local just takes as normal. Enormous animals, glitchy shapes, even whole people with odd features, like wings instead of a face.

With the help of two new friends, they form an investigation club. In manga, that would normally be a really wholesome, cute vibe, but the art style and nature of the apparitions really make this book ominous. This first volume isn’t so much horror, but you get the impression that it’s going to turn that way in the future. I don’t anticipate gore, but I think there’s going to be some monsters afoot, soon!

The art style is pretty interesting. If feels a bit like 3D animation which has been rendered down into traditional manga 2d aesthetic. I like it! The backgrounds, especially in interiors, are a bit…airy, sparse, but the characters aren’t in some whitespace land. It’s more minimalist, and very deliberate. Not lazy, just a style.

I’ll be keeping an eye out for volume 2. It’s got me intrigued!

Hmm, I love the cover of this manga, since it looks so different! The whole atmosphere is quite different too and there's some Stranger Things vibes in it. Minato and Akira Lee have moved to a new town and right away weird things start to happen. They see these glitches of sort like animals and little creatures and decide to investigate what is happening and whether the forest in the middle of the town has something to do with it. It's slightly odd how everyone thinks seeing weird things is normal and many have see these too, which makes this interesting and spooky in a totally different way. I like how the glitches are animals and there's this haunting feeling to the manga even though it's not horror.

The art looks wonky, not manga-like at all. It's sharp and toneless, which makes this interesting too. For me the beginning is too abrupt though and we don't really get to know the characters to care enough. This is the downfall. Otherwise the mystery seems intriguing! This is a short series, only four books long and it could work as an anime.

Thank you, Yen Press & NetGalley, for allowing me access to read & review this graphic novel with honest.

Capturing the same allure that many found with Stranger Things, Welcome to Nightvales and X-Files, Glitches Vol. 1 has begun the build-up to a mystery that begs to be answered, in this world.. and the next.

A new town, a new school and a family with hopes of a new beginning. Everything is normal... except the odd acceptance of strange glitching creatures and bookshop owners with biblical wings heads. The acceptance rules that keep them safe and allow their day-to-day life is without malice but could still put the town in danger. Ignorance can only be blind for so long, and the kids who can see the glitches are ready to bring the mystery to light.

This story did a great job with the subtle mystery breadcrumbs and maintaining a safe but eerie atmosphere. The innocence is still there, but I've seen enough to know it might not stay for long.

I loved this!
When I picked up the book I didn't know what to expect, but the story and art totally surprised me.

The story slowly grows with the mystery and events that unfold in the city.

The two sisters are incredible main characters, and I liked them immediately after opening the book. They are aware of their weaknesses, but that just means they do their best to overcome their difficulties and don't allow to be stopped by them. With their willpower they seek answers to the mysteries they have seen, and are joined by two girls from the city, who have the same curiosity about the events they witness.

The graphic style is beautiful. Fantastic and wonderful.
I think it fits perfectly with the theme that the story portrays and its relaxed drawing style with the contrast of black and white adds more to the mystery and deepens the sci-fi.

Super excited to read the next volume.

Thank you NetGalley and Yen Press for the ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review, all opinions in this review are my own.

A very interesting first volume of a manga series, it has an eery, slightly haunting atmosphere without going full horror. This story follows two siblings Minato & Akira who have recently moved to a new town and are starting school, strange phenomena are observed by some people in this town as well as our two main protagonists. These siblings along with Akira's friends start investigating these strange occurrences or glitches. They meet some interesting otherworldly people/creatures while on their search. Not much happens in this book as plot but it sets up an interesting premise for future volumes to follow.

The illustration and cover are what drew me into this book, it use simple shapes of bold black and white panels for it's story and does a very good job at that.

This is great start for this series.

Minato and Akira Lee are brother and sister. They have moved to a new town, with their single parent mother. They are settling into their new school but something is odd about this new town. There are weirdly ghostly appearances, the local shop keeper has wings instead of a face and some strange small creature was caught peeping through Akita’s bedroom window.

Determined to get to the bottom of this mystery Minato and Akira team up with new friends from school to investigate these strange phenomena but as they do so they realise that the presence of these ghosts might not be as benign as first thought, especially when someone goes missing in a nearby forest.

The artwork is great, the story is engaging and now I need to read book two because I want to follow this series to the end.

This is sort of unique for a manga series that although the plot/setting is students investigating some otherworldly phenomena only they and few others can see, the cast is multi-cultural and the art style seems to draw from a variety of global influences. I'm invested! It seems the titular 'Glitch' refers to a sort of barrier between worlds, 'same latitude and longitude but not here,' as explained by one of the characters, and lately, more seems to be coming through...

I appreciated the casual non-binaryness of one of the characters (the author is also nonbinary) and it's nice to have that be more a thing (as in, it just Is with no further explanation needed) lately.

This was interesting, and I'll look forward to further volumes.

I had absolutely no idea what to expect when I became interested in this graphic novel. In fact, I was drawn to it by the cover, which I thought was beautiful, and by the title, which intrigued me. I have no regrets whatsoever, as it was a very enjoyable and gripping read, and I'm really looking forward to reading the sequel to find out what's going on!
Minato and Akira move to a new town with their mother, but soon see strange things along the way. Sort of shadows and visual cracks. Giant shapes with animal outlines. When they realize they're not the only ones seeing them, they investigate to find out where they're coming from. With the help of a few classmates and strange characters, they criss-cross the city in search of answers.
The sequel will tell us more, but for now I've really enjoyed my reading: it's interesting, the drawings are nice!

Really liked this story! It was an interesting concept and I enjoyed the artwork. I don’t know if it’s my copy or if it’ll be that way in the final printing, but after a few panels it became black and white and all the colors disappeared which was disappointing.

The time jumps were confusing and made the story feel disjointed, it could’ve been broken up with some panels to make the transitions more cohesive. I also wish we got to know more about the characters before jumping into the main plot with the glitches.

I’m looking forward to continue the series and find out more about the glitches! Highly recommend for graphic novel/manga lovers especially if you enjoy the sci fi genre!

I didn’t enjoy “Glitch” by Shima Shinya as much as I wanted to. It has everything I want from a manga: An interesting setting, a unique artstyle (it looks almost digital- the art is hard to describe), and diversity in the cast of characters. However, I didn’t find the story engaging, perhaps because it was incredibly slow and relied on the same jokes over and over. The whole idea where the town is ‘glitching’ would be more interesting if it made more sense or had more screen time (page time?). I liked the main characters enough, but they were very forgettable. Finally, the art was unexpressive in the human characters but interesting in the nonhuman characters. Overall, some people may like this book, but I didn’t. 4/10.

Glitch, Volume 1, is a sci-fi graphic novel that follows two siblings, Minato and Akira after they move into a strange new town that's filled with dark creatures and glitches that not everyone can see. Once they realise they've both seen them, they start an investigation with some of their new friends to find out what's really going on,

I really enjoyed this graphic novel and thought it was a great introduction for the story to follow in the next volumes. I will definitely be picking them up.

Thank you to NetGalley and Yen Press for the E-arc!

I was excited for this release as I enjoyed this author's other work "Lost Lad London". This is definitely different than the aforementioned as it is a sci-fi about two siblings investigating strange phenomena in the town they just moved to. A lot of set up was happening in this volume so there wasn't as much action. However, I think I was intrigued enough to continue the series. This author tends to write shorter series so I know things will definitely pick up in later volumes. Highly recommend checking this out if you are curious or already a fan of the author's works.

I can't remember how I stumbled upon this title but thank you to whatever list-maker made it happen. It's a curious read and sometimes I struggle with serialized things because I'm impatient, but this was fun. I do enjoy reading manga every now and again because it makes my brain work differently to read in the opposite direction of what it is normally trained to read in. I like the artwork in this, which is different than most manga. It's crisp and straightforward for the most part. It's also inclusive in ways that I haven't seen in manga before but I haven't read enough manga to understand if that's new or just the genre itself.
